The Primary Care Brief Intervention Competency Assessment Tool (Bi-Cat): Examining Reliability And Validity, Arielle Guillod
The Primary Care Brief Intervention Competency Assessment Tool (Bi-Cat): Examining Reliability And Validity, Arielle Guillod
Dissertations
Within primary care, the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model integrates behavioral health services into medical settings through brief, population‑based interventions delivered by behavioral health consultants (BHCs). Although effective performance in this role requires competencies distinct from traditional mental health practice, few psychometrically sound tools exist to assess clinical skills in primary care. The Brief Intervention Competency Assessment Tool (BICAT) is commonly used for this purpose but lacks published evidence supporting its reliability and validity. This dissertation examined the psychometric properties of the BICAT across two studies. Study 1 evaluated factor structure, internal consistency, and construct validity in a heterogeneous …

Optimized Immunoprecipitation Identifies Candidate Proteins Associated With Eyespot Protein Eye2 In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii , Esra Öztürk, Telsa Mittelmeier, Carol Dieckmann, Atakan Sukatar
Turkish Journal of Botany
The EYE2 protein is essential for eyespot assembly and localization in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying its function remain poorly understood. In this study, we present a systematic evaluation and optimization of an immunoprecipitation (IP)-based workflow for isolating EYE2 and its associated protein complexes. Key methodological variables including strain selection, flagella removal, and detergent concentration were compared using western blotting to determine optimal extraction conditions. The combination of the cell wall-deficient cw15 strain, 4% digitonin extraction, and pH shock-mediated deflagellation significantly enhanced IP specificity and reproducibility. Using this optimized protocol, EYE2 and its potential interaction partners were isolated …

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are becoming one of the most pressing problems worldwide and are becoming difficult to treat; therefore, nanotechnology is a promising alternative technology. The current study aimed to biosynthesize chitosan Saccharomyces cerevisiae nanoparticles (ScNPs) and evaluate their antibacterial activity against hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (HvKp). Five K. pneumoniae isolates from different clinical sources were screened for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production and virulence tests. ScNPs were synthesized and characterized. The antibacterial activity of ScE and ScNPs was determined. The result showed that five bacterial isolates were confirmed as K. pneumoniae and displayed highly virulent and resistant capabilities, hence classifying them …

Beyond Sticky Floors: Executive Gender Diversity And Firm-Level Gender Pay Inequality In Uk Firms, Yasser Eliwa, Sally Ahmed, Ahmed Saleh
All Works
This study examines whether executive gender diversity is associated with gender pay inequality in UK firms. Although prior research has extensively examined board diversity, less is known about whether gender diversity within executive leadership teams is linked to differences in pay inequality across firms. Using a panel of FTSE 350 non-financial firms from 2017 to 2023 and mandatory UK gender pay gap disclosures, we estimate regression models to examine the relationship between the proportion of female executives and the gender pay gap. The findings show that greater executive gender diversity is significantly associated with lower gender pay inequality. In contrast, …

Water-Driven Reactivation Of Photosystem Ii In Plagiochasma Appendiculatum, Vineet Soni, Upma Bhatt, Yashwant Sompura
Turkish Journal of Botany
Plagiochasma appendiculatum, a desiccation-tolerant liverwort, offers a unique system for unraveling the biophysical dynamics of photosynthetic recovery upon rehydration. This study employed high-resolution chlorophyll a fluorescence (ChlF) kinetics to clarify the sequential reactivation of photosystem II (PSII) during the desiccation-to-rehydration transition. Upon desiccation, the OJIP transient collapsed into a linear trace, indicating complete photochemical arrest and inactivation of PSII reaction centers (RCs). Rehydration triggered a biphasic recovery, including an initial rapid phase (0–30 min) marked by sharp increases in F0 and Fm , indicative of PSII–LHCII supercomplex reassembly and thylakoid membrane restoration, followed by a stabilization phase (30–125 min) wherein …

Groundwater-obligate taxa (stygobionts) exhibit variable degrees of habitat specialization, ranging from those restricted to single micro-habitats to generalists occurring in a broad range of habitat types. The karstic Edwards Aquifer is the most biodiverse and well-studied groundwater habitat in the continental United States, but some Edwards Aquifer-associated species also occupy the hyporheic zone of rivers downstream from karst. The goals of this research were to 1) assess the potential of the off-karst hyporheic zone as habitat for ‘karst’ species and 2) to determine how stygobiont richness, diversity, and abundance related to distance from karst in the hyporheic zone of a …

All Decisions
Court granted tenant's motion for a discretionary stay of the proceeding pending appeal under CPLR 5519(c), allowing tenant to challenge a prior decision denying summary judgment on her rent overcharge and fraudulent deregulation counterclaims. Court found minimal prejudice to landlord because the underlying nonpayment petition had already been dismissed, while potential prejudice to tenant from proceeding without resolution of the appeal was manifest.

