How The United States Fails Immigrant Youth, Abigail "Abby" Reinhard Greene
How The United States Fails Immigrant Youth, Abigail "Abby" Reinhard Greene
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
Immigrants are some of the most marginalized members of society. Immigrant youth, in particular, endure additional stresses due to their dual status as children and immigrants. Many fled their home country from persecution or entered the U.S. without a parent or legal guardian.
By May 2024, over 120 million individuals were “forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations.” In 2022, over 152,000 unaccompanied immigrant youths crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. The United States faces several challenges in supporting these immigrant youths, and it currently fails to meet those challenges. ...

Fetal Personhood And The Judicial Erosion Of Women's Rights Following Dobbs, Brendan Williams
Fetal Personhood And The Judicial Erosion Of Women's Rights Following Dobbs, Brendan Williams
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
In Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned its prior precedents recognizing a constitutional right to abortion, a recognition that began nearly a half-century before with its decision in Roe vs. Wade. In its granting certiorari in a case involving a Mississippi law restricting abortion, the New York Times reported that the Court majority took advantage of the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg by allowing “Mississippi to perform a baitand-switch, widening what had been a narrower attempt to restrict abortion while she was alive into a full assault on Roe — the kind …
Secure 2.0'S Automatic Enrollment Provisions And Their Potentially Detrimental Effect On Undocumented Immigrants, Kelly Maurer
Secure 2.0'S Automatic Enrollment Provisions And Their Potentially Detrimental Effect On Undocumented Immigrants, Kelly Maurer
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
The SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 significantly expands retirement plan participation through automatic enrollment mandates, a policy aimed at improving financial security for American workers. However, these provisions may create unintended hardships for undocumented immigrant workers, who constitute between 4.4% to 5.4% of the U.S. labor force. This Note examines how automatic enrollment, default contribution rates, and current distribution requirements may create financial and legal hardships for undocumented workers lacking valid Social Security Numbers (SSNs) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs). The analysis explores the uncertain legal status of undocumented workers under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), as …
Unmasking The Algorithm: Addressing Bias And Accountability In Ai-Driven Employment Practices, Jasmine Wallace
Unmasking The Algorithm: Addressing Bias And Accountability In Ai-Driven Employment Practices, Jasmine Wallace
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
This article argues that as AI systems continue and increasingly influence critical life outcomes, the courts must adapt existing legal frameworks to address disparate impact claims arising from AI-driven processes specifically in employment practices. Doing so will ensure redress for individuals who seek justice against AI-driven processes that cause unintended discrimination without explicit intent and hold organizations accountable to produce transparent and accurate AI-driven employment processes.
This article is divided into three distinct parts. Part I provides concise definitions of commonly used relevant AI terminology and provides an overview of the factual and legal history of disparate impact in employment …
Beyond Human Discretion: Reconciling Ai Systems With Traditional Legal Frameworks, Daniel Ikem
Beyond Human Discretion: Reconciling Ai Systems With Traditional Legal Frameworks, Daniel Ikem
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
In February 2023, attorneys representing a plaintiff in a personal injury case against Avianca Airlines submitted a legal brief containing multiple citations to nonexistent judicial decisions generated by ChatGPT. When questioned by the court, the attorneys admitted they had relied on research generated by artificial intelligence (AI) without verification, resulting in sanctions and reputational damage. Mata v. Avianca both represents professional negligence by legal professionals and a complex intersection of human and artificial intelligence. Unlike traditional research tools that retrieve existing information, generative AI (GAI) creates novel content that appears authoritative, introducing unique verification challenges that traditional ethical frameworks did …
Standard Of Proof In Child Welfare Cases, Guillermo Cintron
Standard Of Proof In Child Welfare Cases, Guillermo Cintron
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
The lack of federal standards at the most crucial decision points of child welfare cases allows agencies across the country charged with ensuring the safety of children to abuse their authority by overregulating and policing Black and Brown families while interfering with their constitutional right to family integrity. Throughout this paper, I will share my experiences working in child welfare. Since 2001, I have worked with children and families in various roles involving the child welfare system. Over the course of my career, I have worked with children in foster care, providing therapeutic services as a case manager working with …

