Momoh, Sheu Gbolahan Odu-Onikosi, Folasade Damilola Amulejoye, Joshua Wilson, Benjamin Eynon, Holger Kühlwein, Victor Kuri, Daniel L. Merrifield

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Soybean meal (SBM) is commonly used in aquafeeds due to its wide availability, reasonable protein content, and cost-effectiveness. However, high SBM inclusion levels in the diets of carnivorous fish, such as Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), can cause soybean meal-induced enteritis (SBMIE), resulting in compromised gut health, reduced nutrient absorption, and impaired growth. An 8-week study was conducted to evaluate the potential of brewers’ yeast-derived functional feed additives (FFAs), specifically yeast cell wall β-glucans (PβG [purified β-glucan]) and yeast cytosolic extracts (YEs), to mitigate the adverse effects of SBMIE in Atlantic salmon parr. Fish were fed diets containing 30% SBM (30-SBM) …

Argentine Diaspora In The United States: Experiences Of Recent Emigrants And Their Ties With The Homeland, Anabela Cibele Villach Vaquer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the Argentine diaspora settled in the United States. It analyzes both the experiences of Argentines who have migrated to the United States in the last decade and the transnational ties they develop with the home country as well as the diaspora engagement policies put in place by the Argentine State. The research addresses three key questions: What are the main characteristics of Argentine emigrants who have moved to the United States over the past decade? How do recent Argentine migrants in the United States construct and maintain their transnational ties with their country of origin? Is the …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Tetraploidy (4n = 92 chromosomes) and near-tetraploidy (81-103 chromosomes) (T/NT) are uncommon cytogenetic events in MDS/AML (~1%). Abnormalities reported to be associated with T/NT MDS/AML include -5/del(5q), -7/del(7q), +8, and +21. However, other clinically relevant abnormalities likely remain "hidden" in long strings of ISCN cytogenetic nomenclature when evaluated visually. To date, no studies have had the statistical power and a computational method to identify novel recurrent abnormalities associated with the T/NT karyotype or overall survival (OS).

METHODS: Using CytoGPS, a bioinformatic tool we developed, we converted karyotypes from a combined cohort of 75 T/NT MDS/AML cases from two institutions …

A Computational Framework For Investigating Novel Bacterial Conjugation Inhibitors, Serena Tuytschaevers Apr 2025

A Computational Framework For Investigating Novel Bacterial Conjugation Inhibitors, Serena Tuytschaevers

Theses

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global threat, contributing to an estimated 700,000 deaths annually. One of the main ways that AMR genes spread among bacteria is through conjugation. Therefore, it is crucial to develop conjugation inhibitors (COINs) to combat AMR. Shared characteristics between known COIN molecules are a hydrophobic tail, unsaturations, and a polar head. Considering these characteristics and accounting for the efficacy of 2-hexadecynoic acid and Tanzawaic Acids (TZAs) low toxicity, we designed a new set of TZA analogs. The predicted protein target of previously identified COINs is TrwD, an ATPase in the type IV secretion system (T4SS). …

Characterization Of Selective Laser Melted Ti6al4v Tpms Porous Structures For Biomedical Applications, Babak Ziaie, Longjiang Niu, Waqas Saleem, Liyong Ni, Muhammad Faisal Rathore, Xavier Velay

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Metal additive manufacturing methods, particularly powder bed fusion techniques like selective laser melting, have revolutionized the production of complex geometries that were previously unachievable using conventional manufacturing methods. Among these geometries, porous structures, especially Triply Periodic Minimal Surface structures, are particularly interesting for biomedical applications. These structures possess an interconnected open-cell configuration and mechanical properties, which closely mimic the architecture and behavior of natural bone. This characteristic is critical in reducing common issues, such as stress shielding in biomedical implants, where mismatches in stiffness between the implant and the surrounding bone lead to bone resorption and implant failure. This experimental …

Introduction: In December 2019, the novel SARS-CoV-2 triggered a global pneumonia outbreak, leading to millions of deaths worldwide. A subset of survivors faces increased morbidity and mortality, particularly due to subacute lung injury evolving to chronic fibrosing interstitial lung disease. While nintedanib, a tyrosine-kinase inhibitor, shows promise in treating progressive fibrotic lung disease, limited randomised trial data exists for post-COVID-19-induced lung injury. We hypothesise that treatment with nintedanib may attenuate advancement to the fibrotic stages, offering a potential avenue for improving outcomes in this specific patient subset.

Methods and analysis: We describe the design of a multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled …

The red nucleus, a large brainstem structure, coordinates limb movement for locomotion in quadrupedal animals. In humans, its pattern of anatomical connectivity differs from that of quadrupeds, suggesting a different purpose. Here, we apply our most advanced resting-state functional connectivity based precision functional mapping in highly sampled individuals (n = 5), resting-state functional connectivity in large group-averaged datasets (combined n ~ 45,000), and task based analysis of reward, motor, and action related contrasts from group-averaged datasets (n > 1000) and meta-analyses (n > 14,000 studies) to precisely examine red nucleus function. Notably, red nucleus functional connectivity with motor-effector networks (somatomotor hand, foot, …

Is Physical Therapy Recommended For People With Parkinson's Disease Treated With Subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation? A Delphi Consensus Study, Matteo Guidetti, Ryan Duncan, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Although deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) induces motor benefits in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD), its effect on motor axial symptoms (e.g., postural instability, trunk posture alterations) and gait impairments (e.g., freezing of gait) is still ambiguous. Physical therapy (PT) effectively complements pharmacological treatment to improve postural stability, gait performance, and other dopamine-resistant symptoms (e.g. freezing of gait) in the general population with PD. Despite the positive potential of combined PT and STN-DBS surgery, scientific results are still lacking. We therefore involved worldwide leading experts on DBS and motor rehabilitation in PwPD in a consensus Delphi …

Who Supports Democracy In The Post-Arab Spring Maghreb?, Jacob Sagers Apr 2025

Who Supports Democracy In The Post-Arab Spring Maghreb?, Jacob Sagers

Student Research Symposium

Background

During the Arab Spring in 2011, youth became the backbone of protests and a force for democratic change. Particularly in Tunisia – the heart of the Spring– youth had a dominant role in starting protests and toppling regimes. Extant literature's mixed findings on wealth’s positive association with democratization processes suggest democracy’s support depends on public opinion and age. Building off fieldwork and interviews with students in Tunisia, my study focuses on economic development and its impact on public opinion.

Racism On Social Media, Britton Larsen

Student Research Symposium

For centuries, racism has been an issue in society; however, the emergence of social media has drastically altered the landscape of the vulgarity and encounter of racist content. Social media has become a crucial communication, advocacy, and information battleground. While these platforms have provided a voice through which underprivileged populations become equal in terms of advocating for equality and justice, the same platforms have nurtured the breeding ground for hate messages and discriminatory ideologies. This research will look to explore the relationship between social media and racism, doing so to look at how these social media platforms amplify racist content …

Environmental Racism: The Role Of Racism In The Unequal Distribution Of Environmental Hazards And Resources In Urban Areas, Acadia Petersen Apr 2025

Environmental Racism: The Role Of Racism In The Unequal Distribution Of Environmental Hazards And Resources In Urban Areas, Acadia Petersen

Student Research Symposium

Introduction

There is a large difference in the number of environmental hazards and environmental resources that people live with depending on their race. This is very damaging as certain minorities are being provided with fewer resources and more polluted areas, leading to worse health outcomes.

There is “A strong association between non-white and poor communities and the location of hazardous waste sites…Studies on air quality have documented that minorities and the poor face higher levels of air pollution than other groups” (Pinderhughes 1996).
