Relationship Between Length Of Stay And Unplanned Readmissions For Adolescent Medicaid Beneficiaries In Mental Health, Rhona Rebecca Waugh May 2025

Relationship Between Length Of Stay And Unplanned Readmissions For Adolescent Medicaid Beneficiaries In Mental Health, Rhona Rebecca Waugh

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Using national cross-sectional data sets and explanatory variables from CMS, the purpose of this study was to analyze identified adolescents on Medicaid from 2019 to 2021, to determine the interaction of length of stay (LOS) on the frequency of unplanned 30-day readmissions. Students with mental disorders are the most susceptible population during enrollment in healthcare facilities, which is why LOS and readmissions represent one of the most critical points in supporting these learners. This study established the association between LOS and the increased proportion of 30-day readmissions among consumers under Medicaid with mental health conditions in the adolescence stage. To …

Asian American Pacific Islander Representation In Middle School Social Studies, Erin Dorothy Mccarthy May 2025

Asian American Pacific Islander Representation In Middle School Social Studies, Erin Dorothy Mccarthy

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

According to recent studies, Asian American history has been misrepresented or omitted from the overall narrative of American history in standards, textbooks, and curricula. The problem was that Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) perspectives were missing and underrepresented in the middle school social studies curriculum in Wisconsin. Framed by Ladson-Billings’ culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP), the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore how middle school social studies teachers integrated the voices of AAPI identities into the curriculum. The research questions probed how middle school teachers met state statutes on including multicultural voices and how they included AAPI perspectives …

Cooling The Tropics Sustainably: Evidence From A Choice Experiment On Energy Efficient Air Conditioners In The Philippines, Miwa Nakai, Naonari Yajima, Majah-Leah V. Ravago

Economics Department Faculty Publications

Energy efficiency of home appliances plays a crucial role in climate mitigation policies, especially considering the increasing energy consumption in developing countries. In countries with high temperatures, such as the Philippines, switching to energy efficient air conditioners (ACs) can substantially contribute to climate mitigation. By conducting a choice experiment survey, we investigated the attributes influencing the decision to purchase energy efficient ACs in the Philippines. Utilising primary data with a broad range of socio-economic characteristics, we find that households have a higher willingness-to-pay (WTP) for energy efficient models. Notably, the WTP for higher energy efficiency levels is sufficiently high to …

A Systematic Review Of Brief Cognitive Test Used Among The Veteran Population, Joel Mcpherson May 2025

A Systematic Review Of Brief Cognitive Test Used Among The Veteran Population, Joel Mcpherson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The practice problem this DNP project addressed was the lack of a of consensus for a brief cognitive screening (BCS) tool that can be most predictive of mild cognitive disorder (MCI) and dementia in a Veteran Affairs (VA) outpatient clinic. Addressing this gap in practice is important because the veteran population may be at increased risk of MCI and dementia due to age, a history of traumatic brain injury, and posttraumatic stress disorder. This DNP project was a systematic review of the literature. A population, exposure, outcome (PEO) framework and the reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance (RE-AIM) theory guided …

Spin In The Titles And Abstracts Of Allergy And Immunology Randomized Controlled Trials With Nonsignificant Outcomes, Diana Hamdan, Abbigail Niewchas, Ambrose Loc Ngo, Michael Weaver

Student Publications

In scientific reporting, ‘spin’ refers to presenting neutral or negative outcomes in a manner that infers favorable results. Spin can be especially problematic in the abstracts of randomized control trials, leading to an incorrect interpretation of trial outcomes, and potentially impacting subsequent studies, patient care, and policy decisions. The present study aims to evaluate the presence of spin in the abstracts of registered randomized control trials published in allergy and immunology journals. A systematic search of the PubMed database was performed to identify randomized controlled trials of human subjects registered in a clinical trial registry with a test and control …

Background: Electronic health records (EHRs) are widely used in health care systems across the United States to help clinicians access patient medical histories in one central location. As medical knowledge expands, clinicians are increasingly using evidence-based point-of-care information (POCI) resources to facilitate clinical decision-making in medical practices. While these tools can improve clinical outcomes, few studies have assessed clinicians' opinions on integrating them with EHRs.

Objective: This study aims to assess clinicians' attitudes and the perceived value of POCI resources for finding medication- and disease-related information in clinical practice and their integration with EHRs.

