Does Choice Of Media Amplify Support For Political Violence?, Nathan Palomares

Political Science Student Papers and Posters

Acts of political violence have increased in frequency and exposure to American society via news media. Violent rhetoric is a common theme among many forms of media Americans consume, including social media, which has become an essential platform where Americans increasingly get political news information. The events of the January 6 Capitol Riots and the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump in late 2024 show how urgent the rise of political violence is and its destabilization of American Democracy. In this paper, I examine the relationship between the types of news media people consume and their potential to increase people’s …

The Next Four Years: Geographical Reflections On The Second Trump Administration, Caroline R. Nagel, Peter Hopkins

Faculty Publications

In this introductory essay, we reflect on the significance of the re-election of Donald Trump to the presidency in the United States, and we provide some context for interpreting Trump's second term. Two of Trump's early policy moves—the release of billions of gallons of water from reservoirs in California and the granting of refugee status to Afrikaners—portend four years of politics based on alternative facts, conspiracy theories, and racial grievances. Trump's political agenda has received a significant boost from Silicon Valley billionaires, who are keen to eliminate regulatory bureaucracy. Paradoxically, while allied with high-tech futurists, Trump's policies hearken to an …

Startup companies and originated small businesses are an essential aspect of our nation’s economy, contributing to many organizations that aim, in some cases, to become larger enterprises. As a small business is in the mode of sustaining and growth, minimizing cybersecurity and business resilience threats may not be front and center on the minds of these entities. This paper will provide a case study background about a project and effort – the New Jersey Cybersecurity Regional Cluster (NJCRC) - that has contributed significant outreach to New Jersey small businesses to provide free cybersecurity risk assessments to help small businesses prepare …

Racial Disparities In Crime-Based Removal Proceedings, Emily Ryo, Ian Peacock, Weston Ley, Christopher Levesque May 2025

Racial Disparities In Crime-Based Removal Proceedings, Emily Ryo, Ian Peacock, Weston Ley, Christopher Levesque

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Whether and to what extent racial minorities experience harsher treatment or face worse outcomes in court are questions of fundamental importance for any justice system. Questions of racial inequality are especially salient in the context of removal proceedings that are triggered by immigrants’ criminal history. Many individuals in crime-based removal proceedings are immigrants of color who face a host of legal disadvantages that are tantamount to double penalties for the same crime for which they have already been punished through the criminal justice system. This Article offers, for the first time, systematic empirical analyses of crime-based removal proceedings decided between …

Toward A Dynamic View Of Corporate Purpose, Dorothy Lund May 2025

Toward A Dynamic View Of Corporate Purpose, Dorothy Lund

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Scholars debating the corporation’s role in society generally advance the view that there is only one desirable orientation for corporations and their management. Specifically, proponents of a stakeholder governance model contend that focusing management on a broad set of corporate constituents maximizes overall welfare, while advocates of a shareholder-centric directive counter that prioritizing shareholders creates social welfare by rendering the firm most profitable. This Article offers another view: It suggests that the welfare-maximizing purpose for corporations could change depending on external economic conditions, which both of these positions assume away. Specifically, shareholder primacy is likely to promote welfare in a …

Against Attorney General Self-Referral In Immigration Law, Stella Burch Elias, Paul Gowder May 2025

Against Attorney General Self-Referral In Immigration Law, Stella Burch Elias, Paul Gowder

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

This Article advances a rule-of-law-based critique of the Attorney General’s immigration self-referral power. We argue that the Attorney General’s self-referral and review power over pending immigration proceedings allows an appointed Executive Branch official to engage in unchecked and unilateral lawmaking and, therefore, should be abolished. Scholars have typically understood legal stability, prospectivity, and the separation of policymaking from adjudication as requirements of the Anglo-American rule of law regime which protect individual freedom and equality. It is traditionally believed that by limiting policy-driven legislation to prospective, general laws which are enacted through an explicitly legislative process, individuals may be secure against …

Chemotherapeutic resistance is a major obstacle to chemotherapeutic failure. Cancer cell resistance involves several mechanisms, including epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), signaling pathway bypass, drug efflux activation, and impairment of drug entry. P-glycoproteins (P-gp) are an efflux transporter that pumps chemotherapeutic drugs out of cancer cells, resulting in chemotherapeutic resistance. Several types of long noncoding RNA (lncRNAs) have been identified in resistant cancer cells, including ODRUL, MALAT1, and ANRIL. The high expression level of ODRUL is related to the induction of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) gene expression, resulting in the emergence of doxorubicin resistance in osteosarcoma. lncRNAs are observed to be regulators of …

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) using kilovoltage cone-beam CT (CBCT) has become an indispensable tool to ensure the geometric accuracy of radiotherapy treatment delivery. Although significant technical advances have been made in reducing imaging dose, the repeated imaging procedures can still accumulate significant dose to healthy tissues. Despite the widespread use, we still lack clear guidance for optimisation and widely accepted frameworks for evaluating the quality and suitability of CBCT imaging protocols. To address this gap, the 2022 European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) Physics Workshop focused on image-quality and imaging-dose optimisation for IGRT using CBCT. This publication represents a …

Background/objectives: Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive (+) anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is known to express CD25, but its significance has not been well studied.

