Beyond Contract Law: Expanding Legal Education In Construction Management, Grace M. Hetland
Construction Management
The California Polytechnic State University Construction Management (CM) program is designed to prepare students for the managerial responsibilities of the construction industry. However, construction projects involve a broad range of legal considerations that extend beyond traditional contract administration. While the CM curriculum currently includes a course focused on construction contract law, there is limited exposure to other legal disciplines that frequently affect construction professionals throughout the project lifecycle. This research explores the potential value of expanding construction law education in the CM curriculum by implementing an additional topics course as an elective for students. To determine which legal subjects would …

“Measure ULA,” named after United to House LA, was approved by voters in Los Angeles in 2022 to create a dedicated, long-term funding source for solutions to homelessness in LA, including funding the construction of affordable homes and preventing homelessness by helping tenants stay in their homes. The funding would come from a new tax on the most expensive real estate transactions in L.A. (i.e., mansion tax), and would affect fewer than 4% of all property transactions. At the end of three years of local news coverage about Measure ULA from the Los Angeles Times and LAist, the news audience …

This article examines how medical AI systems are incorporating SDoH data and the governance challenges that follow. The authors show that while SDoH integration can enhance clinical workflows and predictive accuracy — potentially improving outcomes for underserved populations — it also introduces acute risks of proxy discrimination, where facially neutral variables replicate protected characteristics. Surveying U.S., EU, and international frameworks, the authors argue that existing regimes lack clear ex ante guidance to distinguish beneficial from harmful uses of SDoH data. In response, they advance post-market monitoring as a pragmatic and scalable pathway: generating real-world, SDoH-stratified evidence that can support enforcement, …

BACKGROUND: Flow diversion is effective for unruptured distal anterior cerebral artery (DACA) aneurysms, yet comparative data between the Silk Vista Baby (SVB) and Pipeline Embolization Device (PED) in this challenging territory remain scarce.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study using the CRETA Registry, including consecutive patients with unruptured DACA aneurysms treated with SVB or PED. The primary endpoint was complete angiographic occlusion (O'Kelly-Marotta grade D). Secondary outcomes included procedural characteristics, clinical outcome (modified Rankin Scale), and complications. Overlap weighting was applied to account for non-randomized treatment allocation. Predictors of occlusion were explored using penalized logistic regression. A sensitivity analysis …

In this nonpayment proceeding, the court dismissed the petition upon finding the rent demand fatally defective. The rent demand cited a total dollar amount and directed tenant to an attached ledger containing non-rent charges — including a security deposit, move-in fee, monthly electric charges, late fees, and a lockout fee — reflecting a different amount than demanded. The demand impermissibly shifted to tenant the burden of calculating the rent actually owed and failed to enable tenant to formulate a defense. Predicate notices are not amendable.

Modern deep neural networks have shown remarkable performance in medical image classification. However, such networks either emphasize pixel-intensity features instead of fundamental anatomical structures (e.g., those encoded by topological invariants), or they capture only simple topological features via single-parameter persistence. In this paper, we propose a new topology-guided classification framework that extracts multi-scale and multi-filtration persistent topological features and integrates them into vision classification backbones. For an input image, we first compute cubical persistence diagrams (PDs) across multiple image resolutions/scales. We then develop a "vineyard" algorithm that consolidates these PDs into a single, stable diagram capturing signatures at varying granularities, …

An Exploratory Latent Segmentation Approach To Account For Temporally Shifting Parameters In Driver Injury-Severity Models, Tanmoy Bhowmik, Shahrior Pervaz, Fred Mannering, Naveen Eluru
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Temporally shifting parameters in crash severity modeling is a well-documented phenomenon, with growing evidence suggesting that the influence of explanatory variables changes over time due to shifts in driver behavior, vehicle technology, and roadway conditions. Many studies have examined this issue by comparing the temporal stability of adjacent-year data using a variety of modeling frameworks that have often assumed a homogenous effect of explanatory variables across the entire crash population. The current research effort departs from past work in two ways. First, it compares data separated by multiple years (instead of comparing adjacent years), and second, it tests the homogeneous …

