Book Review: Atlas Of Minerals And Igneous And Metamorphic Rocks In Thin-Section (2025) By Alessandro Da Mommio And Victoria Pease., Kenneth L. Brown

Geology and Environmental Geoscience Faculty Publications

"Optical mineralogy and petrography not only equip us with the skills necessary to address society’s growing need for rock and mineral resources but also awaken a deeper curiosity—inviting us into moments of discovery that change the way we understand these resources. From observing the vibrant and mesmerizing interference colors of a dunite thin section to examining the uniaxial interference figure of calcite, many of us can still recall the first time we peered through the oculars of a polarizing microscope. Atlas of Minerals and Igneous and Metamorphic Rocks in Thin-Section is an exceptional reference textbook, which nurtures that curiosity and …

A Systems Analysis Of Autonomous Uav Swarm Spraying For Precision Agriculture, Ryker Davis Jul 2026

A Systems Analysis Of Autonomous Uav Swarm Spraying For Precision Agriculture, Ryker Davis

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in civilian sectors, particularly for precision agriculture and targeted aerial spraying, has rapidly evolved from passive monitoring to advanced, autonomous, multi-agent coordination. While deploying UAV swarms offers a promising solution to the payload and battery endurance limitations of single drone operations, realizing field-scale coverage introduces significant logistical and safety challenges. To evaluate the trajectory and viability of swarms, this study synthesizes bibliometric trends, operational simulation, and safety reporting analysis. First, because physical testing of complex swarms poses financial and safety risks, we developed an agent-based and discrete event simulation to evaluate autonomous spraying …

Women & Mental Health: What Utahns Need To Know, Brie Sparks, Susan R. Madsen Jul 2026

Women & Mental Health: What Utahns Need To Know, Brie Sparks, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Mental health shapes how individuals think, feel, cope with stress, and engage in relationships and communities. Mental health concerns have increased nationally and in Utah, influenced by social isolation, economic stress, and lasting effects of the COVID‑19 pandemic. Utah now has one of the highest rates of mental illness in the country, with nearly 29.9% of adults reporting a condition, and women are disproportionately affected. Understanding these patterns and their drivers is essential to improving outcomes for women, families, and communities across the state.

Monitoring And Short-Term Forecasting Of Atmospheric Air Pollutants Using Deep Neural Networks, Prasanjit Dey Jul 2026

Monitoring And Short-Term Forecasting Of Atmospheric Air Pollutants Using Deep Neural Networks, Prasanjit Dey

Dissertations

Accurate forecasting of near-surface atmospheric air pollutants such as PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO, and O3 remains a critical scientific and societal challenge. This difficulty arises from several factors, including nonlinear pollutant dynamics, sparse ground monitoring net works, heterogeneous satellite observations, and strong cross-pollutant interdependencies. Substantial advances have been achieved in temporal deep learning, probabilistic modeling, satellite-based estimation, physics-informed methods, and foundation models. However, these paradigms have largely evolved in isolation. As a result, existing systems are often station-dependent or pollutant-specific and optimized for a single forecasting task. This limits their robustness and generalizability across regions and heterogeneous data regimes.

Evaluation Of Thresholds For Adult Tarnished Plant Bug, Lygus Lineolaris (Beauvois), In Thryvon® Cotton, William Anderson Fletcher

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tarnished plant bug (TPB) is the most economically damaging insect pest of Mid-South cotton. TPB reduces yield is reduced by damaging squares, terminal growth, and small bolls, resulting in reduced yield. Currently, cotton grown in the Mid-South averages 1-6 insecticide applications per year for control of TPB. The introduction of ThryvOn® cotton technology provides a new management strategy for TPB control. ThryvOn® technology produces the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) protein Mpp51Aa2, which has insecticidal activity on TPB. A field study was conducted at five locations in 2024 and seven locations in 2025 across the Mid-South to evaluate different threshold levels for …

Review And Experimental Demonstration Of The Concrete Maturity Method For Early Opening Of Arkansas Pavements, Chase Dykema Jul 2026

Review And Experimental Demonstration Of The Concrete Maturity Method For Early Opening Of Arkansas Pavements, Chase Dykema

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many Department of Transportation (DOT) specifications across the United States require a minimum time to gain strength for concrete pavements before they can be opened to construction equipment or traffic. This period is anywhere from three to seven days. However, concrete pavements can often be opened earlier as long as a minimum required strength is attained. With the development of modern pavement mixes, this strength can often be achieved well before the required curing period has passed. Allowing contractors to open pavements earlier increases construction efficiency. One nondestructive method of proving a pavement has achieved the required strength is the …

Neuromuscular Junction Dysfunction In A Subset Of Charcot-Marie Tooth And Related Peripheral Neuropathies Mouse Models, Jonathan R. Funke, Celeste Martinez, Samia L. Pratt, Alaura D. Rice, Abigail L.D. Tadenev, Robert W. Burgess

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Charcot-Marie Tooth (CMT) disease is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous inherited peripheral neuropathy for which there is no treatment. CMT patients often present with weakness, fatigue, and muscle atrophy in the distal limbs. Improving function at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) may improve function in some CMT patients. Using mouse models, we investigated eight CMT subtypes for NMJ phenotypes by morphology and functional deficits assessed by electromyography (EMG). We did not find NMJ abnormalities in mice with mutations in Gjb1Y/Δ2 (CMT1X), or Yars1E196K/E196K (diCMTC). Mice with mutations in Ighmbp2Y918S/Y918S (CMT2S) and Pla2g6M1J/M1J (Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy) have neuromuscular …

Muscle–Tumor Crosstalk In Exercise Oncology: Exercise-Induced Myokines And Cancer Cachexia, Amirhossein Ahmadi Hekmatikar, Francesco Bettariga, Álvaro López Llorente, Diego Fernández-Lázaro, Katsuhiko Suzuki, D. Maryama Awang Daud

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Exercise-induced myokines, such as IL-6, irisin, and myostatin, play crucial roles in mediating systemic adaptations and modulating tumor progression. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on how regular moderate-intensity exercise affects the myokine network within the tumor microenvironment (TME) of solid tumors. Results from the 86 included studies indicate that structured training (aerobic: 45–65% VO2 max; resistance: 45–70% 1RM) enhances the expression of beneficial myokines that support immune surveillance, reduce inflammation, and improve muscle–tumor cross-talk. IL-6 demonstrates a dual modulatory effect on inflammation and immunity; irisin contributes to tumor apoptosis, while myostatin downregulation supports muscle integrity and metabolic balance. Evidence suggests …
