Who’S More Likely To Do Science Philanthropy? Research On The Factors Influencing Chinese Private Entrepreneurs’ Willingness To Do Science Philanthropy, Tsz Ho Tony Lau

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

China’s investment in scientific research funds feature relatively small amount and unitary structure of source. In recent years, the Chinese government has constantly issued policies to encourage social capital to participate in scientific research, especially fundamental research, by charitable donations or the like, but no significant results have been achieved. China's private entrepreneurs are the main force behind charitable giving. Therefore, it is imperative to engage these private entrepreneurs.

This thesis works on the characteristics of private entrepreneurs who are more likely to donate to scientific research. It can be divided into two parts/studies of research: 1) the impact of …

Leveraging Observational And Rct Data For Understanding Interventions’ Efficacy: Applications In Progressive And Acute Neurological Diseases, Yaobin Ling

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The advancement of drug repurposing for progressive and acute neurological diseases is hampered by the limitations of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and observational data. This dissertation presents a comprehensive framework to integrate data-driven insights from multiple sources, including observational studies, RCTs, and synthetic data generation, to overcome these challenges.

The first study focuses on estimating treatment effects on the population level, which investigates the effects of routine and high-dose influenza vaccines on the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) through a trial emulation framework applied to health claims data, addressing biases inherent in observational studies. The second study …

Antiquated Practices In Mississippi That Are Impeding The Right To Vote, Amanda Noel Apr 2025

Antiquated Practices In Mississippi That Are Impeding The Right To Vote, Amanda Noel

SLU Law Journal Online

Mississippi is historically one of the most difficult states to cast a vote, especially for marginalized groups. Despite voting becoming more accessible throughout the United States, recently, Mississippi courts and legislature have sought to reverse years of progress by denying those convicted of felonies the right to vote upon reform and by making it a crime to assist others in casting absentee and mail-in ballots. In this paper, Amanda Noel discusses the implications of Mississippi’s attempts at disenfranchisement and proposes feasible solutions to aid those in accessing their fundamental right to vote.

The Impacts Of Coach-Athlete Relationships On Men’S Basketball Student-Athlete Mental Health Outcomes, Luke D. Martens

Leadership Education Capstones

The relationship between student-athletes and their coaches is dynamic and extends beyond sports performance. This connection holds significant implications for the mental health and overall well-being of student-athletes, shaping their experiences both on and off the court (Short, 2005). Coaches often serve as mentors, role models, and sources of support, influencing various aspects of athletes’ lives beyond their athletic endeavors (Burns, 2019). Understanding the intricacies of this relationship is crucial in addressing the mental health challenges that student-athletes may encounter throughout their academic and athletic journey.

2025 April - Tennessee Monthly Climate Report, Tennessee Climate Office, East Tennessee State University

Tennessee Climate Office Monthly Reports

Hi All,

April was a very active weather month across Tennessee! Consequently, this is one of our longer monthly reports. The main weather and climate stories for April 2025 were the deadly severe weather, extreme rainfall and associated flooding, and record-setting heat that all occurred in the first week of the month. A series of weather systems set up across the central U.S. in the first week of April, with warm, moist air funneled into Tennessee from the Gulf. This pattern produced severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and high temperatures from April 2nd to 6th. The series of storms began on …

Together We Can! High School Algebra Plc Members’ Experiences On Implementing New Curriculum And Its Impact On Their Self-Efficacy, Chasity L. Hughes

Dissertations

When state or federal legislation adopts new standards, the workload falls on the teachers. Unfortunately, research has shown a decline in teachers’ preparedness due to the many changes in the standards for mathematics in Georgia in the last twenty years. Studies show that teachers have felt overwhelmed and stressed when implementing previous curriculum changes which have decreased the teachers’ self-efficacy levels. This calls for professional learning communities (PLCs) to provide improvement and sustainment in teachers’ self-efficacy in implementing the new curriculum. Little research has been done to describe the teachers’ experience with the recent change in Georgia's mathematics curriculum. There …

Pedagogical Virtues From The Situationist Insight: Virtuous Scaffolding And Sensitivity To Non-Epistemic Situational Factors To Learning, Noel L. Clemente Apr 2025

Pedagogical Virtues From The Situationist Insight: Virtuous Scaffolding And Sensitivity To Non-Epistemic Situational Factors To Learning, Noel L. Clemente

