Parent’S Health Literacy And Stress Level In The Inpatient Pediatric Setting, Tina C. Smith
Parent’S Health Literacy And Stress Level In The Inpatient Pediatric Setting, Tina C. Smith
Dissertations
Purpose: This study examined the relationship between parent health literacy and stress levels during their child’s inpatient hospitalization.
Background: In 2019, over five million pediatric hospitalizations occurred in the United States. Parents are central to their child’s care, but stress and sociodemographic factors may hinder their ability to understand and apply health information. This study explored how stress and other variables impact parent health literacy during hospitalization.
Methods: A cross-sectional design included a demographic survey, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), and the Newest Vital Sign (NVS). Bivariate analyses (Chi-square, t-tests) and logistic regression were used to assess …
Leading Change For Transgender And Gender Diverse Healthcare: Assessing Organizational Readiness, Braxten Lovett
Leading Change For Transgender And Gender Diverse Healthcare: Assessing Organizational Readiness, Braxten Lovett
Dissertations
Background: Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals face persistent stigma and systemic discrimination across multiple societal domains, with healthcare settings—intended as safe spaces—often being among the most harmful. Despite increased visibility of TGD populations and growing research on their health inequities, inclusive healthcare remains insufficiently addressed by many healthcare leaders, adding to the urgency to advance equitable, inclusive care. Additionally, structural cisnormativity and binary gender frameworks continue to perpetuate misinformation, erasure, and health disparities. Addressing these entrenched barriers requires systemic reform rooted in cultural humility, inclusive practices, and a commitment to dismantling cisnormative bias within healthcare delivery and policy. This study …

Thrombospondin Type 1 Domain-Containing Protein 1 (THSD1) is a transmembrane protein increasingly recognized for its critical roles in vascular biology and disease pathogenesis. Initially identified as a marker of hematopoietic stem and endothelial cells during embryogenesis, THSD1 has since been implicated in a wide spectrum of physiological and pathological processes. This paper consolidates current knowledge on THSD1, with a focus on its roles in vascular integrity, perinatal disorders, and tumorigenesis. In vascular systems, THSD1 promotes focal adhesion assembly and suppresses autophagy-mediated adhesion turnover, thereby stabilizing endothelial attachment and maintaining barrier function. Genetic and functional studies support its protective role against …

Time For Change: The Importance Of Copyright For Manga And Anime, Simone Schroff
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Copyright law is key to the creative industries and plays a vital role in shaping the relationships between authors, commercial intermediaries, and audiences. However, the law significantly deviates from the social norms and expectations prevalent in the creative industries, leading to under-researched but key areas of misunderstanding and conflict. This article seeks to address this gap by providing a copyright law starting-point for those interested in the creative industries. First, this article provides a basic overview of copyright law and its features; in particular, how it applies to manga and anime. Second, the effect of copyright on the marketization and exploitation …
Redefining The Photic Zone: Beyond The Autotroph-Centric View Of Light In The Ocean, Thomas Davies, Tim Smyth
Redefining The Photic Zone: Beyond The Autotroph-Centric View Of Light In The Ocean, Thomas Davies, Tim Smyth
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Traditional measures of the photic zone have remained focused on autotrophs, limiting understanding of how changing marine lightscapes impact heterotrophs that use light as a resource or an environmental cue. We propose a new photic zone definition that encompasses all biological processes influenced by celestial light, and a new measure of photic zone depth, the minimum light intensity that elicits biological responses. This approach allows photic zone measures to be inclusive of all marine photobiology driven by sunlight, moonlight, or starlight, and enables urgently needed exploration of the nature, extent and ecological implications of changing marine lightscapes.

A landlord's motion to reargue a holdover case, based on non-renewal for alleged arrears under RPL § 226-c, was denied. The court reiterated that even pre-amendment RPL § 226-c notices, when based on nonpayment under the Good Cause Eviction Law (GCEL), must reasonably inform the tenant of the exact sum owed and its calculation to allow for a cure. The court found that simply stating a lump sum of arrears without detailing the periods of nonpayment was insufficient under RPAPL § 741(4), affirming its prior dismissal despite the landlord's argument for liberal construction.