Methods: In the present study, we identified 54 ALK+ ALCL patients with CD25 results available and investigated the significance of CD25 expression levels.

Results: Forty-two (78%) cases had high CD25 expressions, whereas low CD25 expressions were found in 12 (22%) cases. Compared with ALK+ ALCL patients with CD25-high neoplasms, patients with CD25-low neoplasms were older (median: 40 years vs. 29 years, p = 0.01) and more often had thrombocytopenia (40% vs. 0%, p = 0.02). Between …

Prevention Of And Response To International Crimes Against And Affecting Children, Diane Marie Amann May 2025

Prevention Of And Response To International Crimes Against And Affecting Children, Diane Marie Amann

Scholarly Works

This submission endeavoured to aid the efforts of Parliament’s Standing Group on Atrocity Crimes to promote within the United Kingdom a comprehensive framework regarding international crimes. The submission stressed that prevention is the preferred course: ex ante prevention avoids present harms, inter-generational traumas, and future risks of retaliatory violence, while ex post responses, in the form of criminal proceedings, are likely to be random and selective, not comprehensive. It urged that when harm does occur, responses must aim not only to exact retribution, but also to repair injuries, heal societies, and foster peaceful settlements of disputes. To these ends, the …

Remote islands receive plastic debris from elsewhere, ranging from microplastics (>5 mm) to macroplastics, which can further breakdown into microplastics. The ingestion of microplastics by marine species has been linked to decreased fitness. Reef manta rays, Mobula alfredi, are liable to ingest microplastics due to their filter-feeding strategy and habitat overlap with plastic hotspots. Their population is in decline due to unsustainable fishing pressures and a slow life history, with potential additional demographic pressure from plastic pollution. This study investigates the concentration and characteristics of microplastics in the top 0.5 m of the water column in reef manta rays …

The Cgas/Sting Pathway: Friend Or Foe In Regulating Cardiomyopathy, Weiyue Wang, Yuanxu Gao, Hyun Kyoung Lee, Albert Cheung-Hoi Yu, Markus Kipp, Hannes Kaddatz, Jiangshan Zhan

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

Inflammation is a central hallmark of cardiomyopathy, where misdirected immune responses contribute to chronic myocardial dysfunction. Among the emerging molecular mechanisms implicated in this process, the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)/stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathway has garnered increasing attention. Acting as a key cytosolic DNA sensor, the cGAS/STING pathway orchestrates inflammatory responses triggered by microbial infections or endogenous cellular stressors such as autophagy and apoptosis. Despite its pivotal role, the precise molecular mechanisms regulating this pathway and its role in cardiomyopathy-associated inflammation remain poorly understood and subject to ongoing debate. To address this scientific gap, we first reviewed key …

Retracted: Accurate Electrocardiogram Classification Of Heart Disease Using Deep Learning Network, Hadeel M. Saleh, Sahar Hamad Ahmed, Akeel Sh. Mahmoud

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Long short-term memory networks can effectively process complex temporal patterns in electrocardiogram data. These sequential models excel at classifying heart disease from the rich signals captured by electrocardiograms. However, traditional algorithms struggle with the intricate waveforms encoded in each heartbeat. Deeper architectures such as LSTM are better equipped to untangle the subtle variations between healthy sinus rhythms and lethal arrhythmias. In this study, an LSTM model was developed to diagnose disease from the PTB dataset. The network was trained using a fusion of deep learning schemes for sequential data. The model underwent several evaluations, from a confusion matrix mapping predictions …

“Honey, Life Is Just A Classroom:” Using Taylor Swift As A Pedagogical Tool For College Composition, Liz Thomae May 2025

“Honey, Life Is Just A Classroom:” Using Taylor Swift As A Pedagogical Tool For College Composition, Liz Thomae

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

As educators, we confront the challenge of cultivating a deeper understanding of writing in an age obsessed with utilitarianism, instant gratification, and pragmatism. Students come into our classrooms inundated with these messages of utility and often find subjects within the humanities, especially first year writing, boring and unhelpful. Especially with the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) use in our classrooms and society at large, we as pedagogues have our work cut out for us. I propose a pedagogical approach that bridges students' interests with essential writing skills by integrating Taylor Swift's music into the composition classroom. Swift's evolution as …

The Relationships Among Orthorexia Nervosa, Perfectionist Tendencies And Academic Achievement In Nutrition And Dietetics Students, Sophia Grace Owens

Master's Theses

Eating disorders can cause a disturbance in how the health of food is viewed (Cerniglia et al., 2017). If a person has disturbances in their eating behaviors that can cause harm to their health, but the behaviors do not fit into the criteria of a specific eating disorder, they fall into the category of a disordered eating pattern (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 2018). Because of the stress the college environment can cause students, some college students may cling to anything they can control, which may be reflected in their dietary habits. Orthorexia Nervosa (ON), a disordered eating pattern, is …
