This study distinguishes clinically and theoretically meaningful subgroups of people experiencing homelessness based on their endorsement of personality difficulties, using nationally representative data of the civilian, noninstitutionalized population of the United States, inclusive of those reporting past-year homelessness (N = 704). A bias-adjusted three-step latent class analysis was used to estimate latent class measurement models; classify cases into the optimal class solution; and, using a maximum likelihood method, test the association between demographic and behavioral health covariates with class membership. Results show that the four-class solution was optimal. The largest class (35.44%) had high probability of endorsing each personality …

We have investigated the ability of a MasSpec Pen (MSPen) "three-in-one" (extraction, transfer, and ionization) device coupled to a mass spectrometer to provide instantaneous chemical profiles that could promptly characterize wood samples from the mahogany (Meliaceae) family. For that, we selected a set of five representative wood species, that is, Brazilian mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla, also known as Honduran mahogany), two African mahoganies (Khaya ivorensis and Khaya senegalensis), and two "nongenuine" ("fake") mahogany woods: cedar (Cedrela odorata) and andiroba (Carapa guianensis). By simply touching the superficially polished wood surface and after 3 s of automatic extraction, profiles of highly characteristic markers …

Background: Due to the nature of the job and healthcare climate, emergency medicine physicians are constantly at risk for malpractice claims. Despite this, there is a gap in education around malpractice litigation. Given the considerable number of curricular topics residency programs must cover in conjunction with the volume of clinical hours residents work, we found that there is a need for an educational experience that is thorough yet compact enough to cause minimal disruption for educators and trainees. We created an easily reproducible educational session featuring collaboration between an emergency medicine residency program and a law school that covers medical …

G-Protein Coupled Receptors In Metabolic Reprogramming And Cancer, Songyeon Ahn, Benny Abraham Kaipparettu
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR) are one of the frequently investigated drug targets. GPCRs are involved in many human pathophysiologies that lead to various disease conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, and obesity. GPCR receptor activates multiple signaling pathways depending on the ligand and tissue type. However, this review will be limited to the GPCR-mediated metabolic modulations and the activation of relevant signaling pathways in cancer therapy. Cancer cells often have reprogrammed cell metabolism to support tumor growth and metastatic plasticity. Many aggressive cancer cells maintain a hybrid metabolic status, using both glycolysis and mitochondrial metabolism for better metabolic plasticity. In addition …

A Sumo-Interacting Motif In The Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor Epac1 Is Required For Subcellular Targeting And Function, Wenli Yang, Fang Mei, Wei Lin, Jason E Lee, Si Nie, Christopher J Bley, André Hoelz, Xiaodong Cheng
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
Exchange protein directly activated by cAMP (EPAC1), a multifunctional intracellular cAMP receptor, dynamically localizes to various cellular loci, engaging with diverse molecular partners to maintain cellular homeostasis. The study investigates the role of the SUMO-interacting motif (SIM) in the subcellular targeting and cellular functions of EPAC1. It reveals that the SIM is a critical structural element for EPAC1's association with RanBP2/nucleoporin 358, a nucleoporin of the cytoplasmic filament component of the nuclear pore complex. Mutational disruption of EPAC1 SIM interferes with EPAC1's ability to activate its canonical effectors, small GTPases, Rap1 and Rap2, and noncanonical functions, such as the formation …

Background: Diagnosis of Kingella kingae skeletal system infections is made challenging by the microbe's fastidious nature. Detection and quantification of circulating microbial cell-free DNA (mcfDNA) in plasma by the Karius Test, a commercial metagenomic sequencing test, may offer promise in diagnosing pediatric spinal infections caused by difficult-to-culture organisms such as K. kingae .
Methods: Plasma mcfDNA sequencing detections of K. kingae from April 2018 to December 2020 were reviewed to identify pediatric (age < 18 years) patients. Medical charts of those with spinal infections were reviewed, and mcfDNA sequencing diagnostic performance was compared with usual care tests (ie, cultures, polymerase chain reaction).
Results: Ten children with K. kingae spinal infections were identified across 7 institutions. The median age was 16.5 months (range 11-23 months). All case-patients had vertebral osteomyelitis …

