The Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse On Resilience And Empathy In Adulthood: Exploring Psychological Outcomes And Interrelationships Among Adult Survivors, Helen Dao
NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations
Background: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a traumatic experience that can have lasting psychological impacts on its survivors. Resilience and empathy are crucial for the recovery and social functioning of CSA survivors. However, the relationship between CSA and these constructs remains complex and not fully understood. Purpose: This study aimed to determine whether significant differences exist between individuals who have experienced CSA and those who have not. Additionally, the study also investigated the relationship between empathy and resilience. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 36 adult participants, including CSA survivors and non-CSA participants. The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale was used …

IMPORTANCE: The US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services launched the Accountable Care Organization (ACO) Realizing Equity, Access, and Community Health (REACH) payment model in January 2023. In contrast to prior ACO initiatives, such as the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP), ACO REACH includes equity-focused measures and payment adjustments, including an equity plan and financial risk adjustment for ACOs with higher proportions of underserved beneficiaries. However, it is unknown whether these changes have incented participation from organizations that serve beneficiaries from marginalized communities.
OBJECTIVE: To compare characteristics between participants in ACO REACH with those in MSSP and the broader pool …

An Evaluation Of Planned Settlement In The Bolivian Tropics: The 1974 Plans, Martha A. Works
The Geographical Bulletin
In the early 1960's Bolivia made the first set of attempts at colonization of the lowlands, or Oriente, lying east of the Andes. This effort was largely in response to events that had taken place earlier in the century, namely the Chaco War, the Social Revolution of 1952 and the collapse of the mining economy.1 Colonization schemes were implemented in an attempt to provide enough land for the people, increase opportunities for displaced miners, and to promote national unity by settling the eastern areas of the nation.2 The early colonization projects were concentrated in two areas -the Alto Beni (east …

Rural Development Versus Rural Preservation: Conflicting Usda Land Use Programs And Policies, Susan Oglesbee Burt
Rural Development Versus Rural Preservation: Conflicting Usda Land Use Programs And Policies, Susan Oglesbee Burt
The Geographical Bulletin
With the mounting cost of farm ownership and operation, and the rapid increase in urbanization, the issue of farmland preservation has come to the forefront in many states, counties, townships, and villages. These factors, combined with inflation, severe fluctuations in the economy, and restrictions in the use of natural resources, have brought about heightened concern on the part of farmers in recent years. Farmers and rural communities are seeking alternative ways to cope with these conditions. Sale of their land to the highest bidder is one option that often results in conversion of prime agricultural land to other uses. The …
Suburban Land-Use Policies And. Community Pressure Groups In Southfield, Michigan, Joseph H. Kogelmann
Suburban Land-Use Policies And. Community Pressure Groups In Southfield, Michigan, Joseph H. Kogelmann
The Geographical Bulletin
Creation and preservation of affluent suburban communities is dependent upon the existence of political expedients, whose primary function is to insure perpetuation of exclusionary socioeconomic barriers. Local land-use policies, as determined by municipal zoning regulations and building codes, have become mechanisms by which the status quo is maintained. The content of local land-use policies is particularly susceptible to political influence of community pressure groups. These groups are often a major force in the community decision-making process as they seek to mold local public policy in accordance with their own conceptions. Suburban elected officials have been extremely responsive to demands of …
Seasonal And Annual Precipitation Efficiency In The Eastern United States·, Jeffrey T. Lutz
Seasonal And Annual Precipitation Efficiency In The Eastern United States·, Jeffrey T. Lutz
The Geographical Bulletin
PreCipitation efficiency (Pe) is the percentage of the average atmospheric water vapor above a station that is released and falls to earth as measurable preCipitation in a given time period. Pe is a single parameter describing the efficiency of atmospheric mechanisms in releasing moisture. Temporal and spatial variations in Pe are controlled primarily by synoptic atmospheric systems. The relationship between atmospheric systems and seasonal! annual variations in Pe is investigated for the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. Regional variations in seasonal and annual averages of Pe suggest the relative effectiveness of dynamic and thermodynamic preCipitation mechanisms. Basically, the …

These listings are indeed similar, both placing emphasis in the same general areas of concern and suggested activity. However, I bel ieve a dichotomy exists, not between GTU's brochure and the Association of College Honor Societies Booklet of Information, 1981-82, but HERE within Gamma Theta Upsilon, an Interna7 tional Geographical Honor Society. Where does it say: recognize academic and mental achievements, recognize excellence of performance, reward and recognize the attainment of scholarship of a superior quality? GTU's stated purposes do not include these ideas or concerns. GTU's purposes are to create interest, to strengthen training, to make geography practical for …

