The Landowner As Change Agent In Rural Modernization: An Ecuadorean Example, Gene N. Franckowiak
The Landowner As Change Agent In Rural Modernization: An Ecuadorean Example, Gene N. Franckowiak
The Geographical Bulletin
In an era of impressive governmental and institutional support for rural modernization plans in developing countries, the privately financed, small-scale project can easily escape attention. A concentration of private funds and individual effort in small communities or single farms may occur for a variety of reasons ranging from humanitarian to pragmatic. Recognition may not be solicited if such gestures are designed to supplement existing law or correct difficult social problems in an environment of national political instability. Some landowners may react quite positively to highly localized problems to assure smoOlh functioning of agricultural systems where production is labor intensive. These …

News From Our Chapters By Michael L. Thaller, Robert M. Ward
The Geographical Bulletin
This year marks the beginning of the inclusion of chapter news formerly included in the International Newsletter within an expanded BUlletin. Chapter news was selected to provide chapters with hopefully interesting, new or unusual ideas. Many chapters that reported full and active years, but did nothing particularly unique will not find their news reported here. The editor wishes to thank all those who submitted news items for the Newsletter and hopes that those who do not find their chapter's news here will not feel that this negatively reflects on what were in many cases active and successful yearly programs. Deconstructing The Afd: An Analysis Of The German Right-Wing Populist Political Party, The Alternative For Germany (Vchc Poster), Elizabeth A. Breckenridge
Research and Creativity Symposium
The Alternativ für Deutschland (Alternative for Germany) (AfD) is a far-right populist party that has quickly grown in power within the past decade, particularly in Eastern German states, due to its emphasis on nationalization, populist rhetoric, and attraction to voters’ fears about immigration and cultural change. The AfD has managed to mobilize strong voting support within five years, gaining parliamentary seats in the Bundestag (Federal Parliament) in 2017, and is now considered the main opposition party to the established parties. The AfD is the first right-wing party to gain significant voting attention since 1945, capitalizing on the rise of right-wing …

Exploring Popular History And Its Constructors: An Analysis Of Goodreads And Librarything User Data, Moira Fiscus
Conference Papers and Presentations
Using data from Goodreads and LibraryThing to find widely read popular history books, this research discovered a significant subject and author gap in what is being read by the general public. 152 books were found to be widely reviewed on these websites with the greater majority of books being on Traditional History topics which are typically about “Great Men,” war, or well-known historical events. Of 101 authors, only eighteen were women and five were BIPOC. This shows a gap in what the public is learning. Librarians and other stakeholders should consider how they can help bridge this gap.

Reading The Rainbow Together: A Workshop On Lgbtqia+ Themes And Identities In Library Collections, Alicia G. Vaandering, Amanda Melilli, James W. Rosenzwing
Public Services Faculty Presentations
Although libraries are facing a substantial increase in book challenges that disproportionately target queer books, many librarians have had limited opportunities for professional development in understanding queer representation in library collections. In this workshop, participants will use the Rainbow Representation Rubric to analyze queer narratives and identities in brief example texts (book reviews and picture books). The presenters will guide participants in discussions that prepare them to support their communities by developing collections that capture the true diversity of queer experiences.

Pro: The Use Of Sugammadex Does Not Preclude The Need For Objective Neuromuscular Monitoring., J Ross Renew, Dustin D. Linn
Parkview Pharmacy Department
Based on strong evidence, optimal management of neuromuscular block should incorporate objective (or quantitative) neuromuscular monitoring with appropriately dosed antagonists such as sugammadex. Sugammadex has the unique ability to antagonize aminosteroidal-induced neuromuscular block at any level; however, neostigmine is a reasonable alternative at minimal levels. Blind or excessive administration of sugammadex does not eliminate the risk of patients having postoperative residual neuromuscular block. Significant variability exists in how patients respond both to neuromuscular blocking agents and their antagonists.

