Institutional Dual-Holders And Corporate Disclosures: A Natural Experiment, Lin Cheng, Qiang Cheng, Liwei Weng, Mark Yuzhi Yan Jun 2025

Institutional Dual-Holders And Corporate Disclosures: A Natural Experiment, Lin Cheng, Qiang Cheng, Liwei Weng, Mark Yuzhi Yan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study examines the impact of the presence of institutional dual-holders, whose portfolios hold both loans and equity securities of the same firms, on those firms' voluntary disclosures. Using mergers between institutional shareholders and lenders to the same firms as exogenous shocks to identify firms with institutional dual-holders that have high relative equity ownership, we document that such firms are less likely to provide management forecasts and disclose fewer voluntary 8-K items. In cross-sectional analyses, we find that the reduction in voluntary disclosures is more pronounced when institutional dual-holders have higher board representation and when firms have lower litigation risk. …

75 | Cana Of Galilee: Excavations At Karm Er-Ras 1999–2011, Yardenna Alexandre

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This volume describes the results of multiple small-scale salvage excavations that took place at the site of Karm er-Ras in the Lower Galilee between 1999 and 2011. Archaeological remains of ten strata were revealed, dating from Iron Age II to the Byzantine period, including architecture, pottery, glass, coins and special finds. The archaeological data reveals the history of settlement of this site, and its changing ethnic and religious affinities over some 1500 years. Following detailed analysis of the archaeological data and the literary sources, the author argues for the identification of the Roman-period village at Karm er-Ras with ‘Cana of …

Enhancing Vulnerability Detection Via Inter-Procedural Semantic Completion, Bozhi Wu, Chengjie Liu, Zhiming Li, Yushi Cao, Jun Sun, Shang-Wei Lin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Inspired by advances in deep learning, numerous learning-based approaches for vulnerability detection have emerged, primarily operating at the function level for scalability. However, this design choice has a critical limitation: many vulnerabilities span multiple functions, causing function-level approaches to lose the semantics of called functions and fail to capture true vulnerability patterns. To address this issue, we propose VulnSC, a novel framework designed to enhance learning-based approaches by complementing inter-procedural semantics. VulnSC retrieves the source code of called functions for datasets and leverages large language models (LLMs) with well-designed prompts to generate summaries for these functions. The datasets, enhanced with …

Towards Uncertainty Aware Task Delegation And Human-Ai Collaborative Decision-Making, Min Hun Lee, Martyn Zhe Yu Tok

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite the growing promise of artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting decision-making across domains, fostering appropriate human reliance on AI remains a critical challenge. In this paper, we investigate the utility of exploring distance-based uncertainty scores for task delegation to AI and describe how these scores can be visualized through embedding representations for human-AI decision-making. After developing an AI-based system for physical stroke rehabilitation assessment, we conducted a study with 19 health professionals and 10 students in medicine/health to understand the effect of exploring distance-based uncertainty scores on users’ reliance on AI. Our findings showed that distance-based uncertainty scores outperformed traditional …

The Impact Of Ai Bots And Crawlers On Open Repositories: Results Of A Coar Survey, April 2025, Kathleen Shearer, Paul Walk

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

There are a growing number of AI bots crawling repositories. These automated bots, or crawlers, navigate the internet, gathering data and indexing information for search engines, AI and large language models, and other purposes. While some bots are rather innocuous, others are sufficiently aggressive that they are increasingly causing service disruptions in repositories (and other scholarly communications infrastructures). To learn more about the current state and gain a better understanding about the impact of bots and crawlers on repositories, COAR distributed a survey to members in April 2025. The survey received 66 responses from repositories around the world (22 from …

Transparency Without Teeth: An Empirical Understanding Of Data Broker Regulation, Elijah Greisz Jun 2025

Transparency Without Teeth: An Empirical Understanding Of Data Broker Regulation, Elijah Greisz

University of Chicago Law Review

It is no secret that data has taken over the modern economy, and it is unsurprising that governments have begun acting in response. Perceiving mismatched bargaining power between firms and consumers—and certain externalities resulting from the massive quantities of data being collected by firms about those consumers— many state legislatures have passed generally applicable data privacy statutes. These laws give consumers certain rights to control the data they distribute in everyday commerce. Such regulations follow an “interaction model,” whereby consumers can exercise their rights by interacting with data-possessing firms.

