Like Lady Godiva: Godiva's Fandom From Fiction To Activism, Elizabeth Reid Boyd May 2025

Like Lady Godiva: Godiva's Fandom From Fiction To Activism, Elizabeth Reid Boyd

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The legend of Lady Godiva, who famously rode naked through the streets of Coventry, veiled only by her long, flowing hair, has endured for centuries as a symbol of protest, sacrifice, and spectacle. According to the most popular version of the tale, Godiva pleaded with her husband, Lord Leofric of Mercia, to lift an oppressive tax that threatened to impoverish the people of Coventry. In response, Leofric issued a provocative challenge: he would revoke the tax only if she rode unclothed through the town. Godiva accepted, and in a gesture of defiance and compassion, undertook the ride. The townspeople, out …

Adaptation And Discovery In The Ethiopian Highlands: Testing Rules, Cryptic Shrews, And Patterns Of Montane Mammal Diversity, Evan W. Craig May 2025

Adaptation And Discovery In The Ethiopian Highlands: Testing Rules, Cryptic Shrews, And Patterns Of Montane Mammal Diversity, Evan W. Craig

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Montane landscapes of the Horn of Africa harbor exceptional but incompletely documented biodiversity. Focusing on rodents and shrews—the dominant but least studied of Ethiopia’s high-elevation fauna—this dissertation integrates repeat faunal surveys, genomic taxonomy, and phylogenetically informed modelling to clarify how small mammals distribute, diversify, and morphologically adapt across steep elevational gradients.

A century‐scale resurvey of Simien Mountains National Park (1927-2015) revealed significant upward range shifts for multiple species and a persistent mid-elevation richness peak, implicating warming temperatures as a driver of community reassembly. Museomics using genome-skimming and craniodental morphometrics subsequently uncovered a deeply divergent miniature shrew lineage within the Crocidura …

The White Elephant In The Classroom: Using Local History And Resource Pedagogies To Remove It, Dawn N. Colquitt-Anderson May 2025

The White Elephant In The Classroom: Using Local History And Resource Pedagogies To Remove It, Dawn N. Colquitt-Anderson

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Years of scholarship outline the benefits of asset-based pedagogy for all students, especially the culturally and linguistically diverse students who are now the majority student population in public schools. But there is scant research on how experienced in-service teachers modify their practices and beliefs to adequately prepare these students for 21st century leadership. This sequential mixed methods case study examined the efforts of elementary and middle school teachers as they grappled with personal, professional, and systemic barriers that arose as they worked to strengthen their cultural and community responsiveness by centering the local history of a historic great migration town.

Multilingual English Teaching: Challenges And Possibilities In The Secondary Mainstream Classroom, Vannessa Quintana Sarria

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines how multilingual English language teachers (MLETs) reshape mainstream secondary education through asset-based, linguistically inclusive pedagogies. Using an ethnographic, participatory design grounded in second-generation Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), the study investigates a Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) program at East Summer High (ESH), a public, four-year high school located northwest of Boston, Massachusetts. ESH serves approximately 1,394 students and offers a range of academic and vocational programs, including structured SEI pathways that support English Learners (ELs) at various proficiency levels, such as SEI-1, SEI-General Education, and SEI-Special Education. Over three years of immersive fieldwork, data sources include in-depth …

The Routledge Handbook Of Cultural Ecosystem Services, Pamela D. Mcelwee, Karen E. Allen, Rachelle K. Gould, Minna Hsu, Jun He

Open Access Fund Publications

The Routledge Handbook of Cultural Ecosystem Services provides an overview of Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES), which are the nonmaterial aspects of benefits that people derive from nature. These diverse and multifaceted contributions can include experiences, capabilities, and identities, among others. The Handbook addresses how these CES are valued, how they reflect human–nonhuman relationships, and what roles they can play in improved human well-being, ecosystem management, and trajectories towards sustainability.

