A Levinasian Investigation Of Leaders Learning Humility, Spencer Fumio Yamada Apr 2025

A Levinasian Investigation Of Leaders Learning Humility, Spencer Fumio Yamada

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the development of humility in individuals and business organizations. Humility in business leadership has received increased attention in recent years; however, little is known regarding how individuals and organizations become more humble. The first article in this dissertation is a theoretical examination of humility and argues that the philosophy of ethicist and phenomenologist Emmanuel Levinas provides a theoretical lens by which the development of humility could be productively explored. Levinas argued that the human experience is based on the ethical responsibility that individuals have towards one another, providing a set of assumptions for an examination of professional …

Development Of A Qualitative Spot Assay For Zinc Detection In Fortified Cereal Grain Matrices, Ashley L. Lamborn

Theses and Dissertations

The present thesis is a compilation of a literature review, journal manuscript, and two standard operating procedures (SOP) on the qualitative determination of zinc in fortified cereal grain products and matrices. The literature review addresses the premise of the research as well as potential solutions for the development of a rapid qualitative spot assay for zinc determination. Quality assurance assays affirm the presence of micronutrients in food fortification initiatives, but no rapid qualitative spot methods for the assessment of zinc currently exist. Chromogenic reagents that may perform a key role in the rapid determination of zinc are identified. The journal …

Championing Equity, Encountering Burnout: A Historical Analysis Of The Influence Of Educational Accountability Policies On Teacher Well-Being, Andrea Summers Apr 2025

Championing Equity, Encountering Burnout: A Historical Analysis Of The Influence Of Educational Accountability Policies On Teacher Well-Being, Andrea Summers

JWU Dissertations & Theses

This study explores the relationship between U.S. educational accountability policies and teacher well-being. While researchers have established the instrumental role of teachers in shaping student academic achievement and lifetime outcomes (Darling-Hammond, 2000; Hanushek, 2019), many teachers grapple with high levels of stress and burnout (Steiner & Woo, 2021), which negatively impacts teacher well-being (Herman et al., 2018; Turner & Thielking 2019). The era of educational accountability was initiated to improve K-12 education and ensure equity and excellence for all students (Figlio & Loeb, 2011); however, it has coincided with, and may have exacerbated, teacher stress and burnout (Trinidad, 2023). To …

Life After Death: Investigating The Resistance And Recovery Of Fungal Communities To Foundation Tree Mortality, Jessie F. Marlenee Apr 2025

Life After Death: Investigating The Resistance And Recovery Of Fungal Communities To Foundation Tree Mortality, Jessie F. Marlenee

Biology ETDs

Tree mortality can have cascading effects on the composition and resilience of interacting fungal communities. Yet, little is known about the impact tree mortality, distinct from abiotic drivers (i.e., drought), has on these communities. This dissertation focuses on the resilience of fungal communities to experimental tree mortality in a piñon-juniper woodland. In chapter one, I found that piñon mortality reduced piñon fine root biomass and piñon mycorrhizal fungal diversity, whereas juniper mycorrhizal fungi were unaffected by juniper mortality. In chapter two, I revealed that piñon mortality altered the composition and spatial structure of mycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi in the soil, …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Holographic Lenses Recorded In Photopolymers With High Refractive Index Modulation For Application In Solar Concentration, Brian Rogers, Paola Galli, Suzanne Martin, Andrea Bianco, Izabela Naydenova

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Holographic optical elements have a history of use in solar concentrating devices. One of the most significant challenges of using these elements in real-life devices is their typically high angular and spectral selectivity. A possible solution to expanding their operational range is using thinner devices, but to achieve high diffraction efficiency, a recording material with a high refractive index is required. In this work, a photopolymer with high refractive index modulation is used to create volume holographic lenses in layers as thin as 10 µm, while maintaining high diffraction efficiency. These lenses are designed for minimal angular selectivity, while still …

Can I Trust You To Be A Friend? Investigating The Role Of Women's Friendship Preferences In Friendship-Making Decisions, Annie Boyle, Jessica D. Ayers Apr 2025

Can I Trust You To Be A Friend? Investigating The Role Of Women's Friendship Preferences In Friendship-Making Decisions, Annie Boyle, Jessica D. Ayers

2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase

Although research has documented the importance of friends, little research has explored the impact of women’s preferences on whether people want to be their friends. This study builds off Bradshaw (2021) to investigate how women’s friendship preferences influence the likelihood of her pursuing potential friends. We hypothesized that 1) women who prefer to have male friends (guys’ girls) would have higher sociosexual orientation (SOI) scores compared to women who prefer to have female friends (girls’ girls) and 2) participants who viewed a profile of a guys’ girl would rate her as having lower SOI attitudes than participants who viewed a …

The Illusion Of Sustainable Development: An Analysis Of Economic Impact And Social Consequences Of The Mayan Train In Yucatán, Melanie Figueroa Zavala

2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase

As nations pursue economic growth, sustainable development has been positioned as a means to balance economic expansion with environmental consciousness and social equity. However, the reality of such initiatives reveals a troubling contradiction. While sustainable development projects such as ecotourism, clean energy, and infrastructure are presented as mechanisms for economic and environmental improvement, they frequently exacerbate socio-economic disparities and displace vulnerable communities. This study looks at sustainable development projects in Mexico, utilizing the Tren Maya or Mayan Train as a key case study that showcases the political, social, and economic nuances of sustainable development.

Rather than fostering local empowerment, most …
