Higher Education faculty balance time in teaching, scholarship, and service, along with many other duties in their roles (Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, 2024). In our efforts to be stewards of our time and craft, faculty look for ways to be more efficient in these areas. With the increase of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our personal and professional lives, this paper discusses the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI), Microsoft Copilot, as an analytic tool in the qualitative data analysis process. Qualitative data was collected from transcripts of recorded meetings and an online journal that included text and …

Breaking The Mold: An Examination Of Student Perceptions With Faculty-Led Native American Student Research Experiences, Caitlin A. Johnson
Breaking The Mold: An Examination Of Student Perceptions With Faculty-Led Native American Student Research Experiences, Caitlin A. Johnson
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
In recent years, Native American students in Minnesota have experienced the state’s widest equity gap. In response, a faculty advisor guided students through an immersive Indigenous research experience using the medicine wheel as a learning model focused on culturally relevant topics. Culturally relevant teaching uses methods and techniques that are building from a student’s interests, values, and strengths helps them to have a more meaningful educational experience by connecting home with school (Gay, 2000). Grounded in culturally relevant teaching theory, this approach connects students’ lived experiences to academic learning, making the exploration of equity gaps particularly meaningful for Indigenous students …
From Framework To Praxis: An Examination Of Integrated Comprehensive Systems (Ics) Equity Reform And Black Student Engagement, Heather L. Dunham
From Framework To Praxis: An Examination Of Integrated Comprehensive Systems (Ics) Equity Reform And Black Student Engagement, Heather L. Dunham
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
For over two decades, the Integrated Comprehensive Systems (ICS) framework (Frattura & Capper, 2007) has sought to promote systemic equity by addressing the organizational structures and practices that shape student outcomes. Despite its promise, few studies have examined ICS implementation in practice, particularly its impact on Black student engagement and academic success. This qualitative case study investigates a racially diverse Midwestern middle school that adopted ICS to shift outcomes for Black students. Grounded in the ICS framework—conceptually informed by Critical Race Theory and Disability Studies in Education—data from interviews, observations, and achievement records reveal that ICS can disrupt racialized routines, …
Re-Reading The World: Why Critical Literacy Must Accompany The “Back To Basics” Movement, Carl Bryan
Re-Reading The World: Why Critical Literacy Must Accompany The “Back To Basics” Movement, Carl Bryan
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
Recent literacy reforms in the United States have prioritized systematic phonics as part of the “science of reading,” backed by extensive evidence on the importance of phonemic awareness and decoding for early reading development. While these skills are essential, narrowing literacy to mechanics alone overlooks its broader cultural and civic purposes. Drawing on Freire’s (1970/2000) conception of literacy as both “reading the word and the world,” this paper argues for a balanced framework that integrates foundational instruction with comprehension, knowledge building, and critical literacy. Building on the work of Luke (2000) and Vasquez (2014), it positions literacy as both a …
Emotional Sobriety As Liberation: A Critical Pedagogy Of Resilience, Carl Bryan
Emotional Sobriety As Liberation: A Critical Pedagogy Of Resilience, Carl Bryan
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
This white paper extends the Reclaiming Model of trauma recovery by examining what follows critical consciousness when trauma persists and systems remain largely unchanged. Building on Reclaiming My Story, which framed healing as a Freirean act of reclaiming authorship through naming harm, dialogue, and praxis (Bryan, 2026), this paper addresses how reclaimed consciousness is sustained under ongoing emotional, relational, and structural strain. Drawing on critical pedagogy, trauma scholarship, and a first-person case narrative, it reframes post-trauma survival not as incomplete recovery but as ongoing praxis. The analysis challenges resolution-based and individualizing models of healing by conceptualizing emotional sobriety, relational regulation, …
Provocable Forgiveness In Noisy Brand--Consumer Systems:An Agent-Based Study Of Repeated Interaction, Tahere Ahmadiyan, Hamidreza Navidi, Behbod Keshavarzi
Provocable Forgiveness In Noisy Brand--Consumer Systems:An Agent-Based Study Of Repeated Interaction, Tahere Ahmadiyan, Hamidreza Navidi, Behbod Keshavarzi
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Repeated brand--consumer exchange is often treated as a managerial problem of loyalty, recovery, and trust. It can also be read as a small complex system: many local decisions about cooperation, retaliation, and forgiveness accumulate into market-level selection. This study uses that perspective to examine which relational rules survive when communication is imperfect. Eight canonical Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma strategies are translated into marketing archetypes and evaluated through round-robin tournaments, a six-level noise sweep, proportional-fitness ecological dynamics, and finite-population Moran invasion tests. The tournament leaderboard is calculated without same-strategy self-play, so that reported payoffs reflect inter-archetype competition rather than homogeneous self-coordination. At …
Dynamic Transaction Authorization Using Continuous Analysis Of Tokenized Behavioral Data, Sree Sitamahalakshmi Moguluru
Dynamic Transaction Authorization Using Continuous Analysis Of Tokenized Behavioral Data, Sree Sitamahalakshmi Moguluru
Defensive Publications Series
Static, point-in-time transaction validation methods may be susceptible to in-session fraud, such as account takeovers, and can impose friction on legitimate users. To support continuous transaction authorization, systems and methods can analyze tokenized behavioral data. On a user device (e.g., a smartphone, smart watch, or wearable device), hardware sensors can capture behavioral data that is converted into privacy-preserving tokens before transmission to a server. A server-side infrastructure may use these tokens to build a real-time behavioral model for a session. During a transaction, this model can be compared to a user's historical baseline to compute a dynamic confidence score. This …

