Transit Infrastructure And Neighborhood Change: The Impact Of The Q Train Expansion On Commercial Space Use In New York City's Upper East Side, Lily E. Levick

Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses

This paper examines the impact of the 2017 Second Avenue Subway expansion on commercial land uses on New York City’s Upper East Side. The research leverages quantitative models alongside qualitative personal experiences and literature to understand the relationship between infrastructure, space, and neighborhood change from a nuanced perspective. The results show that the studied area experienced a broad trend of de-commercialization between 2003 and 2025, and a simultaneous shift toward commercial zoning in areas closest to new subway stations. These findings encourage us to consider how mobility access is an important driver for change within neighborhoods and urban space, and …

Work-Life Dynamics And Career Success Of Physician-Scientists In Academic Medical Centers, Christine Eriks Jun 2026

Work-Life Dynamics And Career Success Of Physician-Scientists In Academic Medical Centers, Christine Eriks

ETDs from 2020-2029

Physician-scientists sustain careers within one of the most structurally demanding environments in academic medicine, balancing expectations across research, clinical care, teaching, and service during life stages often characterized by intensified personal responsibilities. Although concerns about the stability of the physician-scientist workforce have persisted for decades, less empirical attention has focused on how work-life role conflict shapes career outcomes within this population. This study examines the relationship between work-life role conflict and career success among physician-scientists in academic medical centers. Guided by role theory and boundary theory, this cross-sectional, national study surveyed physician-scientists who served as principal investigators on National Institutes …

Ai Interview Helper: A Tool For Assisting Search And Rescue Long-Profile Interviews, Dylan P. Starink Jun 2026

Ai Interview Helper: A Tool For Assisting Search And Rescue Long-Profile Interviews, Dylan P. Starink

Master's Theses

In Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, time pressure and limited interviewer experience can lead to missed opportunities when interviewing a missing person’s friends and family. This thesis presents a real-time, end-to-end system that provides context-aware follow-up question suggestions as interviews unfold. Leveraging large language models (LLMs) and agentic design patterns, the system is intended to support interviewers by helping them identify relevant follow-up questions and pursue potentially overlooked lines of inquiry.

The system was evaluated through three mock interviews with two SAR interviewer participants across two events. Given the limited sample size, the results provide early insights into the feasibility …

Teaching Multi-Core Architecture: Design And Implementation Of A Cache-Coherent Cpu For Undergraduate Education, Isaac R. Lake

Master's Theses

Modern computing has relied on multicore processors for high performance for nearly two decades, yet undergraduate computer engineering curricula often provide limited exposure to parallel hardware architectures and their design challenges. This thesis presents the design of CPE 433, a course that extends the pipelined and cached OTTER CPU developed in CPE 233 and CPE 333 into a multicore processor capable of running parallel workloads. The thesis documents the architectural changes required to adapt the verified single-core design into a multicore system, including MMIO-based interrupt support, a shared cache hierarchy with cache-coherence mechanisms, and clock-gated modules. It further presents a …

These applications show that MSI is most often used for retrofit, vertical expansion, mixed-use buildings, over-track construction, and buildings with major functional or structural discontinuities. The study then examines the Coupling Coefficients (CCs) Method as a …

A History Of The Underground Comix Scene: The Seriousness Of An Unserious Genre, Harris Darcie Shugart Jun 2026

A History Of The Underground Comix Scene: The Seriousness Of An Unserious Genre, Harris Darcie Shugart

Master's Theses

The Underground Comix Scene of the 1960s and 1970s was born out of an age of censorship. The Comics Code Authority, a regulatory body created by the Comics Magazine Association of America in 1954, established guidelines requiring publishing houses to self-regulate following a recommendation from the United States Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency in 1953. Comix with an X, for their X-rated nature, represent an emerging counter-culture in the latter half of the 1960s and the 1970s, with an epicenter of San Francisco. These comix and their artists were not interested in obtaining the looming ‘Seal of Approval’ from the …

Beyond Numbers: Governance, Capital Structure, And The Contribution Of Village Cooperatives To Regional Economic Output In Indonesia, Mohamad Dian Revindo, M. Fajar Ramadhan, Nia Kurnia Sholihah, Indri Br Situmorang, Hilda Fachrizah

Economics and Finance in Indonesia

Although cooperatives are widely regarded as an important part of Indonesia’s economy and have a  large membership base, the contribution of cooperatives to regional economic output in Indonesia has never been systematically examined. This study provides the first multi-year, fixed-effects panel evidence of cooperative–GRDP linkages for all 34 Indonesian provinces (2017–2023) in a Cobb-Douglas production function framework with province and year fixed effects. Two outcome variables are estimated: Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) and the Unemployment Rate (Unemp). The findings indicate that active cooperatives are associated with higher provincial GRDP and lower open unemployment; despite, the associations should be read …