Posters - 2025
- Suggests that communication patterns related to attachment impact relationship satisfaction (Domingue & Mollen, 2009). -Latinx cultural values influence attachment-related conflict behaviors and relationship satisfaction (Guerrido, 2017). -Secure attachment leads to healthier conflict resolution and greater satisfaction (Pistole, 1989). The purpose is to analyze existing research on how attachment styles impact conflict resolution strategies in romantic relationships and determine whether cultural background (Latinx vs. non-Latinx) and relationship length influence these behaviors. Hypotheses H1: The quality of a relationship is mentioned more frequently than other themes when examining previous literature. H2: Cultural influences are discussed more frequently than relationship length in …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
While per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are not actually generated at water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs), utilities are being forced to consider PFAS in biosolids management plans due to mounting political pressure and pending regulations. Emerging thermal technologies including pyrolysis, gasification, and super critical water oxidation have garnered recent attention for PFAS destruction. Drying, however, is a conventional technology that might also be a tool for utilities to manage PFAS in biosolids, but research on the impacts of drying on PFAS in biosolids is scarce. The objective of this research was to determine how drying affected the fate of PFAS …

Understanding The Challenges And Opportunities For Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy In Filipino Physical Therapy Practice: An Exploratory Survey, Oliver Ang, Lily Ann Bautista, Maria Carmela Gerella, Roly Dimol, Arvie Vitente, Ulysses Juntilla, Michael Brian Gasidan
Rehabilitation Sciences Department Faculty Articles
Introduction. Orthopedic manual physical therapy (OMPT) is renowned for its positive biophysical and psychosocial effects, making it an important tool in clinical practice. Although OMPT has long been a stable intervention used in developed countries, its adoption has spiked in developing countries, including the Philippines. Despite this progress, no comprehensive study has explored the factors that may hinder or enable Filipino physical therapists (PTs) from utilizing OMPT into their daily clinical practice. The aim of this study was to conduct a thorough behavioral analysis to determine Filipino PTs' capabilities, opportunities, and motivations for using orthopedic manual therapy in their …

Epigenetics, Preconception Tort Liability, And Public Health, Peter Sie
Epigenetics, Preconception Tort Liability, And Public Health, Peter Sie
UC Law Journal
Epigenetics is an emerging science that studies how our behavior and environment can change the function of our genes without changing our genetic code. These changes can pass on to our children and grandchildren, for better or for worse. Epigenetic knowledge could change our understanding of human biology and individual responsibility. However, it is also ripe for misunderstanding. Commercial entities seek to capitalize on the hype to sell snake oil under the “epigenetic” label. In the popular press, reporters dramatize limited studies to create sensational headlines, often blaming parents for causing epigenetic harms to their children.
If this attitude toward …
America’S Failure To Rescue Parents: A Narrative Of Inequitable Tax “Reform”, Shannon Weeks Mccormack
America’S Failure To Rescue Parents: A Narrative Of Inequitable Tax “Reform”, Shannon Weeks Mccormack
UC Law Journal
Other developed nations provide a slew of direct benefits to parents, such as paid parental leave and affordable childcare. America instead takes a circuitous route, heavily relying on the Internal Revenue Code (the “Code”) to provide tax breaks to certain parents. In addition to being indirect and comparatively stingy, these “parental tax benefits” are not awarded equitably. Instead, they favor nonpoor, one-breadwinner families, ignore the plight of nonpoor, working parents incurring substantial childcare and other work-related costs, exhibit an outright hostility toward poor parents, and raise a host of other distributional concerns. This preferentialism is sticky— when Congress alters parental …
Policy Pathways To Energy Transition: A Comparative Perspective On Portugal And The Netherlands, Anna Atticks
Policy Pathways To Energy Transition: A Comparative Perspective On Portugal And The Netherlands, Anna Atticks
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
This research examines the implementation of European Union (EU) directives—specifically, the Energy Taxation Directive (ETD), the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), and the Renewable Energy Sources Directive (RED)—in Portugal and the Netherlands. While both countries operate under the jurisdiction of the EU, adopting necessary EU climate mandates, Portugal and the Netherlands implement unique national strategies to achieve the relevant targets. Specifically, each country’s strategy is primarily shaped by its geographical location, socioeconomic characteristics, and institutional capacity. Utilizing the Multi-Level Perspective (MLP) framework and two economic theories, including the Pigouvian Taxation Theory and the Porter Hypothesis, this study assesses how fiscal instruments, …
Enhancing Urban Water Drainage In Avenida Da Liberdade: Evaluating Green Spaces And Sustainable Infrastructure In Lisbon’S Master Drainage Plan, Eva Asfahani
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
Lisbon’s Plano Geral de Drenagem de Lisboa (PGDL) represents a major step toward modernizing the city’s drainage system in response to growing environmental pressures. This paper explores how sustainable infrastructure, particularly nature-based solutions such as Green-Blue Infrastructure, are incorporated into the PGDL, with a focus on the Avenida da Liberdade area. Through a combination of literature review, fieldwork, and interviews with municipal officials, the research evaluates the environmental, economic, and social benefits of integrating decentralized, sustainable drainage systems alongside traditional gray infrastructure. Findings show that while the PGDL makes important progress in reducing flood risk and improving water quality, spatial …

