Analysis Of Alternative Sustainable Approach To Concrete Mixture Design, Rebecca Babcock, Talat Salama Apr 2025

Analysis Of Alternative Sustainable Approach To Concrete Mixture Design, Rebecca Babcock, Talat Salama

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

Sustainability is a growing area of concern, especially amid the concrete industry. Concrete, especially traditional concrete, which contains Portland cement, is extremely harmful to the environment producing mass amounts of carbon dioxide. Additionally, the harvesting of these materials, like lime, cause significant damage to waterways and the ecosystem. For years, studies have found numerous, more sustainable, alternatives that are structurally equivalent to traditional concrete. The Connecticut Department of Transportation does allow for the use of alternative “green” concretes as long as the mix designs meet the required specifications. Nevertheless, heavy highway construction seems reluctant to dabble with new substances and …

Implementation Of Shear Wave Velocity And Standard Penetration Test Correlation For Edirne District, Turkey, Kaveh Dehghanian, Emrah Çaltılı, Beste Koçak, Hakan Murat Soysal

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

It is critical to determine the shear wave velocity (Vs) for earthquake resistant construction design and ground improvement methods. Vs is used in geotechnical earthquake engineering and microzonation studies to calculate the stresses and strong motion characteristics that an earthquake will generate in the soil layers. Characterization of soil and rock small-strain shear modulus and shear wave velocity is an essential component of different seismic analyses such as ground classification, hazard analysis, site-response analysis, and soil-structure interaction. Due to the high expense of seismic testing in comparison to other field tests, these tests are often favored in more significant projects. …

Besides, research studies have also shown that glass powder not only contributes positively to strength and durability properties, but also reduces the amount of cement used, energy and cost losses. This paper presents current studies on waste glass powder, one of the by-products used in self-compacting concrete. Information was given about the physical …

Effect Of Opening Layout And Sheathing On Lateral Load Bearing Capacity In Wooden Shear Walls, Erdem Kazım Demirkıran, Nabi Volkan Gür Apr 2025

Effect Of Opening Layout And Sheathing On Lateral Load Bearing Capacity In Wooden Shear Walls, Erdem Kazım Demirkıran, Nabi Volkan Gür

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

Wood is preferred as building material in earthquake zones thanks to its light-weight. In countries with high seismic activity, wooden construction systems are required to be resistant to lateral and vertical loads. In traditional architecture, lateral load resistance is ensured with filled and unfilled walls which are strengthened with braces. In present day lateral load resistance is ensured with wooden shear walls formed by sheathings covered on the wall frame. Wooden shear walls may contain openings such as windows, doors and service channels. These types of openings reduce rigidity in wooden shear walls. The opening ratio, opening location, sheathing thickness …