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

This article explores two pedagogical virtues (intellectual virtues of a teacher) that arise from the insight that non-epistemic situational factors can affect students' epistemic judgements and behaviour. First, a virtuous teacher must be sensitive enough to these factors in order to take advantage of how they boost student learning. However, while cultivating a situationally and epistemically favourable environment for learning sounds sensible, teachers should not spoil their students by making them too dependent on these beneficial external factors. The virtuous teacher must also realize that these are only scaffolds; they do help students initially, but must eventually be removed to …

Mapping Organizational Theory With Scripts, Jose Eos R. Trinidad Apr 2025

Mapping Organizational Theory With Scripts, Jose Eos R. Trinidad

Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications

Organizational theory has developed in numerous directions that have been difficult to integrate. This review synthesizes them into seven perspectives, with theories focused within and beyond the organization (i.e., intra- and extra-organizational dynamics). It proposes the acronym SCRIPTS: structure, culture, relations, institutions, professions, transformation, and social conflict. Within organizations, structure focuses on theories of bureaucracy, management, routines, and decision-making while culture focuses on shared values, identity, climate, and sensemaking. Relations involve studies of interpersonal and interorganizational networks. Institutions focus on the macro-dynamics of fields and isomorphism, and micro-dynamics of entrepreneurship and inhabited institutions. Professions refer to psychological factors shaping individual …

Analyzing The Effectiveness Of Information Security Compliance On Cloud Based Small And Medium Enterprises (Smes), Kasie Kelvin Awagu Apr 2025

Analyzing The Effectiveness Of Information Security Compliance On Cloud Based Small And Medium Enterprises (Smes), Kasie Kelvin Awagu

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

As cloud computing becomes integral to business operations, security compliance is crucial for the success and sustainability of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs). While cloud adoption offers cost efficiency, scalability, and operational flexibility, it also introduces regulatory and security challenges. Unlike large enterprises with dedicated compliance teams and substantial budgets, SMEs often lack the financial resources and expertise to implement security frameworks effectively. Compliance with industry standards such as ISO 27001, SOC 2, NIST 800-171, and PCI DSS is particularly difficult, yet non-compliance can result in severe financial penalties, reputational damage, operational disruptions, and heightened cyber risks. Despite growing regulatory …

How Technology Can Be Used To Reduce The Equity Gap In Healthcare For Underserved Communities, Richard Manprisio Apr 2025

How Technology Can Be Used To Reduce The Equity Gap In Healthcare For Underserved Communities, Richard Manprisio

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

There is an ever-increasing gap in the equality in healthcare received by people. Specifically, those that fall into what is considered the underserved population. Historically, underserved communities have not received the same level of healthcare as those in more affluent areas. While the geographic location is one factor that contributes to this inequity, it is by no means the only one. These multifactorial disparities extend beyond location to encompass systemic issues such as attitudes, knowledge, and possible lack of trust.

Technological advancements have been used to great success in the healthcare field. Devices such as the Internet of Medical Things …

The Impact Of Proptech And The Datafication Of Real Estate On The Human Right To Housing, Michele E. Gilman

All Faculty Scholarship

Proptech is undermining the human right to housing. Proptech is a term of art for the digital transformation of the real estate industry. It includes a range of real estate businesses engaged in development, financing, construction, management, and more. Proptech’s boosters promise frictionless and efficient housing markets. However, Proptech appears to be reinforcing existing power imbalances in real estate markets that are masked by the supposed objectivity and opacity of computer-generated processes. Meanwhile, countries across the globe face a profound housing crisis, with a lack of affordable and safe housing, high rates of homelessness, and rampant housing discrimination and segregation. …

A Peculiar Hobby: A Brief History Of Civil War Reenacting, Donald C. Matthews Apr 2025

A Peculiar Hobby: A Brief History Of Civil War Reenacting, Donald C. Matthews

Tenor of Our Times

This article explores the rise, development, and decline of Civil War reenacting as a uniquely American subculture. Originating in postwar commemorations and evolving into a widespread hobby during the Civil War Centennial, reenacting has served as a lens through which Americans engage with history, heritage, and identity. Drawing on historiography, cultural memory studies, and contemporary critiques, the paper examines how shifting demographics, changing cultural attitudes, and public controversies particularly around Confederate symbolism have shaped the trajectory of the hobby. While participation is declining, reenacting continues to reflect broader societal dynamics regarding how the past is remembered, performed, and contested.