The Court Of Small Things, The Curse Of Legal Superstition: The Precipitous Decline Of Small Claims Court, Why It Matters, And What Can Be Done About It, Telia Mary U. Williams Jun 2026

The Court Of Small Things, The Curse Of Legal Superstition: The Precipitous Decline Of Small Claims Court, Why It Matters, And What Can Be Done About It, Telia Mary U. Williams

Nevada Law Journal

This Article addresses the precipitous decline of small claims courts in the United States and argues that their erosion is more than administrative; it is a democratic and constitutional crisis. Small claims courts were once the laboratories of everyday justice, where ordinary citizens could access law without lawyers, ritual, or mystery. The seemingly minor disputes of the small claims court illuminate the democratic soul of American law. Yet, over recent decades, filings have declined dramatically, and the locus of power has shifted from the poor to repeat-player institutional actors. This is in part due to what I call, “legal superstition,” …

Clientelism And The Quality Of Democracy: A Comparative Analysis Of Rule Of Law And Public Goods Provision In Indonesia And Malaysia, Ahmad Mikail, Muhammad Arief Virgy, Mustabsyirotul Ummah Mustofa

Jurnal Wacana Politik

Clientelism remains common in Southeast Asian politics even though electoral democracy has expanded. This study examines how different forms of clientelism influence democratic quality, focusing on the rule of law and public goods provision in Indonesia and Malaysia. Building on the theories of clientelism, understood as the exchange of material benefits for political support. Such practices can weaken the fair enforcement of laws and shift public spending toward targeted groups instead of universal welfare programs. This study uses panel data from the Varieties of Democracy Institute and applies a comparative approach to analyze Indonesia and Malaysia. A multiple linear regression …

Rethinking Pakistan Studies: The Grounds Of Regional Knowledge After South Asia, Zoya Sameen Jun 2026

Rethinking Pakistan Studies: The Grounds Of Regional Knowledge After South Asia, Zoya Sameen

FAS Pakistan

This article rethinks Pakistan Studies as both a pedagogical project and a field of knowledge by examining the limits of history as a tool of legitimation. It argues that in the public sphere, history often serves to authorize the present, and shows how Pakistan Studies has historically operated within this framework. At the same time, the article suggests that this condition opens up another possibility: to understand history not as passive inheritance but as an active demand upon the present. Seen in this light, Pakistan Studies emerges not as a stable body of knowledge but as a series of shifting …

The Can Challenge: Understanding The Best Ways To Incentivise Recycling Through A Diffusion Approach, Michael Brock, Lucia M. Murgia, Stefania Sitzia, Jiwei Zheng

All Works

Understanding the best ways to incentivise recycling and improve the efficiency of waste practices is a key environmental, social, and economic management problem that needs addressing. We search for solutions to this issue by testing the effectiveness of two incentive mechanisms (a piece-rate and a lottery-based systems). We run a similar field experiment in three different locations, namely a student, residential and workplace environment, to verify the robustness of our findings and thus increase confidence in the external validity of our intervention. By interpreting recycling activity as marketable service, we employ a diffusion model to analyse the potential adoption of the …

Trust Asymmetry And Cross-Border Merger Withdrawals: A Global Perspective, Muhammad Farooq Ahmad, Saqib Aziz, Rwan El-Khatib, Duc Khuong Nguyen Jun 2026

Trust Asymmetry And Cross-Border Merger Withdrawals: A Global Perspective, Muhammad Farooq Ahmad, Saqib Aziz, Rwan El-Khatib, Duc Khuong Nguyen

All Works

We empirically examine how trust asymmetry between countries can impact the cross-border merger outcome. Differing trust perceptions between acquirer and target countries can increase the complexities of deal negotiations and integration, constraining the successful deal completion and outcome. We find, in a comprehensive global sample of 56 countries spanning 37 years, that higher trust asymmetries between the acquirer and target countries significantly increases the cross-border merger withdrawal intensity and reduces the expected synergy gains. Moreover, the adverse effects of trust asymmetry are significantly attenuated by the quality of institutions in both countries. Our results hold after employing various empirical techniques …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Vicarious Trauma And Emotional And Somatic Resource Replenishment Among K-12 School Principals In Suburban Communities, Rachael A. Garcia Jun 2026

A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Vicarious Trauma And Emotional And Somatic Resource Replenishment Among K-12 School Principals In Suburban Communities, Rachael A. Garcia