Background and Objectives: Vamorolone demonstrated similar efficacy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) compared with prednisone in a 24-week exploratory analysis and may reduce key side effects compared with classic corticosteroids. In this study, we compare the efficacy and anthropometric effect of vamorolone 6 mg/kg/d with prednisone 0.75 mg/kg/d and deflazacort 0.9 mg/kg/d in steroid-naïve boys aged 4 to < 7 years using data from 2 trials. Methods: VISION-DMD was a phase 2b, 48-week randomized, double-blind trial assessing vamorolone 2 and 6 mg/kg/d vs placebo and prednisone 0.75 mg/kg/d to 24 weeks. Finding the Optimum Steroid Regimen for DMD (FOR-DMD) was a double-blind, parallel-group randomized trial comparing daily prednisone 0.75 mg/kg/d, daily deflazacort 0.9 mg/kg/d, and intermittent prednisone 0.75 mg/kg (10/10 days on/off). Entropy balancing generated weighted data for mixed model for repeated measures analyses that compared VISION-DMD vamorolone 6 mg/kg/d efficacy and anthropometric outcomes with FOR-DMD prednisone and deflazacort outcomes at 6 and 12 months. Inclusion criteria were boys with genetically confirmed DMD, age 4 to < 7 years, ambulatory, and able to complete a time-to-stand (TTSTAND) assessment in < 10 seconds at baseline. Results: All interventions showed motor improvements relative to baseline at 6 and 12 months. Using the weighted cohorts and at 12 months, vamorolone 6 mg/kg/d (n = 28) had similar changes in TTSTAND velocity, the primary motor endpoint component in both trials, vs daily prednisone (n = 50) or deflazacort (n = 55; mean baseline age 5.42 years all groups), but with CIs overlapping minimal clinically important thresholds of 0.023 rises per second (TTSTAND velocity least squares mean [LSM] difference [95% CI]: vamorolone 6 mg/kg/d vs prednisone 0.75 mg/kg/d, 0.004 rises per second [−0.025 to 0.032] and vs deflazacort 0.9 mg/kg/d, 0.001 rises per second [−0.027 to 0.028]). Body mass index (BMI) Z-scores increased in all groups, greatest with vamorolone (12-month LSM difference [95% CI]: vamorolone vs prednisone 0.57 [0.24–0.90]; vamorolone vs deflazacort 0.29 [0.03–0.56]), whereas growth slowdown occurred in prednisone- and deflazacort-treated boys but not vamorolone (12-month LSM difference in height Z-scores [95% CI]: vamorolone vs prednisone 0.57 [0.24–0.90]; vamorolone vs deflazacort 0.72 [0.53–0.91]). Discussion: Vamorolone demonstrated numerically similar TTSTAND velocity changes to prednisone and deflazacort at 1 year; however, interpretations of differences are limited by 95% CIs crossing minimally important difference thresholds. Further evidence of the growth-protective effect of vamorolone was observed; however, all treatments increased BMI. Vamorolone provides a linear growth-protective classic corticosteroid alternative.
Swindeitvit: A Soft Voting Vision Transformer Ensemble For Accurate And Explainable Solar Panel Fault Detection, Mahe Zabin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Solar panels are becoming very essential in providing sustainable energy but they are usually affected by defects on the surface like dust, snow, bird droppings, physical damages and electrical faults which interfere with their performance. These faults must be identified accurately and in a timely manner to enhance energy efficiency, lower the maintenance cost, and supplement the traditional manual methods of inspection which are labor-intensive, time-consuming and subject to human errors in judgment. The most common methods, such as traditional CNNs and hybrid architectures tend to be less accurate, less explainable and cannot be properly evaluated to be deployed in …

Cystinosis is a rare lysosomal storage disorder that affects approximately 1 in 100,000 to 200,000 live births worldwide. Long-term graft success in cystinosis depends on cysteamine adherence and structured multidisciplinary transition, supported by protocols developed by both pediatric nephrologists and hospital organizations. This review explores institutional and regional care models, structured programs such as the RISE protocol and Got Transition's Six Core Elements, and major barriers including adult nephrology expertise, psychosocial stressors, and insurance coverage gaps. Additionally, we explore the impact of digital health tools for their role in supporting cysteamine adherence and maintaining continuity of care. Emerging technologies such …

INTRODUCTION: Physicians’ use of their judgment and expertise to prescribe drugs and devices for purposes other than those approved by the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”)—colloquially known as off-label use—is an indispensable feature of modern medicine. The FDA approves drugs as “safe and effective for specific indications.” Christopher M. Wittich, Christopher M. Burkle & William L. Lanier, Ten Common Questions (and Their Answers) About OffLabel Drug Use, 87 Mayo Clinic Procs. 982, 982 (2012). Federal law then generally leaves prescribing decisions, including off-label use of FDA-approved drugs and devices for a patient’s particular indication, to physicians acting under state law …