Progressive Facial Swelling And Airway Symptoms Revealing A Deep Neck Abscess With Atypical Microbiology, Drew Knight, Hakam Sulaiman, Arash Bakian, Ilya Fonarov
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Deep neck abscesses have become less common in the antibiotic era; yet, they still pose major risks of morbidity and mortality if not addressed appropriately. Their proximity to the upper respiratory tract and mediastinal structures further exacerbates this risk. We present the case of a 56-year-old man with a medical history of type 2 diabetes mellitus, who exhibited a two-month history of recurrent left-sided facial edema, pain, and dysphagia. Computed tomography imaging confirmed a substantial fluid collection extending from the submandibular region into the mid-cervical area, from which aspiration yielded 110 mL of purulent material. Cultures indicated Cutibacterium acnes, …

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy (LVNC) is a rare genetic cardiomyopathy characterized by prominent trabeculations and deep recesses that predispose to arrhythmias and heart failure. We describe a 42-year-old man with persistent tachycardia and exertional fatigue found to have CTI-dependent atrial flutter with 2:1 conduction. Transesophageal echocardiography showed severe biventricular dysfunction with an ejection fraction of 15%, and cardiac MRI confirmed LVNC with a non-compacted to compacted ratio of 3.3. After successful ablation and normal coronary angiography, he was diagnosed with LVNC. This case highlights an unusual presentation of LVNC with typical atrial flutter and underscores the value of cardiac MRI …

Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) is a rare subtype of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies that can present with rhabdomyolysis. We report a 43-year-old woman with rapidly progressive proximal muscle weakness following a flu-like illness. Laboratory evaluation revealed markedly elevated creatine kinase (22,207 U/L) and transaminases, with positive anti-signal recognition particle (SRP) and Coxsackie B4 antibodies. Muscle biopsy demonstrated extensive necrosis, regeneration, and endomysial lymphocytic infiltration, confirming IMNM. The patient was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone, IVIG, and rituximab, followed by oral steroid taper and mycophenolate. At six-month follow-up, she showed significant clinical and biochemical improvement. This case highlights a potential viral-triggered autoimmune mechanism, …