But there is a key player that complicates this scheme: the …

Injury Equity: The Rise Of Future Stakes Settlements, Margaret Schaack Jun 2025

Injury Equity: The Rise Of Future Stakes Settlements, Margaret Schaack

University of Chicago Law Review

In a changing environment in which class action defendants are turning to aggressive strategies to contain the cost of lawsuits, including using bankruptcy proceedings to limit their liability, plaintiffs’ attorneys are fighting back by seeking new ways to recover damages from illiquid and functionally judgment-proof companies. The latest development is the “future stakes settlement,” unveiled in the agreement to end a privacy law class action lawsuit against the startup Clearview AI. Under this novel mechanism, a defendant grants a privately traded equity stake to the class in exchange for a release of all claims

Future stakes settlements, though similar to …

Identifiable To Whom? Clarifying Biometric Privacy Rights In Illinois And Beyond, Hana Ferrero Jun 2025

Identifiable To Whom? Clarifying Biometric Privacy Rights In Illinois And Beyond, Hana Ferrero

University of Chicago Law Review

Illinois’s Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) is the country’s most powerful law governing biometric data—data generated from an individual’s biological characteristics, like fingerprints and voiceprints. Over the past decade, BIPA garnered a reputation as an exceptionally plaintiff-friendly statute. But from 2023 to 2024, the Illinois legislature, Illinois Supreme Court, and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals all sided with BIPA defendants, largely for the first time. Most significantly, in Zellmer v. Meta Platforms, Inc., the Ninth Circuit dismissed the plaintiff’s BIPA claim because the face scan collected by the defendant could not be used to identify him.

It is unclear whether …

Accidental Ingestion Of Extended-Release Guanfacine In A Toddler., Dina R Assali, Alek Q Adkins, Jonathan Chang Jun 2025

Accidental Ingestion Of Extended-Release Guanfacine In A Toddler., Dina R Assali, Alek Q Adkins, Jonathan Chang

Trauma and Acute Care Articles

This case report describes the clinical presentation and treatment following an exploratory ingestion of extended release (ER) guanfacine in a healthy toddler. Guanfacine, an alpha-2a agonist, can cause transient hypertension as it moves from the serum into the CNS where it causes the more commonly seen central nervous system (CNS) depression, hypotension, and bradycardia. Persistent hypertension requiring intravenous (IV) vasodilatory medication is a rare and life-threatening complication of an alpha-2 agonist with only one other published report. This case report re-emphasizes and further expands available literature on this rarely reported effect.

A Developmental Texture Framework For Food Texture Progression: Implications For Feeding Development, Oral Motor Skills, And Pediatric Feeding Disorder, Amy L. Delaney, Sarah Staskiewicz, Suzanne Evans Morris, Sarah Smith-Simpson, Praveen S. Goday

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

The introduction of food textures in a child's first 2 years of life plays a vital role in growth, nutrition, and feeding development. However, the absence of a standardized texture framework for studying texture progression limits both pediatric feeding research and the ability to diagnose pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) based on age-appropriate expectations. To address this gap, authors Delaney and Goday proposed data sharing from the Nestlé Feeding Infant-Toddler Study (FITS) to explore texture progression and define age-appropriate texture expectations. In response, Nestlé assembled a multidisciplinary panel of feeding experts to create standardized textures but did not provide financial or …

Fixed Points In Linear Regression, David L. Farnsworth Jun 2025

Fixed Points In Linear Regression, David L. Farnsworth

Articles

There is a set of points in the plane whose elements correspond to the observations that are used to generate a simple least-squares regression line. Each value of the independent variable in the observations matches up with one of these points, which are called pivot or fixed points. The coordinates of the fixed points are derived, and the properties of the points are explored. All points in the plane that yield each of the fixed points are found. The role that fixed points play in regression diagnostics is investigated. A new mechanical device that uses linkages to model the role …

Ac-Induced Corrosion Of Cathodically Protected Pipelines: Experimental Study And Probabilistic Modeling, Yuhan Su, Emadoddin Majdabadi Farahani, Qindan Huang, Qixin Zhou Jun 2025

Ac-Induced Corrosion Of Cathodically Protected Pipelines: Experimental Study And Probabilistic Modeling, Yuhan Su, Emadoddin Majdabadi Farahani, Qindan Huang, Qixin Zhou

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This study investigated the effects of alternating current (AC) interference on pipeline steel under cathodic protection (CP). In a simulated solution, real-time electrochemical measurements and corrosion rate analysis were conducted on two steel types (C1018 and X60) under various levels of AC interference with CP. Due to the complexity of AC-induced corrosion, relying on the shift in DC potential alone cannot accurately demonstrate the corrosion behavior in the presence of AC interference. In fact, such an approach may mislead the predictions of corrosion performance. It is observed that AC interference reduced the effectiveness of CP and increased the corrosion rate …

The Mda's Impact: Going Beyond Insurance Reimbursements, Todd Christy D.D.S.

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Dr. Todd Christy, MDA Immediate Past President, acknowledges that inadequate insurance reimbursement rates are a major concern for dental practices. He explains that federal antitrust laws restrict the MDA from directly intervening to "fix" these rates. However, the article emphasizes that the MDA provides significant value and advocacy in many other areas crucial to dentists. Key achievements include eliminating the tax on dental prosthetics, legislating network leasing protections, expanding kindergarten oral health assessments, and regulating mobile dentistry. The MDA also offered vital support during the COVID-19 pandemic, advocated for increased Medicaid facility fees for anesthesia procedures, and assists members with …