Consumer Welfare And Privatization In Mixed Markets: A Developing Country Perspective, Priyanka Dutta
Consumer Welfare And Privatization In Mixed Markets: A Developing Country Perspective, Priyanka Dutta
Doctoral Theses
This thesis is presented in four chapters, each examining a distinct aspect of mixed market structures, with a consistent focus on consumer surplus as the primary metric for evaluating the desirability of privatization or private provision in the context of developing countries. The first chapter introduces a symmetric Cournot oligopoly model in which both public and private firms produce a homogeneous good and compete in quantities. We find that consumer surplus is maximized at the two extremes: when the market consists solely of public firms or solely of private firms. In contrast, mixed regimes consistently yield intermediate outcomes, never achieving …

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare malignancy marked by clonal proliferation of Langerhans cells, with BRAF V600E mutations identified in over 50% of the cases. BRAF inhibitors (BRAFi), such as dabrafenib, have shown efficacy in treating BRAF V600E-mutant LCH. However, BRAFi therapy is associated with cutaneous adverse effects, including the development of new melanocytic nevi, verrucae, and keratinocyte carcinoma (KC). This case report describes a 78-year-old woman with BRAF V600E-mutant LCH who developed multiple dermatologic side effects following dabrafenib salvage therapy. Seven weeks into treatment, the patient presented with eruptive palmoplantar nevi, verrucae, and a basal cell carcinoma (BCC). …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Since the 1980s, rare earth elements (REE), particularly gadolinium (Gd) used in gadolinium-based contrast agents (GdCA), have revolutionized Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) diagnostics. However, the near-complete persistence of these compounds through wastewater treatment processes has led to widespread global environmental contamination. Here, we present a global assessment of REE concentrations and GdCA signatures in tap water from 148 cities across 89 countries and Antarctica, where anthropogenic Gd ranges from 0.1 to 61.2 ng L–1 and accounts for up to 99% of total dissolved Gd. Contamination hotspots are concentrated in Europe and North America. While Gd levels scale with MRI usage …

Due to the ineffectiveness, side effects, and high cost of conventional drugs, medicinal plants grabbed the attention to treat diabetes, which has been a global health concern nowadays. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the antidiabetic potentialities of bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) fruits in in vivo, in vitro, and in silico methods. For the in vivo assessment, alloxan-induced diabetic rats were fed food mixed with bottle gourd powder for 21 days. For the in vitro assessment, the alpha-amylase inhibitory assay was used to determine the antidiabetic properties of an ethanolic extract of L. siceraria. For the …

Regular consumption of excess sugar is linked to nutrition-based diseases, including gut problems, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Increasing sweetness perception is a novel technique to decrease sugar consumption. This experiment compared the sweetness perception of sweetened and unsweetened almond milk in response to different virtual environments with music and visuals. Two music types, the classical song Goldberg Variations, BMV. 998-Variation 13 and a jazz song generated by AI were used. Additionally, fall and spring forest backgrounds were generated by the Blockade Labs 3D image generator. Each participant tasted sweetened and unsweetened almond milk in music-only, …

Background: Research data services (RDS) have expanded in academic libraries but can be challenging to develop, particularly in teaching-intensive and less-resourced institutions. Learning communities offer a promising model for building skills, fostering collaboration, and aligning services with local needs. Case Presentation: This case report describes the development and implementation of three learning communities—a library group, a faculty group, and a student group—at a teaching-focused institution. These communities brought together library professionals, faculty, and students from diverse disciplines—including health sciences, education, data science, and engineering—to collaboratively explore the All of Us dataset. By working with the same dataset, participants were able …

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used to generate health information, yet their reliability as evaluators remains unclear. This study investigated the feasibility of an LLM-as-a-judge methodology in the context of infection prevention and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), comparing automated ratings with human expert benchmarks.
METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of an expert-annotated dataset of health messages. Three leading LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) independently evaluated the same messages using an adapted DISCERN tool across five domains: information reliability, quality, AMR impact, persuasiveness, and overall score. We utilized descriptive statistics, intra-rater reliability tests, and mixed-effects ordinal regression to analyze divergence …

Alelia Murphy was the oldest living person in the United States, turning 114 in July 2019 until her death in November 2019. She and her family credit her longevity to her faith in God. This premise is explored through her words as she stated she had not seen everyone she needed to see and compared that statement to Simeon from the Bible who did not die until he saw the Messiah. Alelia Murphy also had not seen everything. She was seeing the relative success of her much admired, former President Barack Obama, and she had just met me, her great …

Purpose. Men maintain the ability to exercise authority and gain a competitive edge in leadership positions, while women persistently endure adversity within the patriarchal system, deeply rooted in their religious beliefs and path of faith. This study explores how women’s faith influences their pursuit of leadership positions and whether their upbringing, especially from a patriarchal perspective, deters them from having leadership aspirations. Methods. We used a qualitative method to understand the lived experiences of women in leadership positions and how faith influenced their leadership ascension. We conducted semi-structured interviews with thirty-four (N = 34) female leaders in top …
