Climate change is a major cause of mental distress worldwide. In many ways, climate change has become a chronic disaster, while in other ways each acute event can accumulate and present challenges within and between communities. A growing body of evidence indicates that a changing climate can precipitate a cluster of negative affective states scholars call “ecological grief.” Ecological grief reflects psychological responses to climate changes and destruction of nature, species, culturally significant or sacred spaces. Until now, ecological grief has been conceptualized as a psychological response connected primarily to the destruction of the natural environment, and has not fully …

The Lived Experiences Of African American Women In Student Affairs Leadership, Beverly David-Lewis
The Lived Experiences Of African American Women In Student Affairs Leadership, Beverly David-Lewis
Education Doctoral
African American women are underrepresented in student affairs administration (Breeden, 2021). Several barriers limit opportunities for career advancement for African American women in this field, including the lack of mentors, minimal decision-making power, and the impact of both sexism and racism (Davis et al., 2021). This qualitative phenomenological research study explored the lived experiences of African American women in student affairs leadership positions at 4-year public institutions in New York State. This study answered the following research questions: 1. What are the perceived barriers that African American women experience when seeking career advancement in student affairs? 2. What strategies have …

A Parallel Fuzzy Logic Framework For Surgical Skill Evaluation Via Instance Segmentation And Deepsort Tracking, Mohsen M. Mohaidat
A Parallel Fuzzy Logic Framework For Surgical Skill Evaluation Via Instance Segmentation And Deepsort Tracking, Mohsen M. Mohaidat
Dissertations
Manual evaluation of suturing skills during laparoscopic training is often subjective and labor-intensive, resulting in the lack of scalable and consistent feedback for trainees. This study proposes an automated framework that not only significantly reduces the need for in-person assessment by experts but also ensures scalability, thereby addressing the objectivity and cost-effectiveness limitations. While low-cost laparoscopic box trainers have become increasingly popular for residency training, performance assessment still depends on expert supervision. The proposed system aims to alleviate these limitations.
This study introduces a novel automated framework incorporating an optimized DeepSORT algorithm for classifying, localizing, and tracking surgical tools using …

Diagnosis By Algorithm: The Transformative Impact Of Social Media–Driven Adhd Self-Diagnosis For Women Over 30 And The Proposal Of Neurotype Strain Theory, Rebecca Lynn Sevin
Dissertations
This dissertation explores the phenomenon of adult women who self-diagnosed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) through content encountered on social media platforms. Drawing on interpretive phenomenological analysis of ten in-depth interviews, the study investigates the emotional, cognitive, and institutional dimensions of this self-diagnosis process. Participants, all over the age of 30, reported that social media played a transformative role in helping them recognize ADHD traits in themselves. Rather than being misinformed or seeking shortcuts, participants engaged thoughtfully with ADHD-related content, valuing lived experience itself as a meaningful source of recognition and reflection. Their engagement was not primarily with educational materials …
Pension Participation Among Different Migrant Groups In China: Job Type, Regional Disparities, And Cross-Provincial Mobility, Boxia Xu
Dissertations
As China undergoes rapid economic transformation and urbanization, the migrant population has grown significantly. Although migrants play essential roles in the labor market, they face persistent structural barriers to pension access. Regional disparities, occupational segmentation, and cross-provincial mobility constraints affect the probability of their pension participation. While policy efforts aim to expand coverage, the fragmented nature of China’s pension system continues to hinder equitable access for migrants. As a result, ensuring pension participation among migrant groups remains a pressing challenge.
Using data from the 2014 China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS), this dissertation employs logistic regression models to investigate how job …

How Domestic Institutions Shape The Global Tech War, Anu Bradford, Eileen Li, Matthew C. Waxman
Faculty Scholarship
The United States (U.S.), China, and the European Union (EU) are engaged in a national security-driven economic competition over advanced technology. Many scholars and commentators focus on the external dimension of this geopolitical contest; that is, they describe the strategic choices by each actor in terms of geopolitical realities, threat perceptions, and relative power. However, this Article brings to the fore the internal dimension of the global tech war. We argue that each player’s strategy in the tech war is a function of its internal features, including basic constitutional powers, domestic legal institutions, and the relationships between the government and …
(De)Funding Family Separations, Joshua Gupta-Kagan
(De)Funding Family Separations, Joshua Gupta-Kagan
Faculty Scholarship
Federal foster care funding exists in tension with foundational family law principles. The law protects family integrity: the state may only separate parents and children in extreme cases, and, when it does, the state must work to reunify families. Yet the federal funding system directs billions of federal dollars to support CPS agencies and pay subsidies to foster parents, adoptive parents, and guardians. It does so via an open-ended entitlement, so that the more families a state separates, the more federal funds it receives. This system makes it relatively cheaper for CPS agencies to take custody of children, incentivizes states …

