The Switch: Determinants Of Family School Modality Choices During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Steicy Dorfi Lopez
The Switch: Determinants Of Family School Modality Choices During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Steicy Dorfi Lopez
Economics Undergraduate Honors Theses
The K-12 system in the United States experienced substantial challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to give an overview of public, private, and homeschooling enrollment decisions during the pandemic, the changes families made between types of schooling and identify familial characteristics associated with the probability of switching in and out of public education. Knowing more about the groups exiting and returning to the public school system can help public school districts better tailor policies to attract and retain their students. Socioeconomic factors influencing a change could be signs of increasing segregation. Using a discrete choice duration model, a …

Here Be Dragons: The Barriers Of Korean American Female Leaders In Secondary Schools, Joyce A. Kim
Dissertations
In K-12 public schools, there is a shortage of Korean American women in school leadership roles at the secondary level. This phenomenological study explores the contributing factors to this lack of representation, how institutions can recruit and retain Korean American female leaders, and how school systems can better support them. This study examines the leadership experiences of eight Korean American women. It utilizes the socio-political contexts of Korean patriarchy, the Model Minority Myth, and mentorship to help frame the problem of existing barriers. This study explores the following questions: What factors hinder Korean American women in school leadership? What structural …

Exploring User Sentiment On Social Issues Via Neural Network Transfer Learning In Digital Communities, Ananya R. Vangoor
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Understanding public sentiment on social issues is crucial for gauging the stance of the general population. Traditionally, surveys have been a common approach for this. However, to capture more candid opinions, social media provides a rich source of unadulterated opinions. By analyzing social media statements, we can gain insights into the perspectives of specific groups. More specifically, we will investigate the attitudes of the public into the relationship between hard work and success in the workplace.
Using a neural network trained on tweets from X, formerly known as Twitter, we can categorize each tweet as either pro-luck or pro-meritocracy. But …

Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Real Fluid Thermodynamics Nonlinearities On Turbulent Mixing In Supercritical Fluids, Roshid, S M Al Mamun
Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Real Fluid Thermodynamics Nonlinearities On Turbulent Mixing In Supercritical Fluids, Roshid, S M Al Mamun
All Theses
The impact of thermodynamic nonlinearities on flow properties and turbulence was the focus of this study, which investigated the spatial and temporal dynamics of supercritical CO₂ turbulent mixing layers. Beyond their critical point, where parameters such as density, pressure, temperature, isothermal compressibility, and thermal expansion show significant gradients and fluctuations, supercritical fluids deviate sharply from ideal gas behavior. These nonlinearities have a major effect on turbulence and cause complex mixing behavior that has important ramifications for the machines that operate in supercritical environments.
The study explored the effects of local variations of important thermodynamic variables on the fluid dynamics in …

Insight And Illumination In Mathematical Learning: Exemplars Of Transitions To Understanding In The Classroom From Elementary To Graduate School, David Klanderman, Sarah Klanderman, James Turner
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Jacques Hadamard describes a four-stage epistemological process: preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification. Hadamard developed this scheme based upon Henri Poincaré’s reflections on the process that led to his discovery of Fuchsian functions (i.e., automorphic functions) which he described in his wonderful paper La Genese de la Creation Mathematique (Mathematical Discovery in English). Philosopher and theologian Bernard Lonergan builds on the writings of Aquinas to develop his theory of insight which elaborates the transition from incubation to illumination. Insight and illumination provide an analytical lens for transitional moments as students learn ever more abstract mathematical concepts. We offer exemplars of these …
All The President's Men: Congressional Appointment Restrictions At The Founding, Nicholas Holmes, Eric Walker
All The President's Men: Congressional Appointment Restrictions At The Founding, Nicholas Holmes, Eric Walker
Michigan Law Review
The appointment power is exercised through a unique unicameral process. The Founders emphasized its distinctiveness from our system’s general bicameral legislative process, yet the power has largely been overlooked by scholars and jurists. This Note reveals that appointment discretion is the crucial, but understudied, flipside of the removal-power coin and is essential for presidential administration. Constitutional text, structure, and history indicate that there is a line beyond which congressional restrictions on who is eligible to hold federal office exceed Congress’s delegated powers and infringe on the president’s nomination and appointment power under Article II. The conventional wisdom on this line, …
The Imposition Of Constitutional Rights, Alvin Padilla-Babilonia
The Imposition Of Constitutional Rights, Alvin Padilla-Babilonia
Michigan Law Review
One of the central principles of constitutionalism is that citizenship stands for equal rights under the law. According to this ideal, a U.S. citizen living in Puerto Rico or Guam should have the same constitutional rights as a citizen living on the mainland. However, throughout U.S. history, constitutional rights have been neither uniform nor centralized. While constitutional rights held importance, they coexisted with ideals of democratic self-governance and legal pluralism. Today, Supreme Court justices and legal scholars argue that all constitutional rights should apply in the territories. This view upholds citizenship, equal rights, and the rule of law. But the …
A World Without Prison: The Role Of Policy In Prison Abolition, Kristen Davis
A World Without Prison: The Role Of Policy In Prison Abolition, Kristen Davis
Honors Theses
As concerns about mass incarceration persist, prison abolition offers an innovative approach to safety and justice. The prison abolition movement has been active in the United States since the 1970s. Despite increasingly critical attitudes of the prison system, prison abolition is yet to be accepted in mainstream policy making. Instead, policymakers focus on reform, which problematically legitimizes and reinforces locking people away as criminals. One reason why reform takes precedent may be that prison abolition is often understood in negative terms, as a movement that only advocates ending incarceration. However, its essence is better captured in positive terms, such as …

