Femme Fatale: Explaining The Tactical Deployment Of Female Operatives By Terrorist Organizations, Katharine Burrage Russell May 2025

Femme Fatale: Explaining The Tactical Deployment Of Female Operatives By Terrorist Organizations, Katharine Burrage Russell

Dissertations - ALL

What explains variation in women’s participation in terrorist organization? Why do some terrorist organizations deploy women in violent, operative roles, whereas other terrorist organizations only deploy men as operatives? Why do some terrorist organizations begin a conflict with only male operatives but later begin to recruit, train, and deploy female operatives? Previous literature examining the deployment of women by terrorist organizations has been largely divided into those who examine the radicalization process of potential recruits (the “supply” side of the equation) or the reasons why an organization seeks to recruit women as potential operatives (the “demand” side). Scholarship examining the …

Essays On Corporate Governance And Behavioral Strategy, Yi Huang May 2025

Essays On Corporate Governance And Behavioral Strategy, Yi Huang

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation bridges the corporate governance research and behavioral strategy research to examine how the interplay between governance mechanisms and managerial cognition and behavior shapes firm strategy and performance. The dissertation consists of three empirical essays. The first essay examines whether the greater monitoring intensity and informational advantages of concentrated institutional ownership curb CEO overconfidence. By situating CEO overconfidence within an agency context, this study highlights the importance of concentrated institutional ownership for curtailing CEO overconfidence and sheds light on the multiple channels through which these owners monitor. The second essay uses the behavioral theory of the firm and agency …

Behavioral Self-Regulation In Context: Timing, Types, And Changes Of Material Hardship Across Childhood, Qingyang Liu May 2025

Behavioral Self-Regulation In Context: Timing, Types, And Changes Of Material Hardship Across Childhood, Qingyang Liu

Dissertations - ALL

Behavioral self-regulation in childhood lays the foundation for lifelong adaptive functioning, including academic achievement, social relationships, and psychological well-being. While early poverty is consistently linked to worse behavioral self-regulation, less is known about how the timing, types, and changes in material hardship (i.e., daily experiences of deprivation), shape children’s development of behavioral self-regulation. This dissertation addresses these literature gaps through three interconnected studies that examine the dynamic association between material hardship and behavioral self-regulation across childhood, including (1) how early exposure to distinct patterns of material hardship in infancy shapes children’s behavioral self-regulation developmental trajectory from early to middle childhood; …

The Deterrence Dilemma: Is It Time For Canada To Abandon General Deterrence As A Sentencing Objective?, Caitlin Salvino May 2025

The Deterrence Dilemma: Is It Time For Canada To Abandon General Deterrence As A Sentencing Objective?, Caitlin Salvino

Dalhousie Law Journal

When Canada first codified its sentencing framework in the Criminal Code, Parliament included deterrence as a sentencing objective. The sentencing objective of deterrence encompasses two aspects: specific deterrence for the individual offender and general deterrence for other potential offenders. I engage with the concept of general deterrence and its incorporation into Canadian sentencing law throughout this article. I argue that Parliament should abandon general deterrence as a sentencing objective under the Criminal Code. After reviewing the jurisprudence on general deterrence and conducting a systematic review of its current application in Ontario sentencing decisions, I argue that general deterrence should be …

Geography In Service To The Community, Albert Redsun May 2025

Geography In Service To The Community, Albert Redsun

The Geographical Bulletin

For many years geographers spent much of their professional efforts describing the landscape and man's activities. These were noteworthy, necessary, and valuable contributions. As we grew (just as all disciplines do) we searched for those meaningful relationships of man and land. We still search. Many relationships are obvious. Many that will be discovered in the future will someday be obvious. It is clear that we will need the continuing quest by researchers in our field. Researchers now seek to predict. The introduction of quantification techniques has allowed for more refined analysis and prediction. As researchers open more and more doors …

Reminiscences, Winston Burton Jr

The Geographical Bulletin

Perhaps no other job affords the opportunity to influence the lives and minds of the younger generation than does teaching. As students reminisce, nearly everyone will recall a favorite professor and cite examples or instances in which his life was in some way influenced by his teachings or advice. In student circles at North Carolina Central University, the name of Dr. Theodore H. Speigner has often been brought up in this regard. Dr. Speigner has earned the distinction of being a great educator throughout the entire state of North Carolina as well as on the North Carolina Central University Campus. …

Land Use Bordering The Calumet River And Lake Calumet In Chicago, Illinois, William D. Curran

