Trade wars may have started. At the time this report was published, the Trump administration had threatened, then paused, a 25 percent tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods. Before the pause, Mexico and Canada were preparing retaliatory tariffs. After the pause, Trump ordered a 25 percent import tax on all steel and aluminum entering the United States to start in March 2025 and announced a plan for tariffs on US trading partners. In this brief, we document the different perspectives and economic consequences of North American trade wars and beyond.

Background: Past failures in translating stroke cerebroprotection provoked calls for a more rigorous methodological approach, leading to the stroke preclinical assessment network SPAN (Stroke Preclinical Assessment Network), where uric acid (UA) treatment exceeded a prespecified efficacy boundary for the primary functional outcome. Still, successful translation to humans requires confirmation of the effect of UA across key biological variables relevant to patients with stroke.
Methods: We measured the effects of intravenous UA treatment (16 mg/kg) versus intravenous saline in groups of animals enrolled in the SPAN network with diverse comorbidities, sex, and age. The masked study drug or placebo was administered …

Safety net hospitals (SNHs) provide care to patients regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay, serving populations at the highest risk for poor stroke outcomes. These include historically marginalized racial and ethnic groups, and individuals disproportionately affected by adverse social drivers of health, including lower socioeconomic status, housing instability, and limited access to preventive care. Improving stroke care at SNHs presents a critical opportunity to strengthen care delivery for individuals with the greatest need. However, such efforts require a clear understanding of the barriers across all levels of the healthcare system. In this Perspective, the authors adopt a …

Illicit drug use in the United States continues to rise, alongside an increasing number of severe infections associated with drug use. Surveillance studies report that 28%–34% of candidemia cases are linked to intravenous drug use, with Candida albicans being the most commonly isolated species, followed by Candida parapsilosis and Candida glabrata. Marijuana use is associated with lung infections caused by Aspergillus and the Mucorales, showing a 3.5-fold increased risk of mold infections and a 2.2-fold increased risk for other fungal infections. Intravenous drug use also presents a recognized risk factor for Aspergillus and Mucorales infections. Additionally, substances like …

Background: Pain management for hospitalized elderly patients with fragility hip fractures (FHF) remains challenging. This study aims to distinguish acute pain trajectories in FHF patients that can inform personalized analgesia management.
Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study of patients aged 65 and older with FHF at a Level I trauma center. The primary outcome was daily average pain assessed for five days post-injury using the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI). We used group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) to distinguish acute pain trajectories. Then, factors and secondary outcomes (opioid use and hospital length of stay [LOS]) associated with more severe pain trajectories …

Introduction:
Trauma and hemorrhagic shock (T/HS) are associated with multiple organ injury. Antithrombin (AT) has anti-inflammatory and organ protective activity through its interaction with endothelial heparan sulfate containing a 3-O-sulfate modification. Our objective was to examine the effects of T/HS on 3-O-sulfated (3-OS) heparan sulfate expression and determine whether AT-heparan sulfate interactions are necessary for its anti-inflammatory properties.
Methods:
Male Sprague Dawley rats underwent laparotomy, gut distension and fixed-pressure hemorrhagic shock (HS) and resuscitation. Liquid chromatography-coupled mass spectrometry analyses were performed to measure pulmonary and plasma heparan sulfate di/tetrasaccharides. Pulmonary mRNA levels were assessed by nCounter …

Time-to-event data often violate the proportional hazards assumption under which the log-rank test is optimal. Such violations are especially common in the sphere of biological and medical data where heterogeneity due to unmeasured covariates or time varying effects are common. A variety of parametric survival models have been proposed in the literature which make more appropriate assumptions on the hazard function, at least for certain applications. One such model is derived from the first hitting time paradigm which assumes that a subject's event time is determined by a latent stochastic process reaching a threshold value. Several random effects specifications of …

Autologous Blood Pleurodesis Through An Indwelling Pleural Catheter For The Management Of Prolonged Air Leak In A Malignant Hydropneumothorax, Vanessa Wong, Sathya Balaguruswamy, Bapti Roy
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The British Thoracic Society guidelines recommend a surgical opinion in cases of prolonged air leak or failure of lung re-expansion after 3–5 days. The management of prolonged air leak in non-surgical candidates often proves to be more challenging, with no expert consensus guidelines on treatment options. There is a paucity of data for the treatment of patients with a prolonged air leak in the setting of a hydropneumothorax, who are not suitable surgical candidates. We present the case of a novel treatment approach for an 89-year-old male with a symptomatic, large malignant pleural effusion treated initially with a routine chest …

Dietary nitrate is a precursor to nitric oxide, for which plausible mechanisms exist for both beneficial and detrimental influences in first clinical diagnosis of central nervous system demyelination (FCD), a common precursor to the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Whether dietary nitrate has any role in FCD onset is unclear. We tested associations between nitrate intake from food sources (plant, vegetable, animal, processed meat, and unprocessed meat) and likelihood of FCD. We used data from the Ausimmune Study (264 cases, 474 controls) and logistic regression with full propensity score matching. In females, higher nitrate intake from plant-based foods (odds ratio …

Universities are increasingly recognising the importance of addressing the social and emotional wellbeing of their students. Mental health challenges experienced while at university can hinder academic achievement and exacerbate existing mental ill-health. In response to this identified need, many institutions have implemented mental health services, such as psychological and counselling support. However, barriers such as stigma, accessibility, and effectiveness often limit their reach and impact. Many students do not avail themselves to services, or access the supports available, due to these barriers. This study gathered initial data from 110 participants who visited Edith Cowan University’s “The Living Room” (TLR) within …

This study focuses on enhancing solar energy capture efficiency by introducing innovative hybrid nanofluids for use in solar thermal collectors, whose performance largely depends on the absorption properties of the working fluid. The newly developed hybrid nanofluids, MXene/NH2-UiO66 (Zr) (noted as MX/UO66) and MXene/MIL-88B (Fe) (noted as MX/ML88), were synthesized using an in-situ solvothermal method, combining annealed Ti3C2Tx MXenes with water-stable metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). These nanofluids achieved high efficiency at low concentrations, providing both economic and performance benefits. Comprehensive testing compared the photothermal properties of these hybrids with single-component UO66 and ML88 nanofluids. The MX structures significantly expanded the absorption …

Deceased donor kidney allocation relies on HLA compatibility at the antigen level, as optimal matching reduces the risk of acute rejection. Whether HLA allele-level mismatches improve, the prediction of acute rejection after transplantation remains unclear. Using data from the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA) from 2017 to 2020, HLA antigenic and allelic mismatches between recipients and deceased donors were calculated with imputation of two-field allelic equivalents undertaken where required. The discordance between antigen and allele mismatches was calculated, and oblique random survival forest models were used to predict acute rejection. Predictive performance of antigen (HLA-A, -B, …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: An array of treatment-related toxicities result from androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa), compromising function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Exercise has been demonstrated to counter a number of these adverse effects including decreased HRQoL; however, when exercise should be initiated is less clear. This study aims to examine whether commencing exercise when ADT is initiated rather than later during treatment is more effective in countering adverse effects on HRQoL. METHODS: Men with PCa (48-84 yr) initiating ADT were randomised to immediate exercise (IMEX; n = 54) or delayed exercise (DEL; n …