Methods: Semistructured interviews were conducted with …

A Quantum Reservoir Computing Approach To Computer-Aided Music Composition, Eduardo Miranda, Hari Shaji May 2025

A Quantum Reservoir Computing Approach To Computer-Aided Music Composition, Eduardo Miranda, Hari Shaji

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This paper presents an approach to developing computer-aided music composition (CAMC) systems with quantum computing. CAMC systems are aimed at supporting musicians in creating music rather than generating complete pieces of music autonomously. For instance, they may generate ideas or prompts to be further developed during the creative process. We developed a CAMC system using a machine learning method called Quantum Reservoir Computing (QRC) that learns to create tunes in the style of given examples. The system proved to run satisfactorily on the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) machines available today. It does not require large amounts of qubits to outperform …

Scaling Up Eco-Engineering: The Role Of Topographic Complexity And Spatial Variability In Shaping Biodiversity On Coastal Structures, Charlotte Clubley, Antony Knights, Jessica Allen, David T Bilton, Andy Foggo, Mick Hanley, James Murphy, Louisa E Wood, Louise Firth May 2025

Scaling Up Eco-Engineering: The Role Of Topographic Complexity And Spatial Variability In Shaping Biodiversity On Coastal Structures, Charlotte Clubley, Antony Knights, Jessica Allen, David T Bilton, Andy Foggo, Mick Hanley, James Murphy, Louisa E Wood, Louise Firth

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

In response to the depauperate biodiversity often associated with the largely homogenous surfaces of artificial structures, ecological (eco-) engineering has emerged as a tool to introduce topographic complexity to coastal development. Although relatively small-scale studies using topographically complex panels and artificial rockpools are commonplace, determining how the configuration of these interventions works over greater and more realistic spatial scales has received comparatively little attention. Given the importance of spatial variability in habitat complexity for shaping community composition and, therefore, regional diversity, filling this knowledge gap is key to enhancing the ‘design catalogue’ for future eco-engineering installations. Here, we manipulated topographic …

Forecasting Turkish Lira Via Combination Of Ann And Econometrics Approaches -An Emerging Market Case Study, Muhammad Asadullah, Nayab Jumani May 2025

Forecasting Turkish Lira Via Combination Of Ann And Econometrics Approaches -An Emerging Market Case Study, Muhammad Asadullah, Nayab Jumani

Business Review

This study aims to forecast the Turkish Lira to US Dollar exchange rate from January 2011 to December 2024, withholding the 2024 data for forecasting. The study utilizes four econometric models (ARIMA, Naïve, exponential smoothing, and NARDL) along with one Artificial Neural Network model (ANN). It heeds the recommendation of Poon and Granger (2003) to combine these models and assess their predictive accuracy using two methods: equal-weights and variance-covariance. The study finds that the combined model outperforms individual models in predicting the exchange rate. The fusion of ANN and NARDL emerges as particularly effective in forecasting the Turkish Lira's performance. …

Regulation Of Kynureninase By Estrogen Stimulation In Estrogen-Receptor Positive Breast Cancer, Alexis Berger May 2025

Regulation Of Kynureninase By Estrogen Stimulation In Estrogen-Receptor Positive Breast Cancer, Alexis Berger

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of death in women worldwide, with estrogen receptor (ER)-positive subtypes comprising over 70% of cases. Endocrine therapies, such as tamoxifen, are the primary treatment for ER-positive breast cancer; however, resistance inevitably develops, highlighting the need for alternative therapeutic strategies. Growing evidence suggests that the kynurenine pathway plays a significant role in breast cancer progression and metastasis. The kynurenine pathway metabolizes 95% of the amino acid tryptophan, generating metabolites such as kynurenine, kynurenic acid, 3-hydroxykynurenine, and ultimately Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD). To better understand the impact of estrogen signaling on the kynurenine pathway, kynureninase …

Forced Arbitration In The Fortune 500, David Horton May 2025

Forced Arbitration In The Fortune 500, David Horton

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

As the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA) nears its centennial, its most controversial byproduct—forced arbitration—has entered uncharted territory. For years, companies exploited their power over fine print to produce ambitious dispute resolution regimes. This trend reached its apex in the 2010s, when the Supreme Court held that arbitration is incompatible with class actions and gave its blessing to delegation provisions, which allow the arbitrator to decide whether a case must be arbitrated. But around 2020, the dynamic changed. Plaintiffs’ lawyers discovered a tactic called “mass arbitration” that gains settlement leverage by bombarding defendants with scores of individual claims. In addition, Congress …

