Becky With The Good Hair? The Perpetuation Of Eurocentric Dating Preferences, Black Women & Contemporary Dating Shows, Carolyne C. Tarver

LSU Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

This thesis examines perceptions of the portrayal of Black women in contemporary reality dating/romantic television shows, emphasizing the persistence of Eurocentric beauty standards and harmful stereotypes. In this thesis, I examine these stereotypes: Jezebel, Angry Black Woman, The Strong Black Woman, and The Rejected Black Woman, which I refer to as the "not my type" archetype/image. My research is significant for several reasons, including filling in the gap where previous literature surrounding reality TV, dating shows, and their impact on Black women was scarce. My research incorporates 25 interviews with Black women to examine audience reception towards representation and …

Redefining Actor Training: Prioritizing Mental Health And Ethical Pedagogy In Higher Education Actor Training Programs, Dori R. Leeman Apr 2025

Redefining Actor Training: Prioritizing Mental Health And Ethical Pedagogy In Higher Education Actor Training Programs, Dori R. Leeman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years, higher education personnel across the country have referred to the pervasiveness of mental health challenges on college campuses as an epidemic. Students majoring in theatre and performance are no exception. This dissertation examines the unique factors of actor training programs and their impact on student actors’ mental health and well-being. Many traditional actor training programs have long upheld the notion that great artistry requires personal sacrifices, which include a lack of work-life balance and, at times, practices that blur the boundaries between life and art. I argue that actor training programs have failed to evolve alongside current …

Access And Aid In Higher Education: An Account Of Students' Perceptions Of Louisiana's Tops, Melissa Ann Whitley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Perhaps now more than ever, merit-based financial aid is vital to the economic well-being of states. In Louisiana, many high school students do not have the same access and aid to post-secondary education, therefore permanent and sustainable changes are needed to the Louisiana TOPS program to remove barriers and address student needs. The purpose of this study is to provide an account of the Louisiana TOPS program, explore whether TOPS contributes to the persistent disparities across different socioeconomic groups in college participation and completion, and if the TOPS program alleviates brain drain of the workforce.

This study employed a case …

Predicting The Distribution Of Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems In The Chagos Archipelago, Clara Diaz, Kerry L. Howell, Kyran P. Graves, Adam Bolton, Phil Hosegood, Edward Robinson, Nicola L. Foster

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

To support conservation efforts, accurate mapping of marine organism community’ distribution has become more critical than ever before. While previous mapping endeavours have primarily focused on easily accessible shallow-water habitats, there remains limited knowledge about the ecosystems lying beyond SCUBA diving depths, such as mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs, ~30–150 m). MCEs are important habitats from an ecological and conservation perspective, yet little is known about the environmental factors that shape these ecosystems and their distribution, particularly in the Indian Ocean region. The goals of this study are to (1) predict the spatial distribution and extent of distinct benthic communities and …

Enhancing Eye Anatomy Education: Integrating 3d Models In Open Educational Resources, Hayley Nickels Yancey Apr 2025

Enhancing Eye Anatomy Education: Integrating 3d Models In Open Educational Resources, Hayley Nickels Yancey

Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects

This project explores how interactive 3D models can enhance eye anatomy education within the framework of open educational resources (OER). Recognizing that students in anatomy and physiology courses often struggle to recognize anatomical structures from multiple perspectives—and frequently lack access to high-quality, low-cost study tools—this project addressed these gaps by designing and developing a custom, interactive 3D model of the human eye. Created using Blender and embedded into a web interface via Verge3D, the model allows users to rotate, zoom, highlight, and isolate structures of the eye, including both external and internal components. The tool was designed specifically for students …

Justice, Human Rights, And The New Charisma Of Anti-Democratic Ideologies, Cardozo Law Institute In Holocaust And Human Rights (Clihhr), Floersheimer Center For Constitutional Democracy, Matthias Mahlmann

2025 Event Invitations

Democracies are under pressure worldwide – externally by authoritarian states and internally by political forces that spread anti-democratic ideologies even if masked by avowed concern for the people. While reasons are intensely debated, this talk critically revisits explanations for the charisma of post-democratic ideologies by (1) investigating normative foundations of the exacting and fragile project of democracy and its relation to human rights and (2) discussing human rights theory in times of widespread human rights skepticism and its meaning for crises of democracy. How can we defend the project of democracy in theory and practice?

The Significance Of The Malvinas Issue In The Politics Of President Javier Milei, Reagan Mccain

Honors Theses

This research investigates the Malvinas (Falklands) issue within contemporary Argentinian political discourse, focusing on the rhetoric of Javier Milei, the recently elected president. Known for his populist and provocative style, Milei has surprisingly adopted a more moderate approach to the Malvinas, raising questions about how this aligns with his broader political agenda.

This study analyzes public statements from Milei from the presidential campaign to the present, analyzing them in the context of Argentinian politics and his political ideology. Javier Milei reframes Argentina’s sovereignty claim over the Malvinas by shifting public frustration away from the territorial dispute and toward criticism of …

Uncovering Complicated Narratives And Nurturing Black Joy -- A Critical Race Exploration Of The K-12 Educational Experiences Of Black College Students, Jenell G. Jackson

LMU Theses and Dissertations

There is limited research on the educational experiences of Black students in predominantly White rural/suburban settings. This qualitative study, grounded in Black joy (Lewis-Giggetts, 2022) as a central concept, draws on Critical Race Theory (CRT) (Ladson-Billings & Tate, 1995; Solórzano, 1997), Black Critical Theory (BlackCrit) (Dumas & ross, 2016), and an endarkened feminist epistemological perspective (Dillard, 2000). It examined the K-12 educational experiences of Black college students in rural/suburban settings, focusing on how these experiences shaped their sense of belonging, positive racial identities, and the support systems and barriers they encountered, as revealed through interviews. Findings revealed that the experiences …

Epigenetic therapies facilitate transcription of immunogenic repetitive elements that cull cancer cells through ‘viral mimicry’ responses. Paradoxically, cancer-initiating events also facilitate transcription of repetitive elements. Contributions of repetitive element transcription towards cancer initiation, and the mechanisms by which cancer cells evade lethal viral mimicry responses during tumor initiation remain poorly understood. In this report, we characterize premalignant lesions of the fallopian tube along with syngeneic epithelial ovarian cancer models to explore the earliest events of tumorigenesis following loss of the p53 tumor suppressor protein. We report that p53 loss permits transcription of immunogenic repetitive elements and chronic viral mimicry activation …
