I Knew You Were Trouble When You Walked In: The Negative Effects And Shortcomings Of United Nations Peacekeeping Efforts, Andrea G. Heredia-Ortiz
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
The purpose of this paper is to look at peacekeeping operations done by the United Nations. In specific the efforts in Haiti, the former Yugoslavia, and Israel. In each of these operations the United Nations created more instability or left the country in the same or worse state than it was when it came in. In the case of Haiti there was sexual exploitation of the citizens and the cholera outbreak of 2010. In Israel, the peace operation has been ongoing since 1947, conflict in the Middle East does not seem to be coming at an end anytime soon. Additionally, …

Serving Minority Women Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Consuelo Valentina Riso
Serving Minority Women Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Consuelo Valentina Riso
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a widespread public health concern that disproportionately affects women, particularly those belonging to minorities. In the United States, the prevalence of IPV among Latina women is influenced by intersecting factors such as immigration status, socioeconomic stressors, cultural values, and systemic barriers. Research and community initiatives addressing IPV among Latina women have included crisis hotlines, domestic violence shelters, advocacy programs, and bilingual services within community health centers. Research also highlights that culturally tailored services yield better outcomes than trauma-informed approaches alone.
Additionally, online interventions are emerging as promising tools to expand safe, accessible, and bilingual support, …
Decreasing Dermal Filler Adverse Events Using Qsen And Benner Theoretical Frameworks To Assess Competency, Stacey D. Stephens Ross
Decreasing Dermal Filler Adverse Events Using Qsen And Benner Theoretical Frameworks To Assess Competency, Stacey D. Stephens Ross
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Background: Aesthetic nursing is a new branch of nursing practice. Formal nursing education and standards are lacking, making it challenging to assess competency of an aesthetic nurse. Adverse events (AEs) range from minor (bruising) to severe (vascular compromise and blindness) and can be associated with poor technique or lack of knowledge. Standardized practice using evidence-based (EB) protocols is necessary to provide safe, high-quality care. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Joint Commission support the use of the Quality and Safety in Nursing (QSEN) programs to improve outcomes and promote safety. Due to varied training, “experienced” aesthetic nurses may or …

On Sport and Society
It seems that the biggest news in baseball this week is off the field. Usually, that is not a good thing. Yesterday, the Commissioner of Baseball, Rob Manfred, announced that Pete Rose and sixteen other players have been re-instated from baseball’s “permanently ineligible” list. Among the sixteen others are several players caught up in the Black Sox scandal of 1919.

Addressing Workplace Violence Directed At Nurses In An Acute Care Medical Facility Through An Enhanced Multidisciplinary Huddle, Megan E. Loughnane
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Abstract
Background: Healthcare workers are at increased risk of violence directed at them. Approximately three-quarters of all nonfatal injuries and illnesses related to violence were incurred by healthcare workers. Given this, the aim of this project was to decrease the frequency of workplace violence events directed at nurses and increasing the staff nurse’s perception of unit-based safety.
Local Problem: At the large academic medical center where the project was implemented, NDNQI quality data indicated a higher rate of assaults (per 1,000 care hours in a hospital with greater than 500 beds) than the national average (0.12 vs. 0.07 respectively). …

Strumal carcinoid tumors of the ovary are rare neoplasms composed of an intimate mixture of thyroid and carcinoid tissues. Although various theories regarding their histogenesis have been proposed, evidence confirming the origin of the carcinoid component has been lacking. We report a case of a 40-year-old female with an ovarian strumal carcinoid arising in the background of a mature cystic teratoma. Morphological and immunohistochemical findings support the hypothesis that the carcinoid component originates from the thyroid follicular epithelium, undergoing neuroendocrine differentiation. A single-cell growth pattern was also identified, expanding the known histological spectrum of strumal carcinoids. Our case provides additional …

Molecular chaperones play a central role in maintaining protein homeostasis. The highly conserved Hsp70 family of chaperones have major functions in folding of nascent peptides, protein refolding, and protein aggregate disassembly. In yeast, loss of two Hsp70 proteins, Ssa1 and Ssa2, is associated with decreased cellular growth and shortened lifespan. While heterologous or mutant temperature-sensitive proteins form anomalous large cytoplasmic inclusions in ssa1Δssa2Δ strains, it is unclear how endogenous wild-type proteins behave and are regulated in the presence of limiting Hsp70s. Using the wild-type yeast Poly A binding protein (Pab1), which is involved in mRNA binding and forms stress granules …

The Western U.S. is experiencing significant changes in its hydrological dynamics, marked by increased variability and rapid “whiplash” shifts between extreme drought and flood conditions. This study quantified these changes using a customized hydrological water year index, which correlated better with surface water storage in the basins than other drought/wetness indicators. Application of the index revealed heightened hydrological extremes and whiplash events post-2015 in all Western U.S. basins, with nearly 72% of stations facing critically dry conditions in 2021 and over 54% experiencing extreme wet conditions in 2023. Future projections indicate a decline of 8.5%–13.2% in non-extreme water year types …