To gain a better understanding of court interpretation in Mississippi, I interviewed ten Spanish language court interpreters and two court clerks either working in Mississippi courts or courts in similar southern states. Responses highlighted two themes as strengths: the federal court interpreter test and compensation, four themes as weaknesses: compensation, standards, omissions, and dialects, and four themes …
Hashtags, Handcuffs, And Hush Money: Inequitable Application Of The Fourth Amendment In Electronic Surveillance, Karina Devi Etminani
Hashtags, Handcuffs, And Hush Money: Inequitable Application Of The Fourth Amendment In Electronic Surveillance, Karina Devi Etminani
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
A wealthy executive buries misconduct behind corporate nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) and encrypted devices. Nearby, police wield geofence warrants to sweep the digital footprints of peaceful protesters demanding racial justice. Both scenarios hinge on the same Fourth Amendment but reveal a coin with two faces. For powerful abusers, privacy protections can conceal assault, intimidation, and corruption. For Black activists, rapidly emerging surveillance tools—including biometric scanners, phone “pings,” and social media mining—intensify a long legacy of racially targeted policing. As Jeannie Suk Gersen notes, two recent social movements– #MeToo and Black Lives Matter–reveal that “too much deference to privacy serves male entitlement, …

Influence Of The Solicitors General On The Supreme Court: 2011-2023, Maxwell Tobin
Influence Of The Solicitors General On The Supreme Court: 2011-2023, Maxwell Tobin
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
This project looks at the success rate of the OSG and how the data indicates that the government-more specifically between the executive and judicial- is not getting along. In doing so, this scholarship uses 337 Supreme Court cases where the OSG filed on these cases as an amicus brief. This project aims to fill the research gap since 2014. I argue the salience of this research is in 2020-2022 where SCOTUS has 3 new conservative members and the President during this time was leaning more progressive (even more than Obama). All of this works to explain the low success rate …
The Effect Of Calorie Restriction On Humoral Responses Towards The Influenza Vaccine, Grayson Kobluk
The Effect Of Calorie Restriction On Humoral Responses Towards The Influenza Vaccine, Grayson Kobluk
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Calorie restriction (CR) - a reduction in caloric intake without malnutrition - has been widely studied for its impact on lifespan and the onset of age-related diseases. Emerging research indicates that CR also influences immune function, though its effects can vary depending on the degree of restriction, duration, and individual characteristics. This study examined how CR effects vaccine-specific antibody responses following influenza vaccination. Male and female mice were maintained on either a control diet or a calorie-restricted diet and vaccinated with an inactivated influenza virus vaccine. Antibody titers were measured 28 days post-vaccination to evaluate the magnitude of the humoral …

Under The Eyes Of The Oppressors: Exploring The Spatial Oppression Of African Nova Scotians, Lorenze L. Cromwell
Under The Eyes Of The Oppressors: Exploring The Spatial Oppression Of African Nova Scotians, Lorenze L. Cromwell
Dalhousie Law Journal
Spatialization is a theoretical understanding of how space is used to enforce and replicate hierarchical power structures. Nova Scotia has used spatialized processes, such as enslavement, segregation, and panoptical power, to subjugate, oppress, and control African Nova Scotians for over 400 years. These practices of spatialization have been established and perpetuated by the law and legal mechanisms, creating a complex spatialized system of oppression against African Nova Scotians. This article defines spatialization, explores the historical and contemporary uses of spatialization, and analyzes the actuarial and symbolic effects created by spatialization. The author concludes by proposing remedial and reparative action that …