Maxwell’S Equations Optimizer (Meo): A New Physics Based Metaheuristic Optimization Algorithm For Solving Optimization Problems, Samia Mandour, Abduallah Gamal, Ahmed Sleem, Mohamed Belal, Nebojsa Bacanin
Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal
In this paper, a new metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the principles of physics called Maxwell's Equations Optimizer (MEO) is presented. Maxwell's are considered one of the most well-known equations in the field of physics. These equations are a set of four equations that describe the behavior of electric and magnetic fields, their interactions and the influence of objects. Simulating how equations behave is the core concept of MEO. These equations behave according to two main behaviors. They are as follows: divergence behavior, and curl behavior. Divergence measures the tendency of the charge to collect or disperse at a point (exploration …

Given the high prevalence of sleep problems in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), there is a critical need to examine how sleep problems may be exacerbated for children exposed to social and environmental adversity. Guided by the socio-ecological model, this review aimed to evaluate factors linked to sleep health disparities (SHDs) in children with ASD, determine possible gaps/limitations in existing literature, and identify possible solutions. A scoping review was selected to ascertain what is known about SHDs in ASD. Four databases identified articles from 2004 to 2023. Included articles were those conducted in children with ASD that focused on …

The Effects Of A Tier 1 Self-Regulation Intervention On Elementary Students’ Engagement And Reading Comprehension, Kaitlin Reichart, Hank Bohanon, Gina Coffee
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
As students’ emotional self-regulation impacts their engagement in learning, as well as their mental health, researchers have called for schools to implement systems of emotional support. However, because school resources are limited, and the demands on teachers’ time continue to grow, identifying emotional self-regulation interventions that teachers can easily implement within their classrooms can be beneficial for student well-being. This study examined the effects of a Tier 1 Self-Regulation Intervention on student engagement and reading comprehension. Within an A-B-A-B-A-B reversal design, a pilot self-regulation intervention was implemented in two classrooms over six weeks. The study’s results indicated that the intervention …

Background: Soil is a reservoir for many parasites that can affect human and animal health, especially in tropical regions where soil-transmitted helminths and protozoa thrive. Understanding how environmental factors influence parasite distribution will provide a basis for relating how climate changes may intensify their impacts, altering parasite habitats and increasing transmission risks. We surveyed soil parasite prevalence, burden, and diversity in several different Peruvian environmental ecologies to catalog current parasite presence and provide a baseline for future surveys.
Methods: A total of 198 soil samples from 43 locations across three Peruvian regions-Tingo María (TM) (Amazon rainforest), Andabamba/Marabamba (A/M) (Andean highlands), …

Background: Exposomes are critical drivers of carcinogenesis. However, how they modulate tumor behavior remains unclear. Extensive clinical data show cigarette smoke to be a key exposome that promotes aggressive tumors, higher rates of metastasis, reduced response to chemoradiotherapy, and suppressed anti-tumor immunity. We sought to determine whether smoke itself can modulate aggressive tumor behavior in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) through reprogramming of the cellular reductive state.
Methods: Using established human and murine HNSCC cell lines and syngeneic mouse models, we utilized conventional western blotting, steady state and flux metabolomics, RNA sequencing, quantitative proteomics and flow cytometry to …

INTRODUCTION: Acute pain is commonly experienced by millions of patients who undergo outpatient surgical procedures. Moreover, an increasing number of procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, requiring greater postoperative planning to ensure effective pain management. Analgesic approaches commonly involve prescription opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), but an optimal regimen that balances pain and adverse effects has not been identified. In addition, critical gaps in evidence exist regarding how opioids and NSAIDs compare as analgesic regimens after surgery.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The Comparing Analgesic Regimen Effectiveness and Safety after Surgery (CARES) trial is a pragmatic, international, multicentre randomised trial …

Background
Despite over 200 evidence-based dementia caregiver programs, we know little about the best approaches for optimally scaling these programs in daily service contexts, nor do we fully understand the most effective approaches of ensuring successful implementation. As a result, a small fraction of the many individuals living with dementia and their caregivers within in the US have access to evidence-based programs. A leading barrier to implementation of evidence-based dementia caregiver support programs into long-term care settings is the lack of streamlined, scalable, user-friendly, and tested training modalities. Objective

This collection of seven diverse assignments written by students from under-represented communities for a first-year inquiry class on immigration, migration, and belonging illustrates how instructors can facilitate a sense of belonging or acompañamiento through course assignments, assessment instruments. Each of the student authors provides a retrospective introduction on how their personal reflection, essay, or research project helped them to make personal connections within or outside of the class. The instructor provides a brief introduction to the concept of acompañamiento and why it is particularly important for New Majority college students.