Today, when searching for information about the Welsh in early America, two dominant, but false, narratives quickly emerge both online and in books and exhibitions: that the Welsh Prince Madoc discovered America, resulting in a legacy of ‘Welsh Indians’, and that sixteen signers of the Declaration of Independence were Welsh. Using primary and secondary sources, we contextualize both of these myths and discuss their development and impacts upon Welsh-American heritage. Eighteen separate signers of the Declaration (the list of sixteen is never complete, nor identical) have been attributed with Welsh ancestry through social media, popular news sources, popular history books, …
The Effects Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Female College Students' Social Emotional Development: Is Flourishing Possible?, Kaylee Kirkwood
The Effects Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Female College Students' Social Emotional Development: Is Flourishing Possible?, Kaylee Kirkwood
University Honors Theses
Adverse childhood experiences are events of trauma and abuse that occur prior to age eighteen. High rates of sexual violence against girls and female undergraduate students inspired this study to explore how trauma may impact development and overall college experience. This thesis employed a small exploratory pilot study to investigate childhood trauma and social-emotional development among a small sample of female college students (ages 18-25; n = 41). Participants recruited through the Prolific Database completed an online Qualtrics survey consisting of screeners, demographic questions, measures of trauma history and emotional functioning, and optional open-ended experience-based questions. Measures were guided by …
Applications Of Prior And Novel Computational Tools In Mental Health Treatment, And Their Potential To Uncover The Explanatory Gap, Ambika Vyas
University Honors Theses
The explanatory gap is a widely discussed concept in scientific and philosophical literature. In neuroscience, the solution to the explanatory gap is highly sought out, but the general consensus is that it is unsolvable. Numerous articles discuss the explanatory gap alongside computational tools and how these tools could aid neuroscientists in uncovering the mental health explanatory gap. However, significant developments in machine learning have been made since 2020, coinciding with the rise in Large Language Models (LLMs). This thesis is a literature review on computational methods, tools, and devices developed and utilized by researchers to improve how mental health disorders …

Translational equity means ensuring that diagnostics, treatments, care models, and prevention strategies are developed and implemented so they work for populations with the greatest burden and least access to care. In Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), where most evidence derives from highly educated, non-Hispanic White participants at large academic centers, translational equity is critical to prevent misclassification, limited access, and widening disparities and to ensure that underrepresented communities shape how new knowledge moves into practice. Hispanic and other populations in the United States are disproportionately affected by ADRD yet remain underrepresented in research, with gaps especially pronounced in high-poverty …

To address a gap in research on manifestations of combined and multifaceted world grief experiences, qualitative research was conducted in the form of semi-structured interviews with 6 different college students. Common themes arose from the interviewees' grief experiences including hopelessness, overwhelm, anger, and changed future planning. Additionally, participants shared their experience finding community, engaging in creative pursuits, and taking action against oppressive systems in order to experience hope and purpose individually and …
Facilitators And Barriers That Exist For Patients Receiving Dental Care In Rural Communities, Monse Sandoval Brumbaugh
Facilitators And Barriers That Exist For Patients Receiving Dental Care In Rural Communities, Monse Sandoval Brumbaugh
University Honors Theses
Rising healthcare costs and limited access to care have exacerbated the shortage of healthcare providers. Although multiple factors contribute to a clinician’s preference for practicing in rural areas, the imbalance created leads to rural communities with significantly reduced access to essential services, particularly dental care. The disparity between urban and rural healthcare is a well-documented global problem, but it remains a pressing issue in the United States, particularly in Oregon. The Full Time Equivalents (FTE) count of full-time practicing dentists in rural regions is significantly lower than in urban areas. Statewide, there are about 0.48 dentists per 1,000 residents. However, …
School Counseling With Indigenous Students In Rural America: The Role Of A Counselor In Supporting An Indigenous Pedagogy Based Curriculum, Donovan Greene
School Counseling With Indigenous Students In Rural America: The Role Of A Counselor In Supporting An Indigenous Pedagogy Based Curriculum, Donovan Greene
University Honors Theses
Indigenous students are a huge population that are not fully supported by the school psychology field. This is primarily due to cognitive imperialism and the focus on a Western monoculture in education. This has led school psychologists and counselors feeling underprepared and lacking the tools to work with Indigenous students and as a result these students are harmed academically and in terms of their mental wellness. This essay opens with a literature review of scholarship on school counselors working with Indigenous students. To improve relations, I suggest implementing more culturally focused interventions. Unfortunately there is a lack of research on …