Steroid-Responsive Encephalopathy Associated With Autoimmune Thyroiditis: A Case Fulfilling Definite Graus Criteria, Stephanie Ammari, Nawras Ibrahim, Sravani Karuchola, Samir Ouais
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Steroid-responsive encephalopathy associated with autoimmune thyroiditis (SREAT), also known as Hashimoto encephalopathy, is a rare immune-mediated neurological syndrome with an incidence of 2.1 per 100,000 and a 4:1 female predominance. Neurological manifestations are independent of thyroid status, occurring in 30–40% of euthyroid patients, and include cognitive impairment, confusion, seizures, and psychiatric symptoms. Diagnosis is challenging in the elderly, where symptoms overlap with dementia or delirium, with only 51 reported cases in patients aged ≥65 years. We describe a 70-year-old woman with autoimmune hypothyroidism and levothyroxine nonadherence who presented with progressive weakness, melena, dyspnea, and altered mental status complicated by obstructive …

Piperacillin-Induced Immune Hemolytic Anemia Masked By Intestinal Failure-Associated Liver Disease: A Case Report With Three Serial Exposures, Stephanie Ammari, Nawras Ibrahim, Khalid Mahmood
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Background: Drug-induced immune hemolytic anemia (DIIHA) secondary to piperacillin has an estimated incidence of 0.01–0.10% [1,2]. In patients with intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD), chronic conjugated hyperbilirubinemia obscures typical hemolytic markers [3,4].
Case Presentation: A 27-year-old woman with traumatic short bowel syndrome requiring total parenteral nutrition for 6 months, IFALD (baseline total bilirubin 2.5 mg/dL), and chronic kidney disease experienced three piperacillin-tazobactam exposures over two months. First exposure (12 days): hemolysis developed after drug discontinuation (primary sensitization). Second exposure: severe hemolysis occurred within 3 days (anamnestic response) with hemoglobin declining to 5.8 g/dL, undetectable haptoglobin, elevated LDH, reticulocytosis, and strongly …

Severe Multisystem Toxicity From Combination Ipilimumab And Nivolumab In Metastatic Melanoma: A Case Report, Bushra Amer, Sheetal Manerkar
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have transformed cancer therapy by enhancing antitumor immunity. Despite their remarkable efficacy in malignancies, particularly metastatic melanomas, the use of ICIs have been linked to life-threatening immune-related adverse events (irAEs) affecting several organ systems. Combination therapy with ipilimumab and nivolumab increases both efficacy and the risk of severe irAEs. We report a rare case of metastatic melanoma treated with combination ipilimumab and nivolumab, complicated by multisystem irAEs. The patient developed hepatitis, cholangitis, ocular toxicity, and neurologic progression, highlighting the severity and complexity of immune-mediated toxicities following dual checkpoint blockade. This case underscores the potential for severe, …

From Villi To Alveoli: Lung Involvement In Celiac Disease – A Narrative Review, Mateusz Marzec, Patrycja Cecha
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Background:
Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic, immune-mediated enteropathy triggered by gluten that affects about 1% of the population and may present with extraintestinal manifestations. Pulmonary complications are considered rare and are poorly characterized. Lane-Hamilton syndrome is the best described lung manifestation, but data suggests a broader spectrum of respiratory involvement.
Methods:
We performed a narrative review with structured search strategy of PubMed and Embase (January 1, 1970 – December 1, 2025) using the terms celiac/coeliac and lung, pulmonary, respiratory, hemoptysis, hemosiderosis, alveolar hemorrhage, interstitial lung disease, alveolitis, bronchiectasis …