Exploring Bim Capabilities For Life Cycle Assessment In Structural Projects: A Valencian Barraca Case Study For Sustainable Material Choices, Oscar Selfa, Barry Mcauley, Kieran Lakhera O'Shea
Conference Papers
The construction sector significantly contributes to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, resource consumption, and waste generation, with structural materials accounting for up to 40% of embedded carbon. This study investigates the integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools to promote sustainable structural design. Using a BIM model of a Valencian barraca, three scenarios were evaluated: traditional materials (adobe and wood), concrete with steel, and concrete with Cross- Laminated Timber (CLT). Results show that natural materials generate lower impacts, while steel and concrete exhibit higher emissions. This work proposes a workflow integrating BIM, …

The accurate monitoring of tree canopy coverage is crucial for social and environmental studies as well as city planning. Our goal is to provide a solution that utilizes available resources like yearly aerial imagery to generate tree data to track all tree canopy within a city such as San Jose, CA. By utilizing open-source software and publicly available data, we streamlined the process by eliminating the need for expensive equipment and time-consuming manual efforts associated with traditional methods. The methodology involves the conversion of aerial imagery datasets into geo-referenced TIFF format through a resampling process. To optimize efficiency, we strategically …

Making A Career Of Humanity: Implications Of Activism For Mental Health, Tate Henderson
Making A Career Of Humanity: Implications Of Activism For Mental Health, Tate Henderson
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Collective action in society, or activism, may increase psychological distress of participants and societies. Multiple studies regarding this relationship of activist behavior and mental health among marginalized or minority groups were reviewed. Certain variables might decrease or even reverse this effect of activism on mental health. Activist behavior that is more passionate and low-risk could improve psychological well-being. Social identity theory explains that increased identification with a group may improve mental health. Despite social identity, activist behavior of itself may also increase feelings of self-actualization, or the feelings of joy that come from personal growth. Such participation in activism may …
When Racist Jokes Go Unchecked: The Plight Of Asian Americans At The Hands Of Fellow Americans, Sedric Jacobsen
When Racist Jokes Go Unchecked: The Plight Of Asian Americans At The Hands Of Fellow Americans, Sedric Jacobsen
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Asian American people are often the target of unchecked racist jokes levelled by fellow Americans. Because of the model minority myth, racism towards Asian Americans has received less attention than that of other minority groups. Stereotypes furthered by racist jokes may seem innocuous, but they lead to mental, emotional, and potentially physical harm. Victim blaming is a common response to objections levied by Asian American people and this process leads to further psychological damage for the offended. The favored profile of an American is white, heterosexual, and male. Divergence from this model leads to prejudice, a response that is taught …

Differences In Diagnosis, Perception, And Recognition Among Children With Autism-Spectrum Disorder Belonging To Racial And Ethnic Minority Groups, Madelyne L. Syphus
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Despite Autism-Sprectrum Disorder's (ASD's) relatively short existence as a diagnostic category, it has become one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders in the world. However, as awareness of ASD rises, those who do not fit the White-male diagnostic mold are often left out of conversations and experience disparities in diagnosis, recognition, and support for autism (Matthews, 2019). Many racial and ethnic minority groups suffer from professionals' lack of cultural awareness, and spontaneous judgments often result in lower rates of referral for and diagnosis of ASD (Begeer et al., 2008; Burke et al., 2015; Lopez, 2014). Differences in social norms among …

Jewish Contributions To The Anti-Apartheid Movement, Ashley Davis
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
In his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela (1995) wrote, "I have foundJews to be more broad-minded than most Whites on the issues of race and politics, perhaps because they themselves have historically been victims of prejudice" (p. 91). The centuries of persecution faced by Jews engrained into J ewish teachings and culture a strong sense of morality and pushed them towards social and political activism. In South Africa, while White Jews were considered a part of the privileged minority, they faced discrimination and blatant anti-Semitism. Their privileged position as Whites and simultaneous ethnic status as 'lesser' than …

Does Lifetime Stress Influence Chemotherapy Symptoms In Women From Different Racial And Ethnic Groups?, Jemmie Hoang
Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports
We hypothesize women with cancer who identify as a racial and/or ethnic minority will endorse a multitude of lifetime stressors contributing to high symptom(s) severity and burden. This study will be among the first studies to comprehensively describe cumulative life stressors, and its potential influence on cancer symptom burden among racial and/or ethnic minority women with cancer who are receiving chemotherapy. Our study will provide further evidence of the importance of screening for life stressor events that may impact chemotherapy symptom experience.