Sacred Path, Shared Burden: Pilgrim Perspectives On Sustainability And Impact On The Camino De Santiago, Ella S. Hubbard
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
An unconventional form of tourism, the Camino de Santiago is a religious pilgrimage that takes tourists through diverse terrains across both rural and urban areas of Spain and Portugal, culminating at the Santiago de Compostela Archcathedral Basilica in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. With growing popularity in recent years, pilgrims’ environmental footprint and their impact on local communities have become more noticeable (Whitaker, 2025). The objective of this paper is to investigate the environmental consciousness of contemporary pilgrims and how they perceive their impact on local communities. The research specifically focuses on the perspectives of pilgrims on the Portuguese Coastal Route …
Detecting Greenwashing In The Automotive Sector: Unpacking Greenwashing In Tesla, Volkswagen, And Toyota Through Ai-Assisted Esg Evaluation, Sophie Keyser
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
As environmental concerns increasingly influence consumer behavior and regulatory policy, corporations face growing pressure to demonstrate sustainability. In response, some firms engage in greenwashing—the practice of exaggerating or misrepresenting environmental initiatives to appear more sustainable than they are. The automotive industry, responsible for a significant share of global carbon emissions, is particularly vulnerable to this practice amid its transition to electric vehicles. This study evaluates the credibility of environmental claims made by Tesla, Volkswagen, and Toyota using an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted content analysis of proprietary and non-proprietary data sources. AI was employed to systematically assess and score company performance across …

No Free Labor: Pushing For The Eradication Of Unpaid Internships In Minnesota, Morgan Bruhn, Kaylee Cincoski, Jenna Host, Hollie Mclaughlin
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
The continued lack of paid internships exploits social work students and directly undermines the core values of the profession. To address this injustice, the NASW-MN Chapter’s 2025 legislative priorities call for the creation and funding of paid social work internships, ensuring education is not only affordable and accessible but also ethically grounded and free from exploitation. Equitable compensation is not optional, it is an ethical and economic imperative essential to building a more inclusive and just professional workforce. Minnesota House File 2914 provides a crucial pathway to achieve this goal through a targeted scholarship program.

Home Is Where The Heart Is: Expanding Affordable Housing Access, Amya Enna, Cari Mueske, Charles O'Sullivan, Paul Schreiber
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
This policy brief advocates for bold and transformative approaches to address the ongoing housing crisis in Minnesota. One of the most impactful solutions is the passage of the Minnesota Constitutional Amendment for Housing, which would enshrine the right to housing in our state constitution. This legal shift would serve as a foundation for equitable housing policies and sustainable funding for programs that meet the real needs of Minnesotans.

Tillamook: Ethical Values Or Misleading Marketing?, Victoria Chin, Ealynn Hsu, Kyana Le, B Littman, Natalia Trejo Andalon
B-Corp Case Studies by UNL Raikes Seniors
Tillamook began as a humble cooperative for the local dairy farmers of Tillamook County, Oregon, to ensure that high-quality cheese was the local standard. As time passed, Tillamook evolved to establish an internal Farm Services Team to help support each farmer and pay above market value for members’ milk–in return, receiving a stable supply of dairy to manufacture its dairy-based products. Additionally, the farmers are still the ones who call the important shots for Tillamook rather than other corporate shareholders. Tillamook County Creamery Association (TCCA) has since expanded nationally, but the foundation remains the same: high-quality dairy to create high-quality …

Moralitas, Pancasila, & Political Homophobia: The Resilience Of The Indonesian Lgbtq+ Community, Madeline Morton
Indonesia: Arts, Religion, and Social Change
In this paper, I attempt to understand Indonesian LGBTQ+ identity. With negative views on LGBTQ+ freedoms prevalent amongst the state, religious institutions, and media, I investigate what degree of visibility and expression can be afforded towards community building and individual expression. I catalogue the historical and legal perspectives which influence the current, lived realities of LGBTQ+ individuals. The concept of an ‘appropriate’ expression of gender and sexuality is learned, dynamic, and entrenched in cultural context. In Indonesia’s case, these understandings are forged through dominant systems of knowledge surrounding gender roles, marriage, and familial structure as connected to a nationalist identity. …

Science And Politics In Public Health Regulation, Samuel R. Bagenstos
Science And Politics In Public Health Regulation, Samuel R. Bagenstos
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Much of American public discourse takes for granted a distinction between science and politics. People describe and understand that distinction in contradictory ways, however. And those contradictions themselves underscore how closely entwined science and politics actually are.