This Handbook presents a wide array of perspectives on the roles CES can play in understanding relationships to nature, and on how those relationships might translate into policy. The Handbook includes …

Optimizing Frontline Therapy For Classical Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Mini-Review Of Pet-Directed Chemotherapy, Brentuximab-Based Regimens, And Checkpoint Inhibitor Combinations, Vasisht Karri, Christopher Reyes, Samir Dalia

Student Publications

Classical Hodgkin lymphoma is a highly curable malignancy, but long-term treatment-related toxicities remain a challenge, especially in young survivors. In recent years, treatment has shifted from traditional doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine regimens to novel approaches such as positron emission tomography-guided therapy, brentuximab vedotin-doxorubicin, vinblastine, dacarbazine (AVD), and checkpoint inhibitor combinations such as nivolumab (Nivo)-AVD. This review evaluates these three frontline strategies in terms of efficacy, toxicity, and their potential to personalize treatment and minimize late complications. Drawing from trials such as ECHELON-1, NIVAHL, SWOG S1826, and BREACH, we analyze current evidence, evaluate conflicting data, and propose considerations for tailoring …

The Pressure Points Of Professional Identity For Judges In The Modern Era, Charles G. Geyh May 2025

The Pressure Points Of Professional Identity For Judges In The Modern Era, Charles G. Geyh

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The duties core to the professional identity of a judge are encapsulated in an ethical directive at the literal forefront of the Model Code of Judicial Conduct, some variation of which all state and federal judiciaries have adopted. Rule 1.2 provides that “[a] judge shall act at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the independence, integrity, and impartiality of the judiciary[.]” This directive implicates three challenges, or pressure points, relevant to a judge’s identity: 1) insofar as judges begin their legal careers as practicing lawyers, when they ascend the bench their professional identities must transition from …

From Decriminalization To Social Legitimization: The Lived Experiences Of Non-Conforming Individuals In India, Heeya Datta May 2025

From Decriminalization To Social Legitimization: The Lived Experiences Of Non-Conforming Individuals In India, Heeya Datta

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores how queer and non-conforming individuals in urban India navigate, resist, and reimagine dominant norms of kinship, intimacy, and family. Drawing on 18 in-depth interviews, it examines the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in the aftermath of legal reforms such as the decriminalization of Section 377 and the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act. While these reforms mark symbolic progress, queer individuals continue to face social stigma, legal exclusions, and familial rejection. The study is divided into three chapters: the first analyzes the dual role of homosociality as both a space of refuge and constraint; the second investigates …

Mechanisms Of Placental Impairment And The Upregulation Of Fetuin-B During Maternal Undernourishment, Mia Camilliere May 2025

Mechanisms Of Placental Impairment And The Upregulation Of Fetuin-B During Maternal Undernourishment, Mia Camilliere

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

Proper nutrition is crucial during pregnancy to support fetal and placental development. Failure to meet these nutritional needs can result in adverse health outcomes for both mother and baby. Despite its high prevalence in underdeveloped countries, maternal undernourishment is a public health issue worldwide. There are several possible causes of maternal undernourishment, and these can occur alone or in combination, such as poor access to nutrition, hyperemesis gravidarum, and drug use. This condition can adversely affect placental development and function to the extent of placental insufficiency, perturbing the entire pregnancy. The placenta is responsible not only for hormonally and physically …

Jeepney Modernization Program: Agencies And Constraints Of Informal Transport Sector In Cebu City, Philippines, Katrina Lerma A. Rapada, Herald Shalom R. Vallente, Giena Marie U. Canoy

Journal of Global Awareness

In the quest to provide a better public transportation system in the Philippines, the government has implemented Department Order 2017-011, the major basis for the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program, which requires single jeepney operators to join transport cooperatives and limits jeepneys not older than 15 years to operate. However, up to the present, this policy initiative has yet to improve Cebu City's public transport system significantly, and it has already created various forms of exclusion. Anchored on Mayer’s (2014) theory on the problems of collective action and Mosca’s (1939) elite theory, this study assesses the collective agencies of jeepney …

Music As Medicine: The Impact Of Music On Pain Reported After Surgery, Anastasia Pike, Gregory T. Chesnut May 2025

Music As Medicine: The Impact Of Music On Pain Reported After Surgery, Anastasia Pike, Gregory T. Chesnut

Journal of Global Awareness

The impact of music on subjective reporting of pain and anxiety has been increasingly described in medical literature. Multimodal methods of alleviating postoperative pain and anxiety, including the use of live or recorded music in perioperative settings, have been shown to improve patient-reported pain levels and, in some studies, to result in decreased opioid usage. The overprescription of opioids after surgery can contribute to long-term abuse or trafficking of medications, and the use of non-opioid medications, alternative methods of pain relief, and environmental/auditory stimuli offer new mechanisms to promote safe opioid prescribing while improving both pain control and patient wellbeing. …