Building Bridges: Queer Rights In And Out Of The Courts, Kaz Lane May 2025

Building Bridges: Queer Rights In And Out Of The Courts, Kaz Lane

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

It is unclear whether the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment prohibits states from differentiating between people based solely on their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. This note_comment analyzes the Supreme Court’s tiers of scrutiny—rational basis review, intermediate scrutiny, and strict scrutiny—to argue that a new suspect class is warranted for sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI), triggering strict scrutiny for SOGI classifications. This analysis shows that a united SOGI class meets all of the characteristics associated with suspect classes, including a history of anti-LGBTQIA+ discrimination and the irrelevance between SOGI and one’s ability to contribute to society. This …

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

In the United States, entities known as patent trolls purchase patents solely for the purpose of threatening and bringing litigation and present a significant threat to innovation and economic progress. The question is: Who will rise to the occasion and stop them? In the face of federal inaction, state legislatures have stepped in, enacting laws to combat bad faith assertions of patent infringement. This note_comment examines the efficacy and constitutionality of state anti-patent troll statutes, analyzing how they operate within the broader framework of federal patent law. State legislatures have taken various approaches to address patent trolling. Some statutes have …

Suspecting With Data, Mary D. Fan May 2025

Suspecting With Data, Mary D. Fan

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Our pooled consumer big data, such as the pictures we post or the location history and keyword search trails we leave, are generating new ways to solve crimes. Much of the commentary on big data search strategies such as keyword, geofence, and facial recognition searches fixate on Fourth Amendment search and seizure issues rather than evidentiary safeguards. This Article breaks new ground by framing evidentiary guardrails for big data searches to reduce the harms of erroneous arrests, redress secrecy, and counteract the mystique of machine infallibility. Advancing beyond over-reliance on Fourth Amendment doctrine, this Article illuminates how evidence law and …

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) using kilovoltage cone-beam CT (CBCT) has become an indispensable tool to ensure the geometric accuracy of radiotherapy treatment delivery. Although significant technical advances have been made in reducing imaging dose, the repeated imaging procedures can still accumulate significant dose to healthy tissues. Despite the widespread use, we still lack clear guidance for optimisation and widely accepted frameworks for evaluating the quality and suitability of CBCT imaging protocols. To address this gap, the 2022 European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) Physics Workshop focused on image-quality and imaging-dose optimisation for IGRT using CBCT. This publication represents a …

The Next Four Years: Geographical Reflections On The Second Trump Administration, Caroline R. Nagel, Peter Hopkins May 2025

The Next Four Years: Geographical Reflections On The Second Trump Administration, Caroline R. Nagel, Peter Hopkins

Faculty Publications

In this introductory essay, we reflect on the significance of the re-election of Donald Trump to the presidency in the United States, and we provide some context for interpreting Trump's second term. Two of Trump's early policy moves—the release of billions of gallons of water from reservoirs in California and the granting of refugee status to Afrikaners—portend four years of politics based on alternative facts, conspiracy theories, and racial grievances. Trump's political agenda has received a significant boost from Silicon Valley billionaires, who are keen to eliminate regulatory bureaucracy. Paradoxically, while allied with high-tech futurists, Trump's policies hearken to an …

This paper will provide a case study background about a project and effort – the New Jersey Cybersecurity Regional Cluster (NJCRC) - that has contributed significant outreach to New Jersey small businesses to provide free cybersecurity risk assessments to help small businesses prepare …

Racial Disparities In Crime-Based Removal Proceedings, Emily Ryo, Ian Peacock, Weston Ley, Christopher Levesque May 2025

Racial Disparities In Crime-Based Removal Proceedings, Emily Ryo, Ian Peacock, Weston Ley, Christopher Levesque

