Abstract

The decisions of private property expropriation for the public interest, issued by administrative authorities, are among the most important practical applications, that clarify the nature of the relationship between administrative authorities and individuals, as the principle of public benefit is used as a justification for the expropriation of private property against the will of the individual. The aim of this study is to investigate the legality of decisions to expropriate private property for the public interest. Such decisions are closely related to a basic human right (the right of ownership), which necessitates examining the meaning of public interest, and …

Augmenting Tornado Detection And Tracking With Crowdsourced Media, Mel Bass, Daniel V. Klein

Defensive Publications Series

Tornados that impact a location have multiple different effects, not all of which are captured by video footage or other data sources. Such media can include video footage (or screenshots) from storm chases, vehicle cameras, outdoor cameras, etc. obtained from devices where the users permit use of the video footage for storm detection. Additionally, data from lightning activity, pressure sensors, power grid anomalies, etc. can also be obtained and …

Bridging The Gap: College Readiness And The Influence Of School Leadership, Sharonda Pruitt, Sharon Ross, Stephanie Atchley, Jesse Brock

School Leadership Review

This quantitative study examined the relationship between school leadership experience and African American students’ completion of Texas Education Agency-approved college readiness courses. Using 2021–2022 data from the Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR) in Region 7, the study analyzed average years of experience for principals and assistant principals across high schools. Pearson correlation analysis, with Holm correction and effect size calculations, was used to explore potential relationships. Results showed no significant correlation between principal experience and course completion, but a statistically significant positive correlation was found for assistant principal experience (r = .26, p = .034), indicating a small effect size. …

New Perspectives On Media And Culture May 2025

New Perspectives On Media And Culture

Communication Research Trends

Media studies were born in the 1930s and 1940s with the popular assumption that film and broadcasting have enormous power to sway voters, shape the minds of children and direct public opinion. By the late 1950s, however, the cumulative research showed that the media, in themselves, are rarely the sole cause of aggressive behaviour, conversions or other personal changes. Media are definitely somehow influential, but media effects are a complex process mingled with the influence of family, friend groups, and the broader socio-cultural environment.

In the search for more nuanced explanations of media influence during the 1960s and 1970s, researchers …

The Crisis In Public Service Broadcasting May 2025

The Crisis In Public Service Broadcasting

Communication Research Trends

Main issue abstract:

In early 1987 the Director-General of the BBC, Alasdair Milne, was forced to resign; his successor was Michael Checkland, who had been in charge of the Corporation's financial strategy. Milne had begun his career as a programme maker, Checkland as an accountant. Thus, symbolically, a cultural institution dedicated to serving the public by providing information, education and entertainment, acknowledged the supremacy of economics.

Across the globe public broadcasting is being forced to come to terms with demands that it be more entrepreneurial in spirit and give better 'value for money'. It is accused of giving its audience …

Marveling At The Art Of Language: Centering Adolescents In Developing Disciplinary Literacy For Ela, Christina M. Ponzio

Michigan Reading Journal

This article explores how we invite adolescents to be insiders in the discipline of ELA by inquiring together into the art of language. I begin with a brief overview of the varied perspectives, research and frameworks about the importance of apprenticing students’ into disciplinary literacy in ELA. Next, I share examples of authentic contexts, purposes, and audiences for inquiring into the art of language with adolescents across a school year and zoom into one unit through the lens of Moje’s (2015) 5E framework for designing inquiries that foster the development of students’ disciplinary literacy. I conclude with a “before and …

From Theory To Practice: How Job-Embedded Professional Learning Labs Support Implementation And Application, Megan Kortlandt, Samantha Keesling, Asha Williams, Jay Haffner

Michigan Reading Journal

Educators in any role know that supporting application of new learning is critical. Classroom teachers ground their instruction in the gradual release of responsibility, problem-based learning, and other frameworks that support students in taking on new learning themselves. Similarly, it’s long been understood that, in order for professional learning to be effective for adults, it must support educators in transferring new learning to practice (Darling-Hammond et al, 2017). Yet most professional learning frameworks still involve large groups that often take place in settings removed from the students and settings where educators apply the learning. Though they may ask participants to …

The Dangers Of Teacher Deficit Thinking And Language: Practices To Disrupt The “They’Re So Low” Literacy Paradigm, Heather Rottermond, Bridget Regan May 2025

The Dangers Of Teacher Deficit Thinking And Language: Practices To Disrupt The “They’Re So Low” Literacy Paradigm, Heather Rottermond, Bridget Regan

Michigan Reading Journal

Teacher deficit thinking, a deeply ingrained paradigm in education, attributes students' academic challenges to their backgrounds, families, and cultures rather than examining systemic inequities. This mindset fosters low expectations, reinforces stereotypes, and limits student success. Research indicates that deficit-oriented teachers believe students must be "fixed" to achieve academic success, perpetuating harmful educational practices. Furthermore, data-driven decision-making, particularly in high-stakes testing environments, can exacerbate deficit thinking by framing students in terms of their weaknesses rather than strengths. Studies reveal that teachers often use labels such as "low" or "deficient," reinforcing biased instructional decisions that fail to leverage students' existing knowledge and …
