Across all taxa of life, individuals within a species exhibit variable lifespans. Differences in genotype or environment are not sufficient to explain this variance, as even isogenic Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes reared under uniform conditions show significant variability in lifespan. To investigate this phenomenon, we used lifespan-predictive biomarkers to isolate, at mid-adulthood, prospectively long- and short-lived individuals from an otherwise identical population. We selected two biomarkers which correlated positively with lifespan, lin-4p::GFP and mir-243p::GFP, and two which correlated negatively, mir-240/786p::GFP and autofluorescence. The gene-expression signature of long versus short future lifespan was strikingly similar across all four biomarkers tested. Since these …

The potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), is an important pest of potato crops capable of boring into and consuming the potato tubers. Although chemical insecticides are employed to control P. operculella populations, their efficacy is frequently limited, raising environmental concerns. Host plant volatiles are important allelochemicals that can be exploited for the management of pests. In our previous studies, we identified five volatile organic compounds (3-ethylacetophenone, 4-ethylacetophenone, geranylacetone, ethylbenzene, and 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone) as allelochemicals potentially influencing the oviposition behavior of P. operculella. Using electroantennography (EAG) and behavioral assays, we found that 4-ethylacetophenone significantly repelled P. operculella at all tested concentrations …

Silicon-induced responses play a key role in plant defense against herbivory, though the underlying mechanisms remain underexplored. In this study, we examined how mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) affect tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) defense against an invasive and highly destructive lepidopteran herbivore, the tomato pinworm (TPW), Phthorimaea absoluta. In tomato plants supplemented with MSN, prior exposure to TPW oviposition shifted subsequent egg-laying from a preference for leaves to an even distribution between stems and leaves. This shift was not observed in nonsilicon-supplemented plants. Prolonged oviposition triggered pigmentation in the basal cells of type I glandular trichomes on the stems of silicon-supplemented plants. …

Bed bugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) are blood-feeding insects closely linked with humans and animals, causing discomfort, and posing potential threats as disease vectors. This study focuses on Cimex lectularius (common bed bug) and Cimex hemipterus (tropical bed bug), the two key species identified in Africa. Cimex lectularius infests human habitats, while C. hemipterus, more common in Africa, infests diverse habitats, including bat colonies. In our study, we investigated the infestation dynamics and distribution of bed bugs in Africa, when considering climate, habitat, and host availability using system dynamics and ecological niche modelling techniques. System dynamics modelling analyses in Kenya revealed varied …

The Constantinople Council Of 1872 And The Imposing Of The Bulgarian Schism, Stoycho (Stefan) Staikov
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The Revival of the Bulgarian people is closely connected with the publication of the Decree on February 27, 1870, which became the bearer of the people's desire and hope for the formation of a legal solution to the matter pertaining to the Bulgarian Church. The ecclesiastical rights of the Bulgarians, granted at first, nevertheless became the subject of claim and dispute between the newly established Exarchate and the Patriarch of Constantinople. A dispute in which the consistent policy of the Bulgarians, in defending the acquired rights and freedoms, supported by their notorious perseverance, played an important role in the struggle …

Do You Know Where Your Trademark Is? How The Fourth Circuit’S Interpretation Of The Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act Correctly Protects Trademark Owners Online, Alexa Blandeburgo
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Note argues that the Fourth Circuit correctly held that “registration” encompasses both the initial and subsequent registration of a domain name under the ACPA. The Ninth Circuit’s narrow interpretation oversimplified the complexity of domain name ownership and thereby created a narrow loophole for cybersquatters to evade liability. Part I of this Note provides an overview of cybersquatting and the statutory framework that practitioners used prior to the enactment of the ACPA. Part II of this Note compares the ACPA and the UDRP and why a trademark owner would choose one avenue for relief as opposed to the other. …

The Missing Caselaw Of Reverse-Payment Settlements, Michael A. Carrier, Edward Bank
St. John's Law Review
In 2013, the Supreme Court issued one of the most important antitrust rulings in the past generation. In FTC v. Actavis, the Court held that agreements by which brand drug firms pay generics to delay entering the market could violate antitrust law.
Some have criticized the Court for not providing sufficient guidance on the type of analysis courts should apply to settlements involving “reverse payments” (in which patentees pay infringers to delay entry in contrast to more typical agreements by which alleged infringers pay patentees to enter). For example, in his dissent in Actavis, Chief Justice Roberts wrote: …