In this Essay, we explore the possibilities for putting AI technology in the hands of clients themselves, considering the advantages and disadvantages. Thinking about the specific context of immigration law, we could envision apps that help individuals to prepare for interviews for affirmative asylum, visas, or naturalization; to educate them about their rights in ways that are more specific, timely, and convenient than current know-your-rights formats; or, in a more attorney-adjacent interaction, using an app to conduct the initial intake interview and organize that information, making the usual time-consuming intake process more efficient and effective. We are not envisioning apps …

This Article examines the competitive dynamics in the global law market through the lens of the statutory evolution of the Rule in Hastings-Bass across various International Financial Centers (IFCs). Following the UK Supreme Court's 2013 decision in Pitt v Holt and Futter v Futter, which significantly restricted the judiciary's ability to void trustee decisions under the Rule, seven IFCs (Jersey, Bermuda, The Bahamas, the Dubai International Financial Center, the Cayman Islands, and the British Virgin Islands) enacted statutes to preserve and clarify the Rule within their jurisdictions. These legislative actions highlight the strategic adaptations by IFCs to enhance their legal …

Curative Identity Formation Themes To Counteract Law School’S Hidden Curriculum, Aric K. Short

Especially given the sensitive and malleable life stage that many of our students are in, law schools should take meaningful steps to blunt and counteract the negative effects of the hidden curriculum, including in ways suggested in other articles in this symposium. One direct way to present countervailing messaging is through a required 1L course on professional identity formation (PIF). As described in this article, there are a number of benefits of explicitly addressing PIF topics early in law school, and doing so not only more effectively prepares our students to become practicing attorneys, it also responds directly to some …

Nato Self-Defense – Is Article 5 The Right Framework For Responding To Sub-Kinetic Cyber Aggression?, Shreyas Kumar, Gary D. Brown, Srividhya Ragavan, Maddalena Cerrato, Gourav Nagar
Faculty Scholarship
Cyber aggression presents a significant challenge to traditional frameworks of collective defense, particularly under Article 5 of the NATO Washington Treaty, which obligates member states to respond collectively to an "armed attack." While NATO has acknowledged that cyber incidents may trigger Article 5, ambiguity persists over what constitutes a cyber "armed attack," especially in the absence of kinetic effects. This uncertainty complicates NATO’s ability to address increasingly prevalent sub-kinetic cyber threats, such as economic disruption, data manipulation, and interference in democratic processes. Unlike conventional military threats, cyber operations often fall below the traditional threshold of armed conflict while still exerting …

An extensive library of symptom inventories has been developed over time to measure clinical symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI), but this variety has led to several long-standing issues. Most notably, results drawn from different settings and studies are not comparable. This creates a fundamental problem in TBI diagnostics and outcome prediction, namely that it is not possible to equate results drawn from distinct tools and symptom inventories. Here, we present an approach using semantic textual similarity (STS) to link symptoms and scores across previously incongruous symptom inventories by ranking item text similarities according to their conceptual likeness. We tested …

The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, Second Edition (Y-BOCS-II) is an evidence-based clinician-rated measure for assessing the presence and severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The Spanish version of the Y-BOCS-II has not yet been validated. The present study examines the psychometric properties of the Spanish Y-BOCS-II (Spanish-Y-BOCS-II) in adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) who are of Hispanic/Latino ancestry. The Spanish-Y-BOCS-II was administered to 1805 adults with OCD. Participants also completed a battery of measures assessing OCD, depression, and anxiety symptoms. Background: The benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) for ampullary adenocarcinoma is unclear. The Hidden Genome model classifies prognostic subtypes with greater accuracy than standard histologic classification (intestinal [INT] vs pancreatobiliary [PB]), but its predictive capacity to guide the use of AC remains unstudied.
Methods: We applied the Hidden Genome model to an international cohort of 183 patients with resected ampullary adenocarcinoma who underwent genomic sequencing. The model quantified the predicted cell of origin (colorectal vs pancreas/distal bile duct) in all specimens. Overall survival (OS) was compared using Kaplan-Meier estimates, stratified by AC use versus surgery alone (SA).
Results: Most patients …

The Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network for Intermediate Phenotypes (B-SNIP) created psychosis Biotypes based on neurobiological measurements in a multi-ancestry sample. These Biotypes cut across DSM diagnoses of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder with psychosis. Two recently developed post hoc ancestry adjustment methods of Polygenic Risk Scores (PRSs) generate Ancestry-Adjusted PRSs (AAPRSs), which allow for PRS analysis of multi-ancestry samples. Applied to schizophrenia PRS, we found the Khera AAPRS method to show superior portability and comparable prediction accuracy as compared with the Ge method. The three Biotypes of psychosis disorders had similar AAPRSs across ancestries. In genomic analysis of Biotypes, 12 genes, …

Genome-wide association has identified regions of the genome that mediate risk for psychosis. It is possible that variants in these regions confer risk by altering gene expression. This work has predominantly been conducted in individuals of European descent and has focused narrowly on schizophrenia rather than psychosis as a syndrome. In the present study we investigated alterations in gene expression in African American individuals with a range of psychotic diagnoses to increase understanding of the etiology in an underserved population. We performed RNA-seq in whole bloody to survey the transcriptome in 126 patients with a psychosis-spectrum disorder and 217 healthy …

Periodontal diseases, a group of complex conditions marked by an excessive immune response and periodontal tissue destruction, are a global health concern. Since 1990, the incidence of these diseases has doubled, with Western sub-Saharan Africa experiencing the highest burden. Accurate diagnosis and case identification are crucial for understanding the etiology, features of disease, research, treatment and prevention. Modern perspectives on periodontal disease classification are based on commonality among those affected. However, current literature is often plagued by methodological inconsistencies and focused on disease mechanisms in European populations. Health inequalities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are exacerbated by these challenges, …

Aim
Academic integrity is crucial in dental education, especially during practical exams assessing competencies. Traditional oversight may not detect sophisticated academic dishonesty methods like radiograph substitution or tampering. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a novel artificial intelligence (AI) model utilizing a Siamese neural network to detect inconsistencies in radiographic images taken for root canal treatment (RCT) procedures in preclinical endodontic courses, thereby enhancing educational integrity.
Methododology
A Siamese neural network was designed to compare radiographs from different RCT procedures. The model was trained on 3390 radiographs, with data augmentation applied to improve generalizability. The dataset was split into …

Nodular hidradenoma (NH) is a benign adnexal tumor demonstrating both eccrine and apocrine differentiation. NH generally presents as a slow-growing, solitary, firm nodule, most commonly measuring 0.5-2 cm in diameter. It most frequently occurs on the scalp, thorax, abdomen, and gluteal regions, with a predilection for adult women in their fourth to eighth decades of life. We report the case of a 41-year-old immunocompetent female who presented with a red, 3.6 × 2.5 cm nodule on the left thigh. Due to the cystic nature of the lesion, it was initially presumed to be a benign cyst. However, as the lesion …

While there is a significant body of literature pertaining to thermophysical property measurements of molten salts, there is often a wide degree of variability among independent measurements of the same compounds. As such, the scientific community benefits greatly from an unbiased, independent assessment of duplicate datasets, so that reference correlations which describe these thermophysical properties as functions of temperature can be determined and then commonly used by researchers, scientists, and engineers. With regard to molten fluoride compounds, a significant time has elapsed since density and viscosity reference correlations have been determined; Janz conducted the most recent effort, in 1988, to …
