Monitoring Opioid-Use-Disorder Treatment Adherence Using Smartwatch Gesture Recognition, Andrew Smith, Kuba Jerzmanowski, Phyllis Raynor Phd, Aprn, Pmhnp-Bc, Cynthia F. Corbett Phd, Rn, Faan, Homayoun Valafar

Publications

The opioid epidemic in the United States has significantly impacted pregnant women with opioid use disorder (OUD), leading to increased health and social complications. This study explores the feasibility of using machine learning algorithms with consumer-grade smartwatches to identify medication-taking gestures. The research specifically focuses on treatments for OUD, investigating methadone and buprenorphine taking gestures. Participants (n = 16, all female university students) simulated medication-taking gestures in a controlled lab environment over two weeks, with data collected via Ticwatch E and E3 smartwatches running custom ASPIRE software. The study employed a RegNet-style 1D ResNet model to analyze gesture data, achieving …

"Getting Students Involved In School Meals": An Exploration Of Implementation Strategies By School Food Service Staff To Increase Student Participation In School Meals In Southern Illinois., Jennifer Ohene-Afrah

Research Papers

This study examines the impact of the Getting Students Involved in School Meals workshop (November 2023) on student participation in school meals among food service staff in Southern Illinois K–12 schools. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys (n=20) and in-depth interviews. Participants found the workshop valuable and adopted strategies such as social media engagement, direct communication with students, and taste tests. Slight increases in Average Daily Participation (ADP) for breakfast were observed, though results varied by school size. Key barriers included personnel shortages, time constraints, and logistical challenges, especially in rural areas. Findings underscore the importance of …

Unveiling Marginalised Voices: Female Indentured Labourer’S Narratives In Island Literature, Arifah Arum Candra Hayuningsih

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

This study examines the lives of female indentured labourers from Java and India, as portrayed in Liliane Saintomer's La Bayou de Nouméa à Jakarta (2016) and Gaiutra Bahadur's Coolie Woman (2013). Both authors, grandchildren of the central characters, offer personal and historical insights. The research explores how these novels enhance our understanding of the complex identities and lived experiences of female indentured labourers in colonial contexts. It investigates memory as a site of resistance, reclaiming silenced narratives and addressing the shared struggles of Javanese and Indian women in plantation life.

Does Name, Image, And Likeness Increase Gender Inequality In College Athletics?, Aimee Christenson Apr 2025

Does Name, Image, And Likeness Increase Gender Inequality In College Athletics?, Aimee Christenson

Political Science Theses and Capstones

In June of 2021, the National Collegiate Athletic Association adopted its first interim policy regarding Name, Image, and Likeness. From here, college athletes have been able to benefit from opportunities regarding their brand as an athlete. While this development has been historic in its expansion of rights to athletes, it highlights the inequities between male and female athletes. Title IX requires equal opportunity for male and female students. This research raises questions about whether NIL is increasing the disparity between male and female athletes. To answer this question, I looked at NIL data collected by Kyle Ems on the NIL …

Admissions And Outcomes: Evaluating The Predictive Power Of The Lsat And Ugpa, Lindsey Mcmonigal Apr 2025

Admissions And Outcomes: Evaluating The Predictive Power Of The Lsat And Ugpa, Lindsey Mcmonigal

Political Science Theses and Capstones

Law schools have long relied on Law School Admission Test (LSAT) scores and undergraduate GPAs to predict student success, but the effectiveness and fairness of these metrics remain debated. This study examines whether LSAT scores and UGPA accurately predict bar passage and employment outcomes, analyzing data from the American Bar Association’s Required Disclosures for 197 U.S. law schools. Using statistical methods, including correlation and regression analysis, findings reveal that LSAT scores are a stronger predictor of bar passage than UGPA, while financial aid significantly reduces first-year academic attrition. Additionally, law schools with lower acceptance rates tend to produce better employment …

Tradition And Transformation: The Changing Role Of Chestnuts In New England Contra Dance, Emilie Carroll Apr 2025

Tradition And Transformation: The Changing Role Of Chestnuts In New England Contra Dance, Emilie Carroll

Inquiry Journal Spring 2025

It is common knowledge that traditional music and dance are integral to many cultures, but we may not think of the traditions that shape our local community, such as the New England contra dance tradition. Contra dance is a form of folk dance brought by European settlers during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and like all living traditions, contra dance continues to change, yet its historical roots remain significant. In my research project, funded by a Research Experience and Apprenticeship Program grant from the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research, I studied a subset of older tunes called “chestnuts” which are …

The Aspire Study: Assessment Of Shoe Performance In Recreational Exercisers, Amanda Ares, Morgan Koskela, Allison Petry

Inquiry Journal Spring 2025

Carbon-fiber plated (CFP) shoes improve running efficiency, performance, and gait, and minimize fatigue in elite runners. However, the effects of CFP shoes on recreational runners are less clear. It is also unknown whether CFP shoes affect sex differences in pacing. The purpose of this study was to compare running performance and fatigue, gait variables, and sex differences in pacing during a 5 km time trial in recreational runners wearing CFP running shoes and non-CFP running shoes. Twenty-one participants (11 females, 10 males) aged eighteen to thirty-five who trained 15-30 miles per week performed two 5 km time trials on a …

The podcast is designed as an educational resource for undergraduate Criminology and Criminal Justice students, alongside general audience members interested in learning more about criminological theory. Through the lens of true crime, this podcast is an engaging exploration of foundational and advanced theories while avoiding sensationalism and exploitation, a prevalent problem among true crime media. Quantitative Comparisons Of Three Colocated Air Samplers With Simultaneous Pm2.5 [Particulate Matter] Measurements, Emma G. Bollech, Abraham Orozco, Christopher Iceman

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The quality of the air that we breathe has tremendous impacts on our health; bad air quality can lead to short-term eye, nose, and throat irritation, and long-term chronic respiratory conditions. It is important to monitor air quality and understand what metrics indicate potential hazards, in attempts to better measure the healthiness of communities and indirectly its’ individuals. Not all air sensors are calibrated to measure metrics the same, and this study will compare values across air sensors via the PM2.5 air quality standard. In this study we focus on measuring particulate matter – which can come from dust kicked …

Labor And Environment Entwined: A Radical Green New Deal And Just Transition In Appalachia, Anne Marie Lofaso, Nicholas F. Stump

West Virginia Law Review

In this Article, Professor Lofaso and Professor Stump propose a genuinely transformative Green New Deal and Just Transition in Appalachia. The Article opens by tracing the long history of the Appalachian labor and environmental movements. Next, the Article interrogates the common contention that the Appalachian environmental and labor movements are opposed. While this contention has substantial truth, more complex forces have been at work in the region. Fossil fuel industry elites, for instance, have wielded exaggerated “jobs versus environment” rhetoric to maximize profits and quash emergent solidarities among local workers, residents, and activists. This Article contends that a key solution …
