Novel Oral Fluid Drug Screening Device Evaluation, Sarah Jenkins
Novel Oral Fluid Drug Screening Device Evaluation, Sarah Jenkins
ETDs from 2020-2029
Oral fluid (OF) has been determined comparable to blood while being a more accurate specimen to reflect recent use than urine. OF roadside testing devices utilize the ease of access and toxicological information provided by OF. These devices are designed to be used as a roadside screening device that can detect the presence of drugs. In 2018, Alabama was the first state in America to implement a comprehensive state OF drug testing program for screening and laboratory testing. At the current moment, there are five approved devices for use in Alabama. Part of the development of the program involved evaluating …

Applying Signal Detection Theory Using Evofinder To A 10-Consecutively Manufactured Barrel Study That Included Damaged Bullets, Ruheen Firoz Charania
ETDs from 2020-2029
The science of firearm and tool mark identification is based on the premise that no two tools produce the same microscopic detail and the tool that made the marks can be distinguished from all others. Based on the AFTE Theory of Identification, firearms comparisons can be classified as Identification, Elimination, Inconclusive, or Unsuitable for examination, with inconclusive indicating insufficient individual characteristics to support identification or exclusion. Error rates in firearm examinations are typically calculated by counting how often examiners make false-positive and false-negative conclusions relative to known ground truth, but inconclusive decisions complicate these calculations because they neither support nor …

Through The Lens Of Expanded Scope Of Practice: Training Requirements For Pharmacist-Prescribed Contraception Across The United States, Taylor Clark, Ioana Sandru, Samantha Kunkel, Sarah Lynch
Through The Lens Of Expanded Scope Of Practice: Training Requirements For Pharmacist-Prescribed Contraception Across The United States, Taylor Clark, Ioana Sandru, Samantha Kunkel, Sarah Lynch
Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship
Thirty-one U.S. states and the District of Columbia currently authorize pharmacists to prescribe hormonal contraception. Expansion of pharmacist scope of practice into areas such as contraceptive prescribing represents an extension beyond traditional baseline licensure authority. As a result, jurisdictions frequently require additional training to address competency, patient safety, and liability considerations. Because regulation of pharmacy practice occurs at the state level, training requirements vary across jurisdictions. State boards of pharmacy websites and publicly available regulatory materials were reviewed to identify training requirements for pharmacists authorized to prescribe hormonal contraception. Relevant statutes, regulations, and prescribing protocols were examined. Identified requirements were …

Tribal Nations As Lords Of The Fee: A Common Law Argument For Tribal Discretion In Spending Federal Forfeiture Funds, Kent A. Anderson
Tribal Nations As Lords Of The Fee: A Common Law Argument For Tribal Discretion In Spending Federal Forfeiture Funds, Kent A. Anderson
American Indian Law Journal
Federal criminal forfeiture is a powerful tool meeting at the nexus of criminal law and property law. Courts justify its use based on its English common law history. After seizing and selling assets, the federal government doles out payments from its Assets Forfeiture Fund to cooperating law enforcement agencies through equitable sharing agreements that bind recipients to use funds for law enforcement purposes. Tribal Nations have compelling legal and policy arguments for their entitlement to greater access to and discretion over forfeiture funds obtained through seizures in Indian country. These legal arguments are grounded in: (1) federal criminal forfeiture’s failure …

New Applications Of Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing Parameters Characterize Age-Related Changes In Exercise Performance During Adolescence, Katerina Kourpas, Takeshi Tsuda
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Age-related changes in exercise performance during adolescence are complex because of progressive physical and functional changes, in which multiple factors are involved.
METHODS: Peak and submaximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) parameters were studied in healthy children and adolescents.
RESULTS: TTotal 303 subjects were divided into six groups by ages and sex: ≤11 years old (yo) (28/22 for males/females), 12–15 yo (61/98), and ≥16 yo (52/42). Rest and peak heart rate (HR) were comparable in all groups. Absolute peak values of oxygen consumption (˙ VO2), work rate (WR), and oxygen pulse (OP) were higher in older age groups in both …

Doing Doctorates Differently: Whose House Is This? Building A Thesis Without Apologising, Claire Walsh
Doing Doctorates Differently: Whose House Is This? Building A Thesis Without Apologising, Claire Walsh
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Presented as part of a panel at Doing Doctorates Differently, this provocation returns to the question of doctoral difference from a changed position. No longer asking whether a strange thesis might be permitted, it asks instead whose philosophical and institutional architectures decide what counts as thinkable, rigorous, excessive or possible.Beginning with Deleuze's invitation to send a problem "through the ceiling," the paper lingers with the ceiling itself: why is it there, who built it and what happens when doctoral work begins to reach it? Through metaphors of rooms, houses, landlords, tenants and muddy boots, the talk considers how researchers inherit …

Interview With Vernon Weckbacher, Vernon Weckbacher, Logan Dovalina
Rio Grande Valley Oral Histories
In this oral history interview conducted on June 2, 2026, Logan Dovalina interviews Vernon Weckbacher (born 1956 in Wadsworth, Ohio), a longtime Rio Grande Valley resident and former museum professional. Weckbacher recounts his family’s relocation to Mercedes, Texas, in 1970 at age 14, his high school and college years at Pan American University (BFA in Art, minor in Geology), and his 26-year career at the McAllen International Museum (now IMAS), where he worked on exhibits and notably helped build the Mexican folk art collection through acquisitions in Oaxaca and Michoacán.
He later served as collections manager at the Mission Historical …

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
Language barriers remain a significant obstacle to natural human communication, limiting access to healthcare, business, travel, and daily social interaction for billions of people worldwide. Existing translation solutions such as smartphone applications and earpiece devices address the functional problem of converting words between languages but fail to preserve the speaker’s voice identity, require hands-on interaction, or depend on proprietary device ecosystems. These limitations disrupt the natural flow of conversation and reduce the human quality of cross-lingual communication.
Mimica is a real-time wearable translation necklace designed to address these shortcomings. Built around an ESP32-S3 microcontroller with an integrated microphone and speaker, …

Harnessing Story To Overcome The Double Empathy Problem Between Autistic And Neurotypical People: Brain-Behavior Relationships, Kate Gifford
Harnessing Story To Overcome The Double Empathy Problem Between Autistic And Neurotypical People: Brain-Behavior Relationships, Kate Gifford
Theses and Dissertations
There is a dearth of information on the physical aspects of the Double Empathy Problem which is the bidirectional challenge of shared empathy and understanding between autistic and neurotypical individuals. Storytelling has been shown as means to facilitate empathy between storytellers and listeners in both neurotypical and autistic populations through behavioral research. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a neuroimaging technique used to evaluate the hemodynamic response in the cortex and can be used to compare hemodynamic responses across multiple individuals (i.e., hyperscanning). The purpose of this study was to examine activation in empathy-related brain regions and assess brain synchrony between …
