Investigating Christian Counselors' Emphasis On Marriage Vows As A Sacred Covenant In Premarital Counseling, Lovie J. Faine

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety” (King James Bible, 2017; Proverbs 11:14). This proverb suggests that counsel can provide a level of security. Premarital counsel is a type of provisional assistance and guidance sought by couples seeking to shelter and strengthen their union. Within the church pastors and elders often provide Christian counseling to congregants for various reasons, including premarital counseling. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to discover pastors and elders that operate as Christian counselors’ emphasis on marriage vows as a sacred covenant within …

Pathway Out Of Homelessness, Budwa (Bud) Sous Apr 2025

Pathway Out Of Homelessness, Budwa (Bud) Sous

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This phenomenological case study aims to understand the homeless individuals' relational Transformational Experience (TE) and their choice to complete the transitional pathway journey from homelessness at a faith-based shelter. Developed in 1938 by John Dewy, TE has become a comprehensive and complex framework that describes how learners interpret, confirm, and give meaning to their experiences. As a result, this study's framework uses a hermeneutic and relational approach to explore and highlight relational barriers the homeless faced following their transition out of a Midwest homeless shelter. However, research has not adequately recognized how a restored relationship contributes to cognitive and behavioral …

Factors Influencing The Success Of Modern Wind Band Transcriptions Re(New)Al By Viet Cuong, Bells For Stokowski By Michael Daugherty, And Masks And Machines By Paul Dooley, Edward F. Protzman Apr 2025

Factors Influencing The Success Of Modern Wind Band Transcriptions Re(New)Al By Viet Cuong, Bells For Stokowski By Michael Daugherty, And Masks And Machines By Paul Dooley, Edward F. Protzman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Transcriptions have played a significant role in wind band literature since the end of the Renaissance period. Due to a desire for more significant original band works in the1900s and the existence of many low-quality transcriptions, conductors often view orchestral transcription as a lesser part of the wind band canon. Contemporary wind band transcriptions like Re(new)al by Viet Cuong, Bells for Stokowski by Michael Daugherty, and Masks and Machines by Paul Dooley are significant works in both the orchestral and band repertoire. This study investigates how instrumentation, sonic variety, acceptance of new music by wind band conductors, composition prizes, and …

Lead Pastor Stress: A Quantitative Study Of The Effects On Mental Health, Marriage, Family, And The Church, Sherri Lee Bergeron

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The church’s lead pastor has many roles and responsibilities, from teaching the Word of the Lord, baptisms, counseling sessions, and leading a staff. These are not the lead pastor’s only role; the majority also have a family, children, and a spouse at home who also need their attention. A balance must be considered between the ministry, family, and marriage. If this balance is off or the pastor becomes overwhelmed with any or all the three, their mental health may suffer and can cause depression and anxiety if not dealt with appropriately (Christianity Today, 2022). Lead pastors, while in ministry, have …

Converting Membership Into Discipleship: A Spiritual Formation Program In Discipleship For Rural African American Churches, Ernest L. Williams Sr.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This thesis project addresses the need for rural African American churches to focus on spiritual formation and discipleship for their parishioners. Churches that emphasize the importance of the gospel and believers’ daily commitment to it represent progress toward discipleship. Discipleship creates a connection between worship and lifestyle. Churchgoers, particularly African American Christians in rural settings, may struggle to understand and practice discipleship. Historically, church worship and attendance have been prioritized in this faith community. However, Sunday worship that fails to provide a plan for daily spiritual formation may contribute to the issue. If the gospel is not the church’s primary …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Microbial succession during postnatal gut development in mice is likely impacted by site of sampling, time, intestinal injury, and host genetics. We investigated this in wild-type and Sigirr transgenic mice that encode the p.Y168X mutation identified in a neonate with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Temporal profiling of the ileal and colonic microbiome after birth to weaning revealed a clear pattern of progression from a less diverse, Proteobacteria/Escherichia_Shigella dominant community to a more diverse, Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes dominant community. Formula milk feeding, a risk factor for necrotizing enterocolitis, decreased Firmicutes and increased Proteobacteria leading to enrichment of bacterial genes denoting exaggerated glycolysis and increased …

The Ethics Of Bypassing Unos Allocation Rules To Save A Patient, Kayrha Augustus

Student Publications and Presentations

Every ten minutes, someone is added to the organ transplantation waiting list, but not everyone has an equal chance of receiving a life-saving organ. This presentation explores whether a surgeon should break the rules of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to save a patient who has been unfairly placed lower on the list due to systemic biases. This presentation shows that the organ allocation system that should be fair has very evident flaws. In cases like Mickey Mantle, where celebrities have received transplants quickly, concerns about favoritism were raised. Additionally, the use of race-based calculations that overestimated kidney …

Despite overwhelming scientific evidence on climate change, skepticism persists, influencing public resistance to policies and governmental inaction. This study analyzes survey data (doi.org/10.1038/s41597-024-04100-7) from 68 countries to explore public trust in scientists, sources of science information, emotional responses to climate change, and policy support. Findings indicate that while the public generally trusts scientists’ expertise and intelligence, concerns remain about their transparency and ethics. Trust in scientists is 23% higher than distrust and positively correlates with climate policy support (r = 0.30), whereas political conservatism is linked to lower trust (β = -0.0258, p < 0.001). Science communication plays a key role—TV/radio and news websites/apps are the most trusted sources, followed by social media. Regression analysis shows TV/radio increases trust by ~4%, while news websites/apps increase trust by 3.7%. Social media has a weaker effect (β = 0.00005, p > 0.05). Emotionally, anxiety and helplessness are felt …

Equity In Wellness Program Participation: Bridging The Ses Gap, Brandy Whitford Apr 2025

Equity In Wellness Program Participation: Bridging The Ses Gap, Brandy Whitford

Student Publications and Presentations

Thriving workplaces start with thriving employees’ yet many wellness programs fail to reach those who need them most. Workplace wellness programs strive to improve employees’ physical, mental, and financial well-being (Kaplan et al., 2021). Unfortunately, socioeconomic disparities limit employee participation in employers' wellness programs (Pitesa & Pillutla, 2019). Low socioeconomic status (SES) employees struggle with financial constraints, time limitations, and cultural mismatches that hinder participation (Gifford & Zongrone, 2020). The research on equity in wellness program participation reveals how SES plays a role in workplace wellness engagement and outlines equity-promoting strategies. Research demonstrates that financial incentives, paid wellness time, and …

Mechanism Of Dna Replication Fork Breakage And Parp1 Hyperactivation During Replication Catastrophe, Pedro Ortega, Elodie Bournique, Junyi Li, Ambrocio Sanchez, Gisselle Santiago, Brooke R Harris, Josefine Striepen, John Maciejowski, Abby M Green, Rémi Buisson

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3-related (ATR) inhibition triggers a surge in origin firing, resulting in increased levels of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) that rapidly deplete all available RPA. This leaves ssDNA unprotected and susceptible to breakage, a phenomenon known as replication catastrophe. However, the mechanism by which unprotected ssDNA breaks remains unclear. Here, we reveal that APOBEC3B is the key enzyme targeting unprotected ssDNA at replication forks, initiating a reaction cascade that induces fork collapse and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1) hyperactivation. Mechanistically, we demonstrate that uracils generated by APOBEC3B at replication forks are removed by UNG2, resulting in abasic sites that are …