"Address It Or Suppress It": What We Can Learn About Rpf From Celebrity Responses, Z Maloney-Dunn
University Honors Theses
In a growing culture of parasociality, ways of engaging with celebrities are constantly changing. RPF (Real Person Fiction) is an often controversial subgenre of fanfiction written about real people. This thesis examines how celebrities respond to RPF written about them, using two case studies: the pairs of Dan Howell and Phil Lester as well as Greg Davies and Alex Horne. Both case studies have reacted positively to RPF, but have very different relationships with their audience and ways of responding to them. Through an analysis of various statements made by the subjects over the years, this thesis seeks to gain …

Foundation For A Digital Beamforming System Using Software Defined Radio, Daniel Cruz Guerrero, Shiron Bendrihem, Benjamin Tucker
Electrical Engineering
This report demonstrates a basis for the foundation of a software-defined radio (SDR)-based digital beam forming system. Specifically, a discussion of time, frequency, and phase synchronization is had in the absence of costly hardware like an OctoClock. Furthermore, this report digs deep into the design process and device characterization of a 4-way Wilkinson Power Divider, which is a necessary hardware component for phase calibration. SDR synchronization and calibration are critical in any digital beamforming system.
Design And Characterization Of A Pulsed Electric Field Chamber For Microalgae Lysis, Connor Strutin
Design And Characterization Of A Pulsed Electric Field Chamber For Microalgae Lysis, Connor Strutin
Electrical Engineering
Microalgae are a promising renewable source of biofuel due to their high lipid content and rapid growth rates; however, algae cells must be electroporated (lysed) to release these lipids. The system developed in this project applies short (40 μs–10 ms), high-intensity (up to 33 kV/cm) pulsed electric fields (PEF) across cell membranes to enable electroporation.
Our lab-scale PEF chamber generates uniform, high-intensity electric fields using parallel-plate electrodes with sub-millimeter spacing. The system is designed to efficiently lyse microalgae cells for lipid extraction and biofuel production.

Maximum Power Point Tracking For Photovoltaic Cells, Rodrigo Menchaca-Ramirez, Jesus Martinez, Steven Rodriguez
Electrical Engineering
Unlike an ideal DC Power Supply, a solar panel does not operate with linear I-V Characteristics. The voltage and current characteristics of a solar panel change based on irradiance, temperature, weather conditions, and load demand. Because of these factors, solar panels do not always operate at their Maximum Power Point, which can lead to significant power losses. Maximum Power Point Tracking is used to adjust the panel operating point so that more usable power can be delivered to the load. This project developed a Maximum Power Point Tracking system using an STM32 Nucleo-L4A6ZG microcontroller and an LT8705A DC-DC converter stage. Justice In Literary Examinations Of African American Incarceration And Death Row, Molly Kate Malone
Justice In Literary Examinations Of African American Incarceration And Death Row, Molly Kate Malone
ETDs from 2020-2029
In the United States justice system, the use of the death penalty has been the subject of major disputes. Some argue that the death penalty is a form of justice, while others believe it is the opposite of what justice should be. Those that disagree with the death penalty are more aligned with the concept of “true justice,” meaning that marginalized groups such as Black and/or poor people should be treated justly despite the systemic racism and classism present in the justice system. Because the death penalty disproportionately affects these marginalized groups, it is impossible for true justice to be …

From Transcriptome To Function: Multimodal Characterization Of Transcriptionally Defined Ventral Tegmental Area Dopamine Neurons, Natalie Dalton Fitzgerald
ETDs from 2020-2029
Substance use disorder is a complex neurobiological disease characterized by impaired control over drug taking and drug seeking. Drugs of abuse exert their reinforcing effects largely through dopaminergic (DAergic) projections from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to the nucleus accumbens, where all drugs of abuse increase DA transmission. Beyond reward processing and reward learning, the VTA contributes to a range of psychiatric conditions, including schizophrenia and attention-related disorders. Although DA signaling has long been a major focus of addiction research, recent transcriptomic studies have revealed substantial heterogeneity of cell types within the VTA. Previous work from our lab identified two …
