Prosecuting Police, Guyora Binder, Anthony O'Rourke, Rick Su Apr 2025

Prosecuting Police, Guyora Binder, Anthony O'Rourke, Rick Su

Journal Articles

Prosecutors face criticism for prosecuting too many minority members and too few police. Recently, some reformers have won prosecutorial elections by pledging to change these priorities. Yet scholars have identified two impediments to police prosecutions. First, county prosecutors often answer to suburban voters indifferent to the excesses of city police. Second, prosecutors depend on those police to investigate their cases and to endorse them as effective. This Article argues that the influence of residents and police on prosecutorial decisions depends on the political geography of a prosecutor’s office. As a result, whether a prosecutor’s office is “city-based,” “regional,” or “state-appointed” …

Human Rights And Foreign Policy: South Africa's Genocide Complaint Against Israel At The International Court Of Justice, Penelope Andrews

Articles & Chapters

On December 21st, 2023 the South African Government filed an urgent application to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the wake of Israel's military activities in Gaza in response to the attack in Israel on October 7th in which more than 1,200 Israeli citizens were killed and several hundred were taken as hostages. The Israeli government responded to the attacks and the taking of hostages by launching a military campaign into Gaza, with the express purpose of destroying Hamas and especially its ability to attack Israel in the way that it did on October 7th. The Acth Test Fails To Diagnose Adrenal Insufficiency And Augments Cytokine Production In Sepsis, Dan Hao, Qian Wang, Misa Ito, Jianyao Xue, Ling Guo, Bin Huang, Chieko Mineo, Philip W. Shaul, Xiang An Li

Physiology Faculty Publications

The adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) test diagnoses relative adrenal insufficiency (RAI) or critical illness–related corticosteroid insufficiency (CIRCI). Initially, guidelines recommended corticosteroid/glucocorticoid (GC) therapy for septic patients with RAI, but later trials did not show a survival benefit, leading to updated guidelines that abandon targeting RAI or CIRCI. Recent studies with an RAI mouse model showed a clear survival benefit from GC therapy in mice with RAI, suggesting that inconclusive GC clinical trials might be due to issues with the ACTH test rather than targeting RAI. To investigate, we performed the ACTH test in septic mice. Interestingly, the ACTH test identified most …

Transforming Optical Vernier Effect Into Coherent Microwave Interference Towards Highly Sensitive Optical Fiber Sensing, Ruimin Jie, Jie Huang, Chen Zhu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The optical Vernier effect has garnered significant research attention and found widespread applications in enhancing the measurement sensitivity of optical fiber interferometric sensors. Typically, Vernier sensor interrogation involves measuring its optical spectrum across a wide wavelength range using a high-precision spectrometer. This process is further complicated by the intricate signal processing required for accurately extracting the Vernier envelope, which can inadvertently introduce errors that compromise sensing performance. In this work, we introduce a novel approach to interrogating Vernier sensors based on a coherent microwave interference-assisted measurement technique. Instead of measuring the optical spectrum, we acquire the frequency response of the …

Llm-Ie: A Python Package For Biomedical Generative Information Extraction With Large Language Models, Enshuo Hsu, Kirk Roberts

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Objectives: Despite the recent adoption of large language models (LLMs) for biomedical information extraction (IE), challenges in prompt engineering and algorithms persist, with no dedicated software available. To address this, we developed LLM-IE: a Python package for building complete IE pipelines.

Materials and methods: The LLM-IE supports named entity recognition, entity attribute extraction, and relation extraction tasks. We benchmarked it on the i2b2 clinical datasets.

Results: The sentence-based prompting algorithm resulted in the best 8-shot performance of over 70% strict F1 for entity extraction and about 60% F1 for entity attribute extraction.

Discussion: We developed a Python package, LLM-IE, …

Traditional Gender Roles And Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring Relationships Between Religion, Self-Control, And Alcohol, Carina J. Pawlak Apr 2025

Traditional Gender Roles And Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring Relationships Between Religion, Self-Control, And Alcohol, Carina J. Pawlak

Posters - 2025

IPV is the physical, psychological, or sexual aggression by a married, unmarried, or live-in partner (Patra et al., 2018).

- Male perpetrators are reported for 92% of the IPV cases compared to females and are more likely to severely injure or kill their partners (Levitt et al., 2008).

- In a traditional community that had lax attitudes toward IPV, there was an 80% increase in the likelihood of perpetration and women’s consent to the violence increased their likelihood of victimization by 11% (Linos et al., 2013).

- To maintain traditional gender roles found within religious communities, some men may use …

Aha And Hmm: The Joy Of Writing Senryu, John J. Han Apr 2025

Aha And Hmm: The Joy Of Writing Senryu, John J. Han

KAUPA Letters

Senryu, a satiric and often humorous counterpart to haiku, emerged in mid-18th century Japan as a form of popular self-expression among the rising merchant class. Named after the poet and editor Karai Senryu, this genre focuses on human nature, social behavior, and everyday life rather than the seasonal themes central to haiku. Traditionally composed in a 5-7-5 syllabic structure, modern English-language senryu are often written in free style with fewer than 17 syllables. While frequently humorous, senryu can also capture serious aspects of human experience, including hardship and social issues. Unlike haiku, which encourages contemplation, senryu aims to evoke immediate …

Historical Imperative: A Key To Korean Unification, Paul Hong Apr 2025

Historical Imperative: A Key To Korean Unification, Paul Hong

KAUPA Letters

This essay explores the theory of historical imperative as a foundational framework for understanding Korean unification. It argues that Korea's unique and continuous national identity, resilience against external invasions, and modern aspirations for unity make unification an inevitable outcome of historical forces. The discussion highlights Korea's 5,000-year historical narrative, incorporating both documented dynastic transitions and the foundational Dangun legend (2333 BCE). While the Dangun legend is regarded as mythology by many historians, it remains a vital cultural and national symbol, reflecting Korea’s deeply ingrained sense of identity and continuity. The essay examines the survival of Korea’s identity through foreign invasions …

Jenifer Michaels. A History., Farrah Freibert Apr 2025

Jenifer Michaels. A History., Farrah Freibert

Publications

Jenifer Michaels was a legendary subcultural star within the gay liberation film milieu of 1970s Los Angeles. Taking three paths to approaching and interpreting Michaels’s filmic and archival image, this article is structured by an analysis of Michaels’s documentary appearances, her performance in sex films, and her statements published in a textual interview. Working against what I call historiographic gentrification, the article utilizes archival and micro-historical methods to think through Michaels’s subcultural stardom as a nexus for complicating biography, documentary, and the politics of veracity.

Exploring And Implementing A Compassionate Social Service Ministry In Korean American Churches, Caleb Kim Apr 2025

Exploring And Implementing A Compassionate Social Service Ministry In Korean American Churches, Caleb Kim

KAUPA Letters

The purpose of this study is to explore the types and contents of church ministries provided by Korean American churches in the Chicagoland area. Using a conceptual content analysis, this study identified that most Korean American churches disproportionately offer an evangelical ministry to their fellow church members but overlook a compassionate social service ministry to their congregations, other ethnic minorities, the oppressed and unjust social issues. The most offered evangelical ministries are weekly worship services, evangelism, world mission, discipleship training, and Bible study. Only few churches provide financial aid support and pastoral care services to their church members and non-Korean …
