An American Song Cycle: A Performance Guide To The Rim Of Love By Andrea Clearfield, Margot Marie Porter

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Philadelphia-based American female composer Andrea Clearfield (b. 1960) arranged the cantata The Rim of Love into a song cycle for soprano and piano, featuring poetry written by Manfred Fischbeck (1940–2021). Fischbeck and Clearfield met in 1985 while both on faculty at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where they cultivated a lifelong creative partnership and friendship, along with being romantic partners for 20 years.

Clearfield has composed over 170 works, including opera, chamber ensembles, solo instruments, chorus, and orchestra. In 2005, the nonprofit mentoring program Astral Artists, based out of Philadelphia, commissioned Clearfield to compose The Rim of Love …

Holding Ground In The Cerulean Tide: Minority Party Legislators' Strategies For Advancing Climate Policies In Landslide States, Sukjae Lee Apr 2025

Holding Ground In The Cerulean Tide: Minority Party Legislators' Strategies For Advancing Climate Policies In Landslide States, Sukjae Lee

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This dissertation addresses a key puzzle: Why do states sometimes adopt nationally polarized policies, such as climate change legislation, even when doing so does not align with strict partisan interests? The analysis focuses on “landslide states,” where a single party overwhelmingly dominates, and the minority party cannot realistically expect to gain a majority. In these environments, reduced partisan conflict allows minority party legislators to break from traditional partisan paths. As a result, I argue that electoral motivations drive them to signal moderation by advancing liberal policy agendas or incorporating provisions that minimize backlash from their core constituents in landslide states. …

How Do School-Level Dynamics Impact Mainstreaming Practices In American Schools?, Natalie M. Watson Apr 2025

How Do School-Level Dynamics Impact Mainstreaming Practices In American Schools?, Natalie M. Watson

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

How do school-level dynamics impact the everyday experiences of students with disabilities, compared to their abled peers? Extant research has mostly focused on the experiences of individual students with disabilities, and their teachers. We know far less about how school-level dynamics shape students’ experiences. Historically, American schools formally separated students with and without disabilities, though the specific mode varied over time -- ranging from explicit institutionalization to segregation in special education programs. At least since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, efforts to educate students with disabilities alongside their abled peers in mainstreamed settings have increased …

Giving Voice To Student Grief: Using Community-Based Participatory Research To Develop And Pilot A Translational Storytelling Intervention For Bereaved College Students, Cassidy Rae Taladay-Carter Apr 2025

Giving Voice To Student Grief: Using Community-Based Participatory Research To Develop And Pilot A Translational Storytelling Intervention For Bereaved College Students, Cassidy Rae Taladay-Carter

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this dissertation was to employ community-based participatory research (CBPR, Wallerstein et al., 2018) methods to attend to a pressing issue in the community. In partnership with one local grief center, we identified the need for enhanced grief support for current emerging adult undergraduate students in our area. Nearly 50% of U.S. emerging adults enrolled in four-year residential universities experience the death of an important figure (Cox et al., 2015; Cupit et al., 2021), at a time when they are developing important facets of their narrative identity. Without the coherence and meaning structures provided by narrative identity, students …

The Impact Of Provider Communication On Treatment Adherence In Patients With Hypertension And Diabetes, Trey Carlson Apr 2025

The Impact Of Provider Communication On Treatment Adherence In Patients With Hypertension And Diabetes, Trey Carlson

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Current research cites effective provider communication as an important factor in improving treatment adherence and the health outcomes of patients. This study examines the effect of provider communication on treatment adherence in patients with chronic illnesses with a specific focus on hypertension and diabetes. Provider communication was measured using patient satisfaction surveys and treatment compliance was measured as the percentage of hypertensive and diabetic patients with a blood pressure below 140/90 mmHg and hemoglobin A1C levels below 9%. A one-way MANOVA revealed that provider communication had no significant impact on the combined treatment compliance variables for hypertension and diabetes (Wilk’s …

Dental Disparities: An Analysis Of Dental Caries Risk Factors Promoting Disparities Between Rural And Urban Communities In Nebraska, Nick Lounsbery Apr 2025

