Analysis Model For Transnational Organized Crime In Latin America And Effective Solutions, Connor Barral May 2025

Analysis Model For Transnational Organized Crime In Latin America And Effective Solutions, Connor Barral

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

This thesis argues that the most effective policy approaches for remedying transnational organized criminal activity require international, state, and local dimensions. I conduct a comparative case study of El Salvador and Mexico that highlights the successes of Nayib Bukele’s severe crackdown and preventative methods in El Salvador and the specific inadequacies of Claudia Sheinbaum and Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s negotiation and cooperation strategies in Mexico. In both cases, the ‘war on drugs’ pushed for by the United States limited effectiveness on the international level and inhibited the formation of effective multilateral agreements. But the progress made on the local and …

Joshi, Joe Louis, Glenn Studebaker, Rupesh Kariyat

Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner;Hemiptera: Aphididae), sugarcane aphid (SCA), is an invasive phloem-feeder found worldwide with a wide host range of economically important plants including sorghum and sugarcane. Given its high reproductive capacity and ability to rapidly spread over long distances, SCA presents challenges for effective control, leading to substantial economic losses. Recent studies have identified two multiloci SCA genotypes specialized in feeding on sugarcane (MLL-D) and sorghum (MLL-F) in the USA, which raises concerns as the USA is the second largest sorghum-producing country. This has encouraged research towards identifying these two biotypes where some research has stated them as two species; …

Patient-centered outcomes, including patient-reported outcomes (PROs), are increasingly important in healthcare and research, though their use in rare diseases remains limited. In disorders with significant phenotypic variation, selecting appropriate outcome measures is crucial to ensuring the relevance of clinical trials for the patient population. Phosphomannomutase 2-CDG (PMM2-CDG) involves a complex genotype-phenotype relationship, making it challenging to predict clinical outcomes and select reliable measures for clinical trials. Caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the PMM2, PMM2-CDG displays highly variable clinical severity, underscoring the need for personalized outcome measures. One such so far unexplored, individualized approach is Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS), which …

Revascularization plays a critical role in the successful engraftment of transplanted pancreatic islets, which are inherently rich in capillaries to meet their high metabolic demands. Innovative islet encapsulation strategies such as the NICHE (neovascularized implantable cell homing and encapsulation), generate a prevascularized transplantation site that allows for direct integration of the graft with the systemic circulation. Timing the transplantation is key to maximizing islet engraftment and survival, especially in diabetic individuals, who exhibit impaired wound healing. Therefore, in this study, we explored different methods to assess vascular development within NICHE in vivo in a non-invasive fashion. We effectively tracked neoangiogenesis …

Interactions between the gut microbiome and bile acids are complex and are linked to outcomes in pediatric liver disease by mechanisms that are incompletely understood. In adults, primary bile acids are synthesized in the liver and secreted into the intestine, where complex communities of gut microbes deconjugate, oxidize, epimerize, and 7α-dehydroxylate bile acids into a diverse array of unconjugated, secondary, allo-, iso-, and oxo-bile acids. In contrast, the infant gut microbiota contains a simple, Bifidobacterium-dominant community that transitions to a more diverse, adult-like community as additional microbes colonize the gut. This microbial succession gradually confers deconjugation, oxidation, epimerization, and 7α-dehydroxylation …