Education Doctoral

This qualitative study, grounded in the job demands-resources (JD-R) theory, explores the lived experiences of K-12 principals in suburban communities as they encounter vicarious trauma (VT). The study aims to fill a gap in the research by examining how these leaders deliberately employ strategies to replenish their emotional and somatic resources and develop resilience. The role of school principals has evolved significantly, now requiring them to provide substantial social-emotional support for both students and staff, which exposes them to others' traumatic experiences. This exposure can lead to vicarious trauma, a deep psychological transformation resulting in emotional exhaustion, compassion fatigue, and …

Loint: A Framework For Geospatial Data Quality Management Of Integrated Bim-Gis Models To Support Digital Twin Development In Construction And Renovation Applications, Peshawa Mohammed

Doctoral

The development of high-quality digital twins of built assets is essential for resolving defects and integrating off-site fabricated components in construction and renovation applications. A key component of digital twins is the three-dimensional (3D) digital models. Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Geographic Information Science (GIS) models serve as valuable geospatial sources for these models. The integration of BIM and GIS data enables the creation of comprehensive digital twins within a georeferenced national mapping framework. Since digital twins are developed to reflect the existing conditions of the assets in the real world, geospatial surveying instruments and techniques are typically used to …

Introduction To The Northern Illinois University Law Review 2026 Symposium, Ashley Larsen Jun 2026

Introduction To The Northern Illinois University Law Review 2026 Symposium, Ashley Larsen

Northern Illinois University Law Review

In the fifty years since the advent of Agricultural Law as a field, there has been a cascade of changes and new laws that impact the everyday farmer. In 2025 alone, the National Agricultural Law Center noted ten hot button issues impacting laws and policies surrounding agriculture. Issues mentioned span from changes in pesticide regulations to alleged anticompetitive conduct in the beef sector. Recent discussions in Agricultural Law heavily concern the development of technology, including the ever more complex software in farm equipment,  and the growth of artificial intelligence. As technology continues to advance, these conversations will only grow more …

Aligning Quality Assurance For Agricultural Carbon Credits With Farm Bill Conservation, Andrew Hockenberry, A. Bryan Endres, Jonathan Coppess Jun 2026

Aligning Quality Assurance For Agricultural Carbon Credits With Farm Bill Conservation, Andrew Hockenberry, A. Bryan Endres, Jonathan Coppess

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The growing number of corporate net-zero pledges and promises to reduce emissions, spurred by pressure from consumers, shareholders, and employees, is leading to the emergence of voluntary carbon markets—carbon markets independent of government mandated emission reductions or regulatory structure. Because agricultural soil can provide a carbon sink, depending on management practices and soil type, many agricultural producers and landowners are poised to generate carbon credits and supplement farm income by selling those credits to corporations seeking to offset emissions. However, carbon crediting programs qualify credits through assurances that the credits are additional to a business-as-usual scenario, remain permanent, and avoid …

U.S. Regulation And Litigation Regarding Gmos: A Cautionary Tale Of A Piecemeal Framework, Michael R. Reese, George V. Granade Jun 2026

U.S. Regulation And Litigation Regarding Gmos: A Cautionary Tale Of A Piecemeal Framework, Michael R. Reese, George V. Granade

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Bioengineered crops using genetically modified organisms (GMOs or GM) are big business in the United States. In little more than two decades, GM agriculture constitutes more than 90% of crops such as corn, soy, and canola. The acceptance of GMO foods by consumers, however, has not been as robust—leading to demand for labeling regulations so consumers can identify whether their foods contain GMOs. U.S. law governing GMOs, particularly food labeling, lacks a comprehensive regulatory scheme and is instead highly fragmented. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has debated how to label such foods for over a decade, issuing no rules …

Nothing Runs Like A Deere, Except When Deere Doesn’T Run: Why Illinois Should Enact Right-To-Repair Legislation For Its Farmers, John Aird Jun 2026

Nothing Runs Like A Deere, Except When Deere Doesn’T Run: Why Illinois Should Enact Right-To-Repair Legislation For Its Farmers, John Aird

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Since 1971, John Deere has been using the popular slogan “Nothing Runs Like a Deere,” symbolizing the strength and self-reliance long associated with American farming. Yet as modern agricultural equipment has become more computerized and complex, manufacturers such as John Deere have restricted farmers’ ability to independently repair the equipment they own, through the use of unattainable software, licensing agreements, digital locks, and warranty limitations. The modern right-to-repair movement challenges this shift. At its core, the movement asserts that ownership should include the ability to repair the product that a consumer owns. This article argues that Illinois should enact a …