Dental Disparities: An Analysis Of Dental Caries Risk Factors Promoting Disparities Between Rural And Urban Communities In Nebraska, Nick Lounsbery

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The prevalence of dental caries in the United States remains a public health concern, as it is one of the most common chronic conditions across people of all ages. Research shows that preventative measures including brushing, fluoridated water, and regular checkups are effective strategies to mitigate tooth decay. However, there appears to be a divide between rural and urban populations, as the presence of dental cavities is significantly greater in remote areas in the State of Nebraska. Research methods used in this analysis included analyzing accredited academic literature to illustrate how cavities form from a biochemical perspective. Research methods also …

Making The Invisible Visible: Intersectional Perspectives Of Artist Identity And Multiple Sclerosis In The Us Healthcare System, Anna Liza De Leon Evangelista, Chloé Welmond, Emily Rose, Jennifer Gutierrez, Kelly Sheridan, Madeleine Brown, Marissa Barajas, Rowena Luminarias, Nancy Choe Apr 2025

Making The Invisible Visible: Intersectional Perspectives Of Artist Identity And Multiple Sclerosis In The Us Healthcare System, Anna Liza De Leon Evangelista, Chloé Welmond, Emily Rose, Jennifer Gutierrez, Kelly Sheridan, Madeleine Brown, Marissa Barajas, Rowena Luminarias, Nancy Choe

LMU Theses and Dissertations

The intersection of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), systemic healthcare disparities, and art-making remains underexplored within the arts and health literature. While research often highlights the therapeutic benefits of creative expression, it rarely examines how art-making empowers individuals with MS. This study addresses this gap by exploring: (1) how MS influences participants’ art practice, (2) how art impacts the participants’ experiences of MS, and (3) how individuals navigate the United States healthcare system. The research centers on women and gender expansive individuals and takes an intersectional lens to better understand marginalized experiences of those living with MS. These underrepresented groups frequently encounter …

Implementation And Status Of Electronic Health Records In Jordan: A Mixed-Methods Study, Kai Yu Apr 2025

Implementation And Status Of Electronic Health Records In Jordan: A Mixed-Methods Study, Kai Yu

Jordan: Geopolitics, International Relations, and the Future of the Middle East

Background: Jordan’s nationwide Electronic Health Record (EHR) program, “Hakeem,” aims to standardize patient data across the public healthcare sector. Despite substantial progress in adoption, implementation challenges—such as incomplete coverage, usability issues, and privacy concerns—persist, aligning with global EHR experiences. Objective: This mixed-methods study investigates the current status of Hakeem in public hospitals, examines perceived benefits versus ongoing barriers, and explores key drivers that may inform policy strategies for expanded adoption. Methods: A convergent parallel design was employed over one month. Quantitative data were collected via an online survey (N = 68) of Jordanian adults to gauge familiarity with and attitudes …

The Architecture Of National Identity In Jordan: Historical Narratives, State Power, And The Question Of Belonging, Nina Skweres Apr 2025

The Architecture Of National Identity In Jordan: Historical Narratives, State Power, And The Question Of Belonging, Nina Skweres

Jordan: Geopolitics, International Relations, and the Future of the Middle East

This study explores the role of narratives in the construction of Jordanian national identity and examines how Palestinian-Jordanians are included or marginalized within these narratives. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of symbolic power and cultural capital, the paper analyzes interviews with eight individuals ranging from academics to policymakers to civilians alongside literary sources. The findings reveal a state-sponsored identity centered around Hashemite legitimacy and Bedouin heritage, contrasted by more inclusive social attitudes especially among urban and younger populations. Interviewees spoke about a significant divergence between national unity as portrayed by state institutions and the lived experiences of Palestinian-Jordanians, whose identities …

Courting A New International Order: The Evolution Of The International Humanitarian Law Community On Addressing Hybrid Security Threats, Barrett Ahn

