Association Between Arsenic And Other Heavy Metal Exposures Through Drinking Water And Food With Lung Function And Respiratory Symptoms: A Cross-Sectional Study, Sofia I. Chapela Lara, Seth O'Neal Md, Mph For The Cysticercosis Working Group In Peru

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference

Impaired lung function is a major health concern, particularly in children, as it increases the risk of chronic respiratory diseases and long-term morbidity. Environmental exposure to heavy metals (HMs) such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, and manganese has been associated with reduced lung function and respiratory symptoms. However, findings vary by exposure context and population, with limited research in pediatric populations and few studies evaluating the combined effects of multiple HMs. These exposures disproportionally affect marginalized rural communities, especially in low and middle-income countries with mining activities. This cross-sectional study investigated the association between exposure to As and other HMs through …

Intersectional Experiences Of Stem Students With Disabilities, Sandy Heath, Jade Metzger, Tarah Loy-Ashe

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities experience barriers to accessing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers during academic preparation for these careers. This pilot project explored the experiences of postsecondary STEM students who have a disability. The six students interviewed gave their insights into the need to further diversify who has access to STEM careers by describing that cultural and structural barriers posed more of a barrier than the course content during their STEM education. Academic preparation often starts in early childhood education with exposure to STEM topics and continues through postsecondary education. The implications impact both the individual student and society. …

Insights From Ethnobotanical Research In North America, Latin America, And West Africa Into The Phytochemical Quality, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, And Toxicology Of Botanicals, Robin Marles

Oxford ICSB

Insights perhaps worth sharing have been gained over a career spanning 50 years of ethnobotanical and pharmacognostic research on botanicals of Canada, Mexico, Ecuador, and Togo, and the development of standards on the quality, safety, and evidence-based uses of botanicals in health products and foods. Perspectives provided by traditional healers in these countries have informed approaches to a better understanding of, and possible goals for future research on traditionally used plants. This includes their phytochemical quality; absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion; possible mechanisms of action; and potential safety concerns. These insights will be illustrated by specific examples from research conducted …

Heavy Metals In Healthy Water Samples Used By Newborn In Al-Najaf Governorate, Iraq, Ban Hussein Ali, Ali Abid Abojassim

Al-Bahir

Water is essential for life, so monitoring water quality is important. This research focuses on measuring heavy metals (Lead, Pb; Cadmium, Cd; Chromium, Cr (in 14 healthy water samples of two types; bottled water and filtered water used by newborn children in Al-Najaf governorate, Iraq. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AA-7000, Japan) was used to conduct the experimental analysis. Also, health risks parameters (non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic) due to Pd, Cd, and Cr concentrations were calculated. The results of Pb, Cd, and Cr concentrations in mg/L for bottled water samples were ranged 0.03-0.83, 0.01-0.69, and 0.01-0.76, respectively, while the range values for filter …

Some Characterizations Of Weakly Pseudo Semi 2-Absorbing Submodules In Terms Of Some Types Of Modules, Omar H. Taha, Omar A. Abdullah, Ali Sh. Ajeel

Al-Bahir

The purpose of this paper is to investigate characterizations of weakly pseudo semi-2-absorbing submodules in terms of some types of modules. We provide characterizations for the class of multiplication modules with the help of some types of modules such as faithful, non-singular, Z-regular, and projective modules. Furthermore, we add some conditions to proof the residual of a weakly pseudo semi-2-absorbing submodule is a weakly pseudo semi-2-absorbing ideal.

Preparation Of Nanoparticles And Study Of The Effect Of Some Of Their Physical Properties On Epoxy Polymer, Aya N. Abdullah, Niran F. Abeduljabbar

Al-Bahir

Nanoparticles were prepared by the laboratory thermal method from copper, magnesium, and zinc oxides. Different nanoparticles were added to epoxy at weight fractions of (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) wt. %. The structural results from X-ray diffraction showed the appearance of epoxy in a random system, and when reinforced with nanopowders at higher addition ratios, we find the appearance of nanoparticles in a clear crystalline form, while the SEM results showed an increase in consistency and homogeneity with each increase in the proportions of nanoparticles, which appeared clearly during the EDX examination. The hardness of Shore type D was …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

In the modern global pig industry, there is a growing interest in animal-friendly agriculture, encouraging farmers to prioritize humane practices and meet the welfare needs of their animals. In developed countries, consumers are increasingly concerned about animal welfare, particularly regarding pigs as social animals, advocating for their housing in groups that reflect their natural behaviors in the wild. There is significant societal pressure to eliminate the use of crate systems, which cause discomfort to animals in commercial farming. In these systems, breeding females are often restricted in movement throughout the reproductive cycle. As a result, alternative husbandry and housing systems …

A Woman Scorned: Medea In The Last Century, Megan Fox

2025 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

The character Zara in William Congreve’s 1627 tragedy The Mourning Bride declares in Act Three Scene Two, “Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell a fury like a woman scorned” (Congreve 64). Sentiments like this have carried on throughout history to describe the true anger and rage attributed to women, and this is oftentimes represented in media. And there is no more furious, scorned woman, than Medea, the titular character in Euripides’ 431 BCE tragedy. While they do not typically resort to the violence and sorcery that Medea does in this play, Medea has represented the …

No. 24-2003
Marvin Owens v. Gary Schuette

On Appeal from the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Case No. 2:24-cv-10787

From the Summary of the Argument

This appeal requires the Court to correct an error below—derived from a recently abrogated error in this Court’s own precedent—that denies the full remedial protections enacted to safeguard religious exercise under RLUIPA. The only question is whether RLUIPA allows courts to award damages against counties and their officials. The only answer—especially following the Supreme Court’s unanimous interpretation of an identical provision in RFRA—is yes.