The Geographical Bulletin

The Calumet River-Lake Calumet area within the City of Chicago, Illinois comprises a complexity of manufacturing, transportation, service, and storage facilities at a magnitude rarely found other than in coastal port locations. The area contains a major portion of the Calumet district's heavy basic industries and constitutes the principal port area of metropolitan Chicago. The historical developments of the industrial and port activities in the area have been ably chronicled by Mayer' and Appleton' and do not bear repeating here. The objectives of this paper are to provide a detailed description and evaluation of the forty-nine sites bordering on the …

On The Perils Of Perceiving Perception, James E. Landing May 2025

On The Perils Of Perceiving Perception, James E. Landing

The Geographical Bulletin

The emergence of man's perception of his environment within the discipline of geography as a suitable topic of pursuit is a most wholesome development. The recently articulated views of Saarinen through the publications of the Commission on College Geography provide an admirable springboard for those interested in pursuing the topic and obtaining an overview of what has already been pursued.' But geography teachers have, for years, been intuitively doing the same thing by discovering through their classroom contacts the correct and incorrect perceptions of students and teaching concepts based upon this knowledge. Although few of these have been conducted as …

Water Sourcesst. Thomas And St. John,American Virgin Islands, Ann Lundelius May 2025

Water Sourcesst. Thomas And St. John,American Virgin Islands, Ann Lundelius

The Geographical Bulletin

The vital word in Saint Thomas and Saint John is water. Because of the lack of it in the past, the population remained low. With new desa linization techniques, the islands can support both a greater local as well as tourist population. The basic problem stems from the fact that the islands are volcanic in structure (Figure one) without water storage pockets. Also, there are no fresh water rivers. The populace has had to depend on a cistern method of gathering rainwater, but this method was only fairly dependable as sometimes it rains for days straight, and other times it …

Guatemala And Thehomogenizing Globe:A Vignette Ontechnological Progress, Bruce E. Bechto

The Geographical Bulletin

Today revolutionary deeds and ideas are affecting much of the world. Hence changes come to existing cultures and ways of li fe, transformations of special consequence because they also bring fundamental modifications in man's relationship to his environment. Assuming these trends are inevitable, current mosaics of land and life are destined to yield to new forces. And, just possibly, the most dramatic chapters of man ' s d evelopment are presently being recorded with the revolutionary modification of more traditional societies. What man does with the land he occupies largely depends on his cultural view of its use. l Human …

My Reminiscencesconcerned Withamerican Geography(, Eugene Van Cleef

The Geographical Bulletin

When it was suggested I reminisce about American geography I was delighted to grasp the opportunity, for nothing pleases the ego more of one who has lived a long time than to discourse upon the events of his youth. The situation is especially gratifying when one ca n cast his words of wisdom upon a captive audience. The limitations of time made it seem advisable to record my thoughts. At best an attempt to squeeze into a 25- minute period, a story which covers several decades is not only audacious but probably doomed to failure. I trust you will forgive …

Survey Of Symmetric Encryption Techniques Implemented Over Gpu Platforms, Hawraa Moussa, Ahmed Fanfakh

Journal of Intelligent Informatics, Networking, and Cybersecurity

Encryption is one of the most important techniques used to deliver protection solutions. Symmetric encryption uses a single key for encryption and the decryption process. Symmetric encryption implements block encryption, replacement, and switching. Consequently, it is problematic if the private keys obtained from the protocols are frequent in certain states or exhibit reduced unpredictability. Several researchers applied the cryptography method in a parallel fashion to minimize the time needed to complete encrypting and decrypting data procedures. Numerous viable solutions have been found to increase the levels of encryption algorithm performance made by the researchers to use parallelism to boost their …

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

ABSTRACT

PERCEPTIONS OF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES BY K-5 ALTERNATIVE LICENSURE TEACHERS IN ARKANSAS ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

Brandy Howell

The ongoing teacher shortage in the United States has prompted an increased reliance on alternative licensure pathways to fill vacancies, particularly in elementary education. Alternatively licensed teachers bring diverse experiences and backgrounds to the classroom, but their professional development and integration into school communities remain critical challenges. Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) have emerged as a widely adopted model for teacher collaboration and professional growth; however, little research has explored how alternatively licensed K-5 teachers perceive their participation in these communities. This qualitative phenomenological …

ABSTRACT SCIENCE OF READING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: THE PERCEPTIONS OF SECONDARY TEACHERS IN ARKANSAS

Teresa R. Moka

The study addresses the critical issue of low literacy proficiency among secondary students in Arkansas, where National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data reveals declining reading scores. Despite scientific consensus on reading instruction, many teachers lack professional development in evidence-based reading strategies, particularly at the secondary level. Although Arkansas secondary teachers have received initial Science of Reading (SoR) professional development from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), the perceptions of secondary teachers regarding SoR professional development is not well documented. The purpose …