Switzerland: International Studies and Multilateral Diplomacy

As state and non-state actors become more interconnected through the advent of sophisticated technology, diverse forms of media, and the development of digital infrastructure, new threats of a hybrid nature are emerging. The international humanitarian law (IHL) community is reassessing how IHL can apply and adapt to the hybridity of non-traditional warfare. This research paper explores the challenges to IHL surging from two branches of hybrid security threats: cognitive/psychological operations and cyber operations. Through interviews with experts in the fields of IHL, international law, cybersecurity, and international relations, along with the analysis of secondary sources and central IHL treaties (the …

From Policy To Perception: How Government Motivations Shape Front-Of-Package Nutrition Labeling And Influence Consumer Understanding In The Usa, Switzerland, And Chile, Amani Malickel Apr 2025

From Policy To Perception: How Government Motivations Shape Front-Of-Package Nutrition Labeling And Influence Consumer Understanding In The Usa, Switzerland, And Chile, Amani Malickel

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

This research examines front-of-package nutrition labeling (FOPNL) systems in three distinct policy environments: the United States (voluntary industry-led), Switzerland (government-endorsed voluntary), and Chile (mandatory warning labels). Through comparative policy analysis and consumer interviews, the study evaluates how different regulatory approaches influence nutritional awareness and purchasing behaviors. Key findings demonstrate that Chile's mandatory warning labels are most effective at reducing consumption of unhealthy foods and improving consumer understanding, particularly among children. In contrast, voluntary systems in the U.S. and Switzerland show limited impact due to inconsistent implementation and industry resistance. The study highlights significant implementation challenges, including First Amendment concerns in …

Comparative Analyses Of Neurorehabilitation Regulations And Health Equity In The U.S., Switzerland, And China: Implications For Universal Health Coverage, Linyue Lu Apr 2025

Comparative Analyses Of Neurorehabilitation Regulations And Health Equity In The U.S., Switzerland, And China: Implications For Universal Health Coverage, Linyue Lu

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

Introduction: As populations age and the burden of neurological conditions rises, equitable access to neurorehabilitation has emerged as a critical yet under-addressed component of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This comparative study examines how healthcare structures in the United States, Switzerland, and China shape neurorehabilitation equity. Methods: This analysis combines semi-structured interviews with seven healthcare experts (neurorehabilitation clinicians, health economists, and scholars) and a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature, policy documents, and demographic data. Results: In the U.S., fragmented insurance models and high out-of-pocket costs disproportionately limit access for low-income and rural populations. Switzerland’s universal coverage masks the inequities driven by …

Security Conditionality: Evidence And Effectiveness, Philip Reynolds Apr 2025

Security Conditionality: Evidence And Effectiveness, Philip Reynolds

Journal of Strategic Security

Conditionality, the practice of attaching conditions to aid, loans, or grant assistance, has become a ubiquitous feature of security assistance. Conditionality is predicted on its deterrent or motivational effects with the ultimate goal being to incentivize and influence the behavior of recipient countries to align with the strategic interests and values of the provider country. While lauded for its potential to promote reforms and good governance, conditionality has also been criticized for its intrusiveness, ineffectiveness, and potential to undermine national sovereignty. This paper argues that security conditionality in the emerging multiplex system will have no influence on recipient behavior. Middle …

Exploring The Matriculation And Resource Utilization Of African American Students With Hidden Disabilities In The Health Sciences, Kimberly Houston Apr 2025

Exploring The Matriculation And Resource Utilization Of African American Students With Hidden Disabilities In The Health Sciences, Kimberly Houston

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Introduction. Learning disabilities result from genetic and neurobiological factors that alter brain function, such that cognitive processes related to learning are affected. Hidden disabilities can be defined as a non-apparent chronic condition that interferes with a person’s activities of daily living. While learning disabilities may be hidden, there are non-learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, autism, depression, fibromyalgia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. While all races/ethnic groups have persons within their population who are disabled, African Americans are at a double disadvantage due to race and disability status. Therefore, the intersectionality of race and disability status among African American students in …

Crusading Against Vice In The Progressive Era: American Anti-Profanity Leagues And Their Legacy, Evan J. Christensen Apr 2025

Crusading Against Vice In The Progressive Era: American Anti-Profanity Leagues And Their Legacy, Evan J. Christensen