Echocardiography In Stroke Management: Necessary Or Overused?, Nicole Ann Tesoro, Jasvin Kurundrayil Manha, Jerold Fleishman, Sumanth Bandaru
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Stroke remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, leading to the development of efficient and evidence-based management strategies. Echocardiography is a crucial diagnostic tool for identifying cardiac sources of embolism, particularly in cardioembolic and cryptogenic strokes, yet its routine use in all stroke patients remains controversial. While evidence-based guidelines recommend a patient-specific approach, rigid hospital quality metrics have incentivized widespread echocardiography, even in low-yield cases such as large artery atherosclerotic strokes. This disconnect raises concerns regarding cost-effectiveness, resource allocation, and potential over-testing, delaying discharges and prolonging hospital length of stay. A more tailored approach, focusing on guideline-driven indications, …

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Background
Liver transplantation remains the definitive treatment for end-stage liver disease (ESLD) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). While hepatitis C virus (HCV) was historically the leading indication for liver transplant, the introduction of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) has drastically reduced HCV-related ESLD. In contrast, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) have emerged as predominant causes of liver transplantation. This study evaluates racial and ethnic disparities in liver transplantation indications from 2004 to 2023 and projects future trends through to 2040.

Aim This study evaluates demographics, clinicopathological features, and mortality influencers among 16,466 US patients with ovarian cancer diagnosed between 2010 and 2017, focusing on CA 125 levels and racial disparities affecting outcomes.
Methods We analyzed SEER data for 16,466 patients diagnosed from 2010 to 2017. Demographic, clinical, overall mortality (OM), and cancer-specific mortality (CSM) variables were assessed. Factors with P < 0.1 on univariate Cox regression were entered into multivariate Cox models to identify independent prognostic factors, with hazard ratios greater than one indicating adverse prognosis.
Results Among 16,466 patients with ovarian cancer diagnosed between 2010 and 2017, most were aged 40–79 years and presented with distant-stage disease. The majority of patients were non-Hispanic White, followed by Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black patients. Serous carcinoma was the …

Background: Pneumococcal vaccination coverage among eligible adults in Japan remains suboptimal. This gap may be partly attributable to insufficient physician and patient education, as well as limited coordination in delivery of preventive care. Therefore, we conducted a hospital-based quality improvement project combining resident education with system-level workflow modifications to enhance pneumococcal vaccination rates.
Methods: A single-center quality improvement study was conducted at a teaching community hospital in Japan, comparing outcomes between pre-intervention and intervention periods. The intervention included resident education, patient educational materials, integration of vaccination status into admission documentation, discharge checklists, and weekly reminders. The primary outcome was the …

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Background: Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) is the second most common craniofacial anomaly with asymmetrical, congenital malformation. Treatment is challenging and requires interdisciplinary cooperation to restore function and facial esthetics. Objective: A CFM patient suffered from facial asymmetry, occlusal plane cant, malocclusion and severe obstructive sleep apnea, and a 3D surgical orthodontic treatment was planned. Case report: A 37-year-old male patient complained of small chin with deviation. Craniofacial microsomia grade IIa by Pruzansky system and S2A1T1 by SAT system was diagnosed. Clinical examination showed severe facial asymmetry, right microtia, chin deviation to right side 7.0 mm, occlusal plane cant, right Class …

Management Of Skeletal Class Iii Malocclusion With Deep Bite And Moderate Overjet Using Improved Super-Elastic Ti-Ni Alloy Wire (Isw), Wen-Hsuan Lin, Ching-Yu Yang, Yuan-Hou Chen, Jian-Hong Yu
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
A 20-year-old female presented with concerns about poor dental alignment and a tendency to bite on her lip easily. Clinical examination revealed a concave and brachy facial profile, accompanied by a deep overbite and a moderate overjet. Radiographic examination showed skeletal Class III with a low mandibular plane angle. Correction of the deep bite was achieved by using the Improved Super-elastic Ti-Ni alloy Wire (ISW) and Intermaxillary elastics (IMEs). To correct the moderate overjet, interproximal reduction (IPR), the Multi-bend Edgewise Archwire (MEAW) technique, and arch lengthening of the lower arch were applied. The active treatment duration took approximately 54 months, …
