An Analysis Of New York’S Drug Policies: Comparing The Effectiveness Of Punitive Punishment Versus Rehabilitation In Preventing Recidivism, Zed Agarwal

Student Publications & Research

The persistent failure of punitive drug policies, exemplified by the Rockefeller Drug Laws, necessitates a critical re-examination of how society addresses drug offenses. For decades, New York State has been at the forefront of both the implementation of harsh drug sentencing laws and the subsequent development of innovative rehabilitation alternatives. The trajectory of this policy evolution reveals a profound shift in understanding the nature of addiction and the most effective approaches to reducing drug-related crime. When New York enacted the Rockefeller Drug Laws in 1973, they represented the epitome of punitive drug policy by imposing mandatory minimum sentences of fifteen …

Verlan: Resistance To French Linguistic Standards By Maghrebi Communities, Phaedra Dunnigan Apr 2025

Verlan: Resistance To French Linguistic Standards By Maghrebi Communities, Phaedra Dunnigan

Honors Theses

From the moment language is acquired, it comes with implicit rules that structure communication and establish social expectations. “Proper” speech is linked to compliance and is often used to assess a person’s intelligence, identity, and social status. For this reason, language moves beyond communication and is used for deeper associative meanings that can group, judge, silence, and empower individuals.

Therefore, those who diverge from linguistic norms, whether by choice, necessity, or exclusion, often face significant social consequences. Language becomes an indicator of social conformity, while deviation can be a form of resistance. This resistance is particularly common among marginalized communities …

Testing For Normality In Regression Models: Mistakes Abound (But May Not Matter), Stephen Midway, J. Wilson White Apr 2025

Testing For Normality In Regression Models: Mistakes Abound (But May Not Matter), Stephen Midway, J. Wilson White

Faculty Publications

This study examines the misuse of normality tests in linear regression within ecology and biology, focusing on common misconceptions. A bibliometric review found that over 70% of ecology papers and 90% of biology papers incorrectly applied normality tests to raw data instead of model residuals. To assess the impact of this error, we simulated datasets with normal, interval, and skewed distributions across various sample and effect sizes. We compared statistical power between two approaches: testing the whole dataset for normality (incorrect) versus testing model residuals (correct) to determine whether to use a parametric (t-test) or nonparametric (Mann-Whitney U test) method. …

Bhakti: Jurnal Pengabdian Masyarakat

Indonesia’s coastal and archipelagic regions are vulnerable to disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods. In this context, community service activities require participatory and educational approaches that are easily understood by people of various ages and backgrounds. This article discusses the use of visual aids—such as infographics, leaflets, animated videos, illustrations, and x-banners—as tools for disaster education. Through a literature review of four articles on community service programs, this study finds that visual aids are effective in increasing disaster risk awareness, reinforcing visual memory of mitigation procedures, and engaging vulnerable groups such as children and indigenous communities. Exploring Environmental Triggers And Viral Associations In A Case Of Severe Bullous Pemphigoid, Alexandra Lawlor, Rachel Alef, Khaled Deeb

Student Publications

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune disease characterized by pruritic blisters and plaques, primarily affecting elderly individuals. The etiology of BP is multifactorial, with several documented triggers, the extent of which is currently unknown. This case reviews currently documented BP triggers and presents a case of severe and refractory BP, whose onset and progression raise suspicion for indoor pollutants and viral infection as inciting triggers. Our patient's condition worsened despite standard therapy, highlighting the complexity of BP management. This case adds to the literature, teasing out BP pathogenesis and highlighting the complicated hospital treatment course for severe autoimmune blistering diseases.

New Performance Measurement Framework For Realizing Patient-Centered Clinical Decision Support: Qualitative Development Study, Prashila Dullabh, Courtney Zott, Nicole Gauthreaux, James Swiger, Edwin Lomotan, Dean F Sittig

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Patient-centered clinical decision support (PC CDS) exists on a continuum that reflects the degree to which its knowledge base, data, delivery, and use focus on patient needs and experiences. A new focus on value-based, whole-person care has resulted in broader development of PC CDS technologies, yet there is limited information on how to measure their performance and effectiveness. To address these gaps, there is a need for more measurement guidance to assess PC CDS interventions.

Objective: This paper presents a new framework that incorporates patient-centered principles into traditional health IT and clinical decision support (CDS) evaluation frameworks to create …

A Lesson Featuring The French Pronoun On That Teaches Us About Imperceptibility, Ngọc Hải Nguyễn '26

Previously Language Studies Research Symposium

The French pronoun « on » presents a unique political case study. According to the French Academy, the pronoun, though limited to the subject position of a sentence, has potential usage to refer to any person or group of people. In everyday usage, the pronoun simply replace the French 'we' equivalent (nous). However, on does not limit itself to just the aforementioned use—instead, it can (and has been) used to replace any personal pronouns (I-je, you-tu, you-vous, il-he/it, elle-she/it, ils/elles–they [gendered accordingly]), and even certain undefined/indefinite ones (like someone, anyone, one, etc.). On is a good discussion point about the …