Roland D. Sawyer Scholarship Papers

During the Progressive Era in the United States, the rise of Anti-Profanity Leagues—such as those led by Roland D. Sawyer and Arthur S. Colborne—mirrored a growing national moral sentiment against profanity that aligned with broader ideals of social reform and public virtue. These leagues responded to widespread concerns about the perceived erosion of public decency and sought to promote “clean speech” through grassroots organizing, religious engagement, and civic advocacy. This paper situates the Anti-Profanity Leagues within the larger framework of Progressive Era moral reform movements, including temperance, anti-vice campaigns, and social purity efforts. Drawing on period newspapers, archival materials, and …

The Semantics Of Sin: Profanity, Reform, And Cultural Authority In Progressive America, Evan J. Christensen

Roland D. Sawyer Scholarship Papers

During the Progressive Era, language reform movements such as the Anti-Profanity League sought to regulate everyday speech as part of broader efforts to preserve public morality and cultural identity. This paper examines the rhetorical strategies and cultural assumptions underpinning the anti-profanity crusade, focusing especially on Reverend Roland D. Sawyer’s leadership. Using historical sources including league literature, newspaper accounts, personal letters, organizational records, and sermons, it argues that profanity was framed not merely as a religious or moral failure but as a threat to social cohesion, character, and national values. Efforts to suppress swearing reveal how language functioned as a marker …

Crusading Against Vice: American Anti-Profanity Leagues And Their Legacy, Evan J. Christensen

Roland D. Sawyer Scholarship Papers

This presentation examines the rise of American Anti-Profanity Leagues during the Progressive Era, with particular focus on the efforts of Roland Sawyer and Arthur Colborne. These leagues sought to eliminate profanity from public and private life, using printed materials, pledge campaigns, public speeches, and media outreach to promote “clean speech” as a moral imperative. Drawing on archival research, including the Roland D. Sawyer Papers housed at the UNH Library, as well as digital newspaper databases, this project investigates how profanity was framed as a threat to civic virtue, and how anti-profanity activism mirrored the goals and methods of other Progressive-Era …

“The Craze For Legal Proceedings”: Another Look At Schloendorff V. New York Hospital, Paul A. Lombardo Apr 2025

“The Craze For Legal Proceedings”: Another Look At Schloendorff V. New York Hospital, Paul A. Lombardo

Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine

In 1914, Judge Benjamin Cardozo wrote an appellate decision in the case of Schloendorff v. Society of the New York Hospital containing the assertion, “Every human being of adult years and sound mind has a right to determine what shall be done to his own body.” This quotation later became a touchstone for discussions of the principle of informed consent. Previous scholarship has questioned the use of Schloendorff as a byword of patient self-determination, but more recently discovered records suggest yet another way to understand the famous case. Material from the archive of the New York Hospital—where Mary Schloendorff’s surgery …

Art As The Prosecutor's Weapon: The Use Of Rap Lyrics Evidence At Trial, Mikah K. Thompson, Sierra Raheem

Faculty Works

Are rap lyrics worthy of the same protections that other forms of creative expression enjoy, or is there something inherent to rap lyrics that renders them autobiographical, confessional, and reflective of the author’s true intentions and desires? This Article will attempt to answer that question. In doing so, the authors will take the reader on a voyage through a history that is not widely known among the attorneys, judges, expert witnesses, and jurors who are frequently called upon to interpret the art form known as Hip Hop.

This journey requires an exploration of our country’s history of chattel slavery, for …

Us-Mexico-Canada Trade Policy In A Second Trump Administration: Can The Us Maintain Leadership In The World Economy?, Elmore R. Alexander

Bridgewater Review

In April of 2018 in this outlet, I looked at the prospects for NAFTA one year into the first Trump presidency. Trump had campaigned on the premise that NAFTA was the worst trade agreement ever negotiated and vowed to eliminate it. In arguing the merits of a renegotiated NAFTA, I concluded that the net impact of NAFTA had been positive but that the safety net of training and assistance for displaced workers was insufficient to quell populist nationalistic sentiments. In the end, the Trump administration renegotiated NAFTA, creating USMCA (US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement) which is up for renegotiation in 2026.
