Seen And Heard: A Visual Testimony Of Purity Culture Using Qualitative Photovoice Methodology, Amanda Brown Jun 2025

Seen And Heard: A Visual Testimony Of Purity Culture Using Qualitative Photovoice Methodology, Amanda Brown

Dissertations

Purity culture, rooted in Christian teachings, has profoundly shaped individuals’ identities, relationships, and perceptions of sexuality, gender, and faith. While popular culture is talking about the effects of purity culture, scholarly literature is lacking. This study employed photovoice methodology to center the voices of those who grew up in purity culture, using photography and personal narratives to explore its long-term effects. The study focused on how individuals who have experienced purity culture articulate and visualize their stories, revealing nuanced insights across seven thematic domains: gender expectations, romantic relationships, faith, mental health, identity formation, sex and sexuality, and healing and …

Llnl Raft Flash Pole Redesign, Jack Stangel, Evan Wolfson, Jake Borden, Alexander Meeter

Mechanical Engineering

During research exercises in the ocean, Lawrence Livermore deploys a fleet of rafts outfitted with flash modules affixed to tall poles (in tandem called flash poles) that flash while a photo is taken to act as datums for data collection. The current flash pole design that the LIDSS (Lawrence Livermore Independent Diagnostic Scoring System) team uses is too short to be visible in high seas, not mechanically suited to be made taller, too susceptible to the elements and blunt impact and too difficult to service. We aim to solve these issues.

Brush Seal Cycling Test Rig, Angelo J. Reis, Neil M. Bedagkar, Max A. Soury, Eoin K. Lenham Jun 2025

Brush Seal Cycling Test Rig, Angelo J. Reis, Neil M. Bedagkar, Max A. Soury, Eoin K. Lenham

Mechanical Engineering

To prevent backflow from the high pressure compressor stages of their gas turbines to lower pressure regions, Solar Turbines utilizes brush seals along their driveshafts. Due to manufacturing limitations, no shaft is perfectly symmetric about its rotating axis, leading to orbiting that creates asymmetric friction on the shaft through rubbing. With this biased application of friction comes a hotspot on one side of the shaft, causing bowing of the shaft and cascading into an amplified vibrational response. Our goal is to gather data on this phenomenon and offer a potential solution.

Federal Income Taxation, Andrew Todd Jun 2025

Federal Income Taxation, Andrew Todd

Mercer Law Review

In 2024, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit issued only one published opinion, Green Rock LLC v. Internal Revenue Service, and a handful of unpublished opinions involving U.S. federal income tax issues. Green Rock presented an issue of first impression in the Eleventh Circuit: the validity of an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Notice that designated transactions as “listed transactions” without following the notice and comment rulemaking procedures prescribed by the Administrative Procedure Act (APA). This Article surveys that opinion.

Topodino: Self-Supervised Topological Representation Learning For Neuronal Morphologies, Yasser Binbisher Jun 2025

Topodino: Self-Supervised Topological Representation Learning For Neuronal Morphologies, Yasser Binbisher

Master's Theses

Neuronal cell types are categorized by transcriptomic identity, yet their morphological heterogeneity defies this classification. In response, researchers have adopted unsupervised graph representation learning as a tool to reveal morphological variation within single-class transcriptomic types. However, the complex geometry of neuronal morphology—especially long axons and dense dendrites—challenges graph neural networks, which struggle with message propagation across extended structures. To mitigate this, current approaches enforce sub-sampling on neuronal graphs and omit axons entirely, sacrificing critical biological features for computational efficiency. To overcome this trade-off, this thesis introduces TopoDINO, a self-supervised, topology-aware representation learning model designed to preserve the full hierarchical organization …

Characterization Of Indoor Air Quality And Thermal Comfort Of University Classrooms, Andrew Sugamele Jun 2025

Characterization Of Indoor Air Quality And Thermal Comfort Of University Classrooms, Andrew Sugamele

