Diabetic Retinopathy: Assessing Risk And Preventing Vision Loss, Sandra Piedra

Cohort XIII

Introduction/Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common microvascular complication of diabetes and a leading cause of blindness among working-age adults in the United States. In 2021, an estimated 9.60 million people were living with diabetic retinopathy in the United States and this number is projected to triple by 2050 (Lundeen et al., 2023). Early detection and timely treatment can prevent 95% of diabetes related eye disease, however many patients are unaware that they have this preventable, vision-threatening disease and between 50-60% of patients with diabetes do not adhere to the recommended yearly eye screening exam (National Eye Institute, 2024).

Host P53 Expression During C. Parvum Infection…Does The Virus Play A Role?, Jasdeep Kaur Dhanoa Apr 2025

Host P53 Expression During C. Parvum Infection…Does The Virus Play A Role?, Jasdeep Kaur Dhanoa

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

C. parvum infection induces significant host cellular stress responses, particularly through the modulation of p53 expression underscoring its potential involvement in gastrointestinal malignancies. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for developing targeted therapeutic interventions. This study investigated the effects of C. parvum infection on host p53 dynamics in HCT-8 cells and assessed the impact of antiviral agents Lamivudine and Amantadine on the virus CSpV1 present within the parasite C. parvum. Further, the study focuses on whether the p53 effect changes with the presence or absence of CSpV1. The p53 assay results showed a constant increase in p53 activity after infection of …

China’s investment in scientific research funds feature relatively small amount and unitary structure of source. In recent years, the Chinese government has constantly issued policies to encourage social capital to participate in scientific research, especially fundamental research, by charitable donations or the like, but no significant results have been achieved. Leveraging Observational And Rct Data For Understanding Interventions’ Efficacy: Applications In Progressive And Acute Neurological Diseases, Yaobin Ling

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The advancement of drug repurposing for progressive and acute neurological diseases is hampered by the limitations of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and observational data. This dissertation presents a comprehensive framework to integrate data-driven insights from multiple sources, including observational studies, RCTs, and synthetic data generation, to overcome these challenges.

The first study focuses on estimating treatment effects on the population level, which investigates the effects of routine and high-dose influenza vaccines on the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) through a trial emulation framework applied to health claims data, addressing biases inherent in observational studies. The second study …

Antiquated Practices In Mississippi That Are Impeding The Right To Vote, Amanda Noel Apr 2025

Antiquated Practices In Mississippi That Are Impeding The Right To Vote, Amanda Noel

SLU Law Journal Online

Mississippi is historically one of the most difficult states to cast a vote, especially for marginalized groups. Despite voting becoming more accessible throughout the United States, recently, Mississippi courts and legislature have sought to reverse years of progress by denying those convicted of felonies the right to vote upon reform and by making it a crime to assist others in casting absentee and mail-in ballots. In this paper, Amanda Noel discusses the implications of Mississippi’s attempts at disenfranchisement and proposes feasible solutions to aid those in accessing their fundamental right to vote.

The Impacts Of Coach-Athlete Relationships On Men’S Basketball Student-Athlete Mental Health Outcomes, Luke D. Martens

The relationship between student-athletes and their coaches is dynamic and extends beyond sports performance. This connection holds significant implications for the mental health and overall well-being of student-athletes, shaping their experiences both on and off the court (Short, 2005). Coaches often serve as mentors, role models, and sources of support, influencing various aspects of athletes’ lives beyond their athletic endeavors (Burns, 2019). Understanding the intricacies of this relationship is crucial in addressing the mental health challenges that student-athletes may encounter throughout their academic and athletic journey.

2025 April - Tennessee Monthly Climate Report, Tennessee Climate Office, East Tennessee State University

Tennessee Climate Office Monthly Reports

Hi All,

April was a very active weather month across Tennessee! Consequently, this is one of our longer monthly reports. The main weather and climate stories for April 2025 were the deadly severe weather, extreme rainfall and associated flooding, and record-setting heat that all occurred in the first week of the month. A series of weather systems set up across the central U.S. in the first week of April, with warm, moist air funneled into Tennessee from the Gulf. This pattern produced severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and high temperatures from April 2nd to 6th. The series of storms began on …

Together We Can! High School Algebra Plc Members’ Experiences On Implementing New Curriculum And Its Impact On Their Self-Efficacy, Chasity L. Hughes

Dissertations

When state or federal legislation adopts new standards, the workload falls on the teachers. Unfortunately, research has shown a decline in teachers’ preparedness due to the many changes in the standards for mathematics in Georgia in the last twenty years. Studies show that teachers have felt overwhelmed and stressed when implementing previous curriculum changes which have decreased the teachers’ self-efficacy levels. This calls for professional learning communities (PLCs) to provide improvement and sustainment in teachers’ self-efficacy in implementing the new curriculum. Little research has been done to describe the teachers’ experience with the recent change in Georgia's mathematics curriculum. There …