Supporting Academic Parents: The Effects Of Dependent Care Policies On Research Productivity Trends, Drake Van Egdom, Matthew M. Piszczek, Christiane Spitzmueller, Peggy Lindner, Aaron Clauset
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
On average, women faculty take on more childcare responsibilities, posing barriers to career success. Work-family policies represent one solution for advancing gender equity in academia as they support parents after childbirth with benefits for children, employees, and organizations. We contribute to understanding how the availability and use of dependent care policies (paid parental leave and childcare benefits) relate to long-term research productivity trends. Based on the work-home resources model, we theorize that policy availability provides contextual resources and policy use provides personal resources, leading to improvements in an individual's research productivity after they have a child. We also examine potential …

Whose Bot Is It Anyway? Determining Liability For Ai-Generated Content, John G. Browning
Whose Bot Is It Anyway? Determining Liability For Ai-Generated Content, John G. Browning
Northern Illinois University Law Review
As Chief Justice John Roberts noted in his State of the Judiciary address in late December 2023, artificial intelligence has not only had a seismic effect on society and the legal profession, but it is also presenting courts with novel questions to resolve. To date, most of the legal scholarship discussing generative AI has focused on areas like the ethical dimensions of its use, copyright infringement implications, AI governance issues, and the evidentiary questions raised by the use of this technology. However, a void in the scholarship exists with respect to the question of who should be liable for AI-generated …
Avoiding Dupe Process, Kevin Frazier
Avoiding Dupe Process, Kevin Frazier
Northern Illinois University Law Review
Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) combined with increased documentation of human overreliance on AI recommendations demands a reexamination of content moderation processes. Social media platforms—reacting to internal values, social pressure, regulatory mandates, or some combination of all three—have carried over procedural due process norms to content decisions. One common procedural protection is a “human-in-the-loop” (HITL) requirement. These requirements insist that a human provide some oversight role prior to an automated decision becoming final.
A review of the core values of due process—namely, accuracy, fairness, legitimacy—and the nature of hybrid decisional frameworks—those that involve AI and human inputs—show that HITL requirements …
The Emerging Danger Of Ai-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material And An Unprepared Criminal Code, Jessica L. Terkovich
The Emerging Danger Of Ai-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material And An Unprepared Criminal Code, Jessica L. Terkovich
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The development and dissemination of child sexual abuse material (“CSAM”) using artificial intelligence (“AI”) is becoming easier and easier with technological advancements. This Article argues that traditional child pornography statutes should be extended to encompass fully AI-generated images. The Article outlines the history of the nation’s current federal CSAM laws and details the results of a nationwide survey of statutes which determined that few states have effective laws on the books regarding AI-generated CSAM. This Article also offers recommendations for constructing effective laws against AI-generated CSAM and concludes that harm comes from the very existence of CSAM, no matter how …
Under The Limelight Of Fame: Life, Success, And Revenge Porn—A Public Figure’S Right To Privacy Versus Speech On Matters Of Public Concern, Jose Garcia
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The twenty-first century continues to evolve technologically and socially. However, the main constant in society is the public’s devotion to celebrity culture. Celebrity culture constantly has the public’s attention, from Travis Kelce’s and Taylor Swift’s relationship, to the controversies surrounding President Donald Trump. As a result, being a public figure in a technologically advanced society comes with a limited right to privacy. Public figures over the years have become victims of nonconsensual pornography with limited options for recovery and accountability. California Civil Code Section 1708.85 is a prime example of a statute that poses a challenge to a public figure …

High School Student Reflections Of In-School Suspension: A Mixed Methods Study, Daniel L. Booth
Ed.D. Capstone Reports
In response to Illinois Senate Bill 100, secondary schools have increasingly relied on in-school suspension (ISS) as a disciplinary measure for addressing major behavioral infractions. As a result, ISS has evolved into a long-term holding environment for students who repeatedly engage in misconduct. This study aimed to explore the experiences of high school students who were assigned ISS multiple times during the 2023-24 academic year. Specifically, it examined students’ perceptions of their high school environment through the lens of repeated ISS assignment. The findings offer insights into how the ISS setting can be restructured to better support students and reduce …