Crucible Of Excellence: The Honor Society, O. Orland Maxfield
The Geographical Bulletin
It has been some time since I have heard the rather piquant phrase, "to defend one's honor." Indeed, I do not often hear the word "honor" or read of it in the current mass media. It is as though we take "honor" for granted or it has been relegated to the zone of discard along with integrity and virtue. Perhaps we have become jaundiced by the everyday, commonplace, dishonorable actions of political and business figures, and sometimes even of our closer acquaintances. Think for a moment of the aphorisms relative to honor that you have heard all of your lives. …

Once upon a time in the land of academia, there existed an esteemed Department of Geography. It was steeped in tradition and was recognized by its peers as being among the foremost academic departments in the world. Yet this recognition was inadequate to spare it from an abrupt termination. This Department of Geography whose allegiance was once claimed by such notable geographers as Carl Sauer, Preston James, George Kish and others was sentenced to extinction by the Board of Regents on June 19, 1981. It is small consolation that the doors of the Department will officially close during mid-1982. I …

Women have been denied equality, especially with respect to their male counterparts. Feminism is the theory that seeks to explain this by the norms, beliefs, and societal pressure by which women have been excluded. One predominant realm in which women have been excluded is politics. Although there has been a rise in female politicians across the world, they continue to face the same stereotypes as before. Thus, this study delves into the implications of having more female leaders, looking more specifically at liberal feminist international relations theory. By reviewing literature, this study finds that female leaders impact a variety of …

Interpretive Development In The Binding Of Isaac, Josiah Troutner, John Vonder Bruegge
Celebration of Research
Despite unimportance within the Pentateuch, the Binding of Isaac (the Aqedah) became central to later Rabbinic Jewish theology. In this essay, my goal was to identify early literary developments of that change in the Aqedah narratives of Jubilees, Philo and Josephus using the methodological premise that where sources of disparate backgrounds and rhetorical goals thematically overlap, they are more likely to represent more widely held beliefs – what I call “historical, cultural, and theological development in post-biblical self conception”. Was the Aqedah connected to the institution of the temple or Passover? Was Isaac thought to prefigure later Jewish martyrs? Was …

Assessing The Gaps Between Ethnic Populations: A Comparison Of Lipid-Lowering Interventions , Chasen Hershman, Gavin Lamott, Chester Dejong Md
Celebration of Research
Pharmacological and lifestyle interventions have been a proven strategy for lowering the cardiovascular risk in all populations. Despite this, certain ethnic populations have a greater ASCVD risk due to either high LDL levels or other factors. The goal of this review is to analyze variables (specifically LDL) that contribute to certain ethnic populations demonstrating a greater risk of CVD as well as interventions that can improve outcomes. Treatment of hyperlipidemia requires a multifactorial approach which is tailored to the individual patients’ needs. Statins continue to be first-line pharmacological therapy for the treatment of lowering LDL. When combining a healthy diet …

Utilizing Buprenorphine In Patients With Opioid Use Disorder, Emma Roush, Dani Prusha, Emily Smith, Jaclyn Freese
Celebration of Research
Buprenorphine, a partial mu-opioid agonist, is a critical medication in treating opioid use disorder (OUD) and chronic pain. It was initially developed in the 1960s, then approved for pain management in the 1980s. However, over the past two decades, buprenorphine’s use has expanded to OUD treatment, demonstrating improved patient outcomes, enhanced treatment retention, and reduced opioid use. Its longer half-life allows for less frequent dosing and greater adherence compared to full agonists. Buprenorphine also has a more favorable safety profile compared to methadone, which results in lower risks of respiratory depression and overdose.
Despite its efficacy, buprenorphine remains underused due …

The ecological services of insect pollinators are well established; therefore, the documented decline in pollinator biodiversity is of great global and local concern. Using two survey methods, our study provides baseline pollinator community data at two conservation sites in Northwest Iowa. In September of 2023, we used three colors (blue, yellow, and white) and two depths (shallow and deep) of bowl traps to investigate pollinator communities at a small prairie restoration site (Buena Vista County Park) and a nearby native prairie (The Nature Conservancy Glacial Hills Preserve). Employing modifications of the protocol suggested by the Bumble bee Atlas to collect …

An urban community-based organization conducted a study to examine demographics of individuals who use drugs and their approaches to risk reduction. A substantial proportion reported encountering significant barriers to accessing substance use disorder (SUD) services.
In collaboration with a state survey, the community organization recruited a convenience sample of individuals who actively used drugs, examining substance use patterns, healthcare access, and barriers to SUD services. Community health workers facilitated outreach efforts, focusing on harm reduction engagement, and healthcare access.
Data were collected from 55 individuals. 51% identified as male, 48% as female, and 2% as LGBTQIA+. 67% identified as White/Caucasian, …
