During surgical procedures requiring general anesthesia, an airway device is often placed to allow for adequate ventilation of the patient. Most commonly, endotracheal tubes (ETTs) or laryngeal mask airways (LMAs) are placed by the anesthesia provider. The difference between these two methods of ventilation is based on the location; ETTs pass through the glottis into the trachea, whereas the LMA sits above the glottis. This difference in placement may lend benefit to LMAs over ETTs, one of which includes a faster removal of the airway device. That is, after the surgical procedure is completed, there is a period when the …

INTRODUCTION: Anesthesia providers are often called upon to assist with other providers during can't intubate, can't ventilate (CICV) scenarios. The current availability of doses of sugammadex sufficient to provide emergent reversal of neuromuscular blockade in an operating room environment requires visits to multiple operating rooms at our institution. The Anesthesiology Department at OhioHealth Doctors Hospital sought to evaluate the practicality of administering a rescue dose of sugammadex (16 mg/kg) in a CICV scenario. The current storage of sugammadex is six 200 mg vials maximum per operating room, which would provide insufficient dosing for emergent reversal dosing for most adult patients. …

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy surgery offers a potential cure for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), yet surgery is underutilized. An estimated 5% of patients with DRE undergo long-term EEG monitoring (LTM) annually, the requisite first step of evaluation for surgical candidacy. Much of the variation in LTM referral may be attributable to individual neurologist practice rather than patient characteristics. We explored neurologist behaviors and practices in epilepsy surgery referral to guide future interventions to expand patient access to surgery.
METHODS: This qualitative interview study recruited neurologists who treated adults with epilepsy. Interviews were grounded in the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) of behavior change to …

The Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network for Intermediate Phenotypes (B-SNIP) created psychosis Biotypes based on neurobiological measurements in a multi-ancestry sample. These Biotypes cut across DSM diagnoses of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder with psychosis. Two recently developed post hoc ancestry adjustment methods of Polygenic Risk Scores (PRSs) generate Ancestry-Adjusted PRSs (AAPRSs), which allow for PRS analysis of multi-ancestry samples. Applied to schizophrenia PRS, we found the Khera AAPRS method to show superior portability and comparable prediction accuracy as compared with the Ge method. The three Biotypes of psychosis disorders had similar AAPRSs across ancestries. In genomic analysis of Biotypes, 12 genes, …

Determining ultimate loads and platform motions is essential for both survivability and cost-effectiveness in the development of floating offshore wind. Current design standards utilise time-consuming methodologies that rely on irregular sea state simulations to determine design loads. Design waves offer the potential to accelerate the design process through the simulation of shorter wave profiles that specifically target extreme responses. However, it is not well understood how reliable design waves are for floating devices. Using a mid-fidelity numerical tool, this paper explores the characteristic loads produced by four design wave methods for a semi-submersible floating wind device over a wide range …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Density is a fundamental property of plastics and is particularly significant in determining the transport and fate of waste plastics that enter aquatic systems. However, densities are rarely determined in the environmental literature and values employed for modelling or impacts are often unsourced or derived from secondary databases. In this study, we employ helium displacement pycnometry to determine the skeletal densities of non-porous plastics whose polymer composition had been established from manufacturer's data, resin codes or Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. Two independent, collaborative laboratories, providing measurements within 3.5 % of each other and with precisions of <1 % (as relative standard deviation), analysed a total of 42 virgin, consumer and environmental plastics consisting of ten common polymer types. Measured densities of plastics in all categories, and most notably for polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride, were often outside the ranges reported by a comprehensive online resource. Possible reasons for discrepancies include the occurrence of dense additives (evaluated by X-ray fluorescence analysis), the presence of inaccessible microscopic pores below a laminated surface, contamination of the main polymer by a secondary one, and structural changes on weathering. Regardless of precise causes, most results suggest that individual polymers have a broader range of densities than is generally published or considered in the literature. Accordingly, and in particular where buoyancy is critical, more precise, sample-specific measurements are recommended.

Effects Of Vertical Reinforcement On The Shear Performance Of Uhpc Deep Beams With Synthetic And Steel Fibres, Hossein Mirzaaghabeik, Sanjay Kumar Shukla, Nuha S. Mashaan
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study examines the shear behaviour of ultra-high-performance concrete deep beams (UHPC-DBs) reinforced with three fibre types: 2 % hooked-end (HE) steel fibres, 0.76 % 5D steel fibres, and 0.11 % Forta-Ferro (FF) synthetic fibres. It evaluates the effects of fibre type, fibre content, vertical web reinforcement (ρsv), and shear span-to-depth ratio (λ) on shear capacity. Load-deflection curves, crack patterns, and ρsv strain were analysed, and the optimal ρsv was determined using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to maximise shear capacity while minimising costs. Findings reveal that, compared to specimens without ρsv, those with ρsv = 0.38 % exhibit …

Handling Socio-Institutional Traps–Inertia Towards Australia’S Resilient International Development Aid Programs In The Solomon Islands, Mark Opoku Amankwa, Kwadwo Adusei-Asante, Alina Novak
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study critically examines how donor’s aid delivery approach, entrenched socio-institutional dynamics, and the Solomon Islands’ complex political economy create persistent barriers to Australia’s aid programming. Through a desktop research approach, institutional trap–inertia theory is applied to analyze how Australia’s aid efforts and political structures perpetuate aid inertia. The study critiques both Australia’s aid delivery approach and the internal governance challenges in a cohesive society of the SI, highlighting their intertwined roles in impeding Australia’s aid programming. The article proffers context-driven, locally adaptive strategies aimed at overcoming institutional traps and fostering more resilient and effective aid interventions.

Testing Autonomous Driving Systems (ADSs) is crucial for ensuring their safety, reliability, and performance. Despite numerous testing methods available that can generate diverse and challenging scenarios to uncover potential vulnerabilities, these methods often treat ADS as a black-box, primarily focusing on identifying system-level failures like collisions or near-misses without pinpointing the specific modules responsible for these failures. This lack of root causes understanding for the failures hinders effective debugging and subsequent system repair. Furthermore, current approaches often fall short in generating violations that adequately test the individual modules of an ADS from a system-level perspective, such as perception, prediction, planning, …

Large Language Models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable success in various applications, particularly in code-related tasks such as code generation and program repair, setting new performance benchmarks. However, the extensive use of large training corpora raises concerns about whether these achievements stem from genuine understanding or mere memorization of training data—a question often overlooked in current research. This paper aims to study the memorization issue within LLM-based program repair by investigating whether the correct patches generated by LLMs are the result of memorization. The key challenge lies in the absence of ground truth for confirming memorization, leading to various ad-hoc methods …