Master's Theses

Indoor air quality (IAQ) significantly affects cognitive performance, yet many older buildings at Cal Poly, such as Building 20, struggle to maintain healthy indoor environments due to outdated ventilation systems. This thesis aims to identify issues and provide suggestions on how we can improve the learning environment to improve student success within Building 20. Temperature, relative humidity, and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration inside Building 20 were measured from January to April 2025. To determine the effects of different ventilation strategies, a model of Building 20, room 128, was developed and validated using DesignBuilder. Additionally, ventilation rates were measured …

From Tree To Shrub? The Fate Of Tanoak Through Fire And Nonnative Disease, Jacqueline Rose Jun 2025

From Tree To Shrub? The Fate Of Tanoak Through Fire And Nonnative Disease, Jacqueline Rose

Master's Theses

Invasive plant pathogens have killed an uncountable number of trees and disrupted ecosystem processes throughout the world. Newly introduced pathogens may interact with historically occurring disturbances in unexpected ways to cause amplified mortality and change to ecosystem processes. Here, I examine the a natural experiment created by three wildfires in Big Sur, a portion of the central coast of California impacted by the nonnative pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, to forecast the future of a species susceptible to the pathogen. Using a plot network which spans the length of Big Sur, I track the survival of individual tanoak (Notholithocarpus densiflorus) stems and …

Situating The Statistical Legacies Of Galton And Fisher: Multi-Layered Discussions In The Mathematics Classroom, Deborah Kent, Jemma Lorenat

The Mathematics Enthusiast

When ethics requirements are confined to courses taught by non-STEM faculty, students may erroneously conclude that such considerations are at most marginal to their professional training. Primary source readings and discussion frameworks can tangibly link data analysis to questions of values within data science, computing ethics, or statistics courses. The particular cases of Sir Francis Galton and Sir Ronald Fisher—both statisticians and eugenicists—provide a rich collection of easily accessible digitized primary source material as well as a vast number of related popular and technical publications. Galton and Fisher figured centrally in the development of statistics as it is currently practiced …

Trusted Together: A Commognitive Perspective On A Primary Source Project In Multivariable Calculus, Abe Edwards

The Mathematics Enthusiast

When an instructor asks their students to read, discuss, and learn from primary historical sources as replacements for traditional textbook expositions, it requires trust both of their students and of the source authors. This article draws on the commognitive theory of learning to justify this trust. The article demonstrates how a primary source project related to Green’s Theorem can be used to both help students see that mathematical objects evolve over time, and to give students opportunities to increase their participation in the mathematical community through the adoption of new mathematical discourses.

New Methods Of Capturing Students’ Experiences With Primary Source Projects: Pioneering A Transgressive Lens, Mark Watford, Kathleen Michelle Clark, Cihan Can

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The mathematics education research landscape possesses limited examples of large-scale research regarding students’ experience with primary historical sources in the learning of mathematics at the undergraduate level. However, the field continues to investigate methods of determining how students might overcome obstacles to reach new outcomes. This article documents an exploration within the TRansforming Instruction in Undergraduate Mathematics via Primary Historical Sources (TRIUMPHS) project that combined transgressions theory and situated learning theory, thereby illuminating three components of the former—boundaries, transgressive actions, and outcomes. In this regard, we capture students’ Primary Source Project (PSP) learning experiences in Abstract Algebra courses and bring …

Equality And Protection: The Forgotten Meaning Of The Fourteenth Amendment, David H. Gans Jun 2025

Equality And Protection: The Forgotten Meaning Of The Fourteenth Amendment, David H. Gans

Denver Law Review

At the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause are two fundamental principles: equality and protection. Tragically, the Supreme Court has read one of these two principles—protection—out of our foundational charter. While the Justices repeatedly invoke the textual promise of equal protection, their precedent turns a blind eye to the constitutional command of protection and the idea that, in return for allegiance, the government owes its citizenry protection. Until the Supreme Court takes seriously the right to protection embedded in the Fourteenth Amendment, its jurisprudence will continue to be deeply flawed. As the text and history laid out in …