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Whether and to what extent racial minorities experience harsher treatment or face worse outcomes in court are questions of fundamental importance for any justice system. Questions of racial inequality are especially salient in the context of removal proceedings that are triggered by immigrants’ criminal history. Many individuals in crime-based removal proceedings are immigrants of color who face a host of legal disadvantages that are tantamount to double penalties for the same crime for which they have already been punished through the criminal justice system. This Article offers, for the first time, systematic empirical analyses of crime-based removal proceedings decided between …

Toward A Dynamic View Of Corporate Purpose, Dorothy Lund May 2025

Toward A Dynamic View Of Corporate Purpose, Dorothy Lund

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Scholars debating the corporation’s role in society generally advance the view that there is only one desirable orientation for corporations and their management. Specifically, proponents of a stakeholder governance model contend that focusing management on a broad set of corporate constituents maximizes overall welfare, while advocates of a shareholder-centric directive counter that prioritizing shareholders creates social welfare by rendering the firm most profitable. This Article offers another view: It suggests that the welfare-maximizing purpose for corporations could change depending on external economic conditions, which both of these positions assume away. Specifically, shareholder primacy is likely to promote welfare in a …

Against Attorney General Self-Referral In Immigration Law, Stella Burch Elias, Paul Gowder May 2025

Against Attorney General Self-Referral In Immigration Law, Stella Burch Elias, Paul Gowder

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

This Article advances a rule-of-law-based critique of the Attorney General’s immigration self-referral power. We argue that the Attorney General’s self-referral and review power over pending immigration proceedings allows an appointed Executive Branch official to engage in unchecked and unilateral lawmaking and, therefore, should be abolished. Scholars have typically understood legal stability, prospectivity, and the separation of policymaking from adjudication as requirements of the Anglo-American rule of law regime which protect individual freedom and equality. It is traditionally believed that by limiting policy-driven legislation to prospective, general laws which are enacted through an explicitly legislative process, individuals may be secure against …

Prevention Of And Response To International Crimes Against And Affecting Children, Diane Marie Amann May 2025

Prevention Of And Response To International Crimes Against And Affecting Children, Diane Marie Amann

Scholarly Works

This submission endeavoured to aid the efforts of Parliament’s Standing Group on Atrocity Crimes to promote within the United Kingdom a comprehensive framework regarding international crimes. The submission stressed that prevention is the preferred course: ex ante prevention avoids present harms, inter-generational traumas, and future risks of retaliatory violence, while ex post responses, in the form of criminal proceedings, are likely to be random and selective, not comprehensive. It urged that when harm does occur, responses must aim not only to exact retribution, but also to repair injuries, heal societies, and foster peaceful settlements of disputes. To these ends, the …

Chemotherapeutic resistance is a major obstacle to chemotherapeutic failure. Cancer cell resistance involves several mechanisms, including epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), signaling pathway bypass, drug efflux activation, and impairment of drug entry. P-glycoproteins (P-gp) are an efflux transporter that pumps chemotherapeutic drugs out of cancer cells, resulting in chemotherapeutic resistance. Several types of long noncoding RNA (lncRNAs) have been identified in resistant cancer cells, including ODRUL, MALAT1, and ANRIL. The high expression level of ODRUL is related to the induction of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) gene expression, resulting in the emergence of doxorubicin resistance in osteosarcoma. lncRNAs are observed to be regulators of …

Inflammation is a central hallmark of cardiomyopathy, where misdirected immune responses contribute to chronic myocardial dysfunction. Among the emerging molecular mechanisms implicated in this process, the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)/stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathway has garnered increasing attention. Acting as a key cytosolic DNA sensor, the cGAS/STING pathway orchestrates inflammatory responses triggered by microbial infections or endogenous cellular stressors such as autophagy and apoptosis. Despite its pivotal role, the precise molecular mechanisms regulating this pathway and its role in cardiomyopathy-associated inflammation remain poorly understood and subject to ongoing debate. To address this scientific gap, we first reviewed key …

Does Choice Of Media Amplify Support For Political Violence?, Nathan Palomares

Political Science Student Papers and Posters

Acts of political violence have increased in frequency and exposure to American society via news media. Violent rhetoric is a common theme among many forms of media Americans consume, including social media, which has become an essential platform where Americans increasingly get political news information. The events of the January 6 Capitol Riots and the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump in late 2024 show how urgent the rise of political violence is and its destabilization of American Democracy. In this paper, I examine the relationship between the types of news media people consume and their potential to increase people’s …
