Team Versus Player? A Study Of Baseball Salary Arbitration And The Arbitrator Exchangeability Hypothesis, Devan Fink Jun 2023

Team Versus Player? A Study Of Baseball Salary Arbitration And The Arbitrator Exchangeability Hypothesis, Devan Fink

Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses

I assess the decisions of arbitrators in Major League Baseball (MLB) salary arbitration hearings under the arbitrator exchangeability hypothesis. Salary arbitration occurs when a player, typically one with more than three, but fewer than six, years of major league service, cannot reach an agreement with his team on a contract for a given year. When this happens, the player and team go to an arbitration hearing. In a hearing, each side presents oral arguments in front of a panel of three independent arbitrators, proclaiming why the arbitrators should rule in their favor. The arbitrators then either decide to award the …

Making Pla(Y)Ces: Softening The City Through Play, Shivani Pinapotu Jun 2023

Making Pla(Y)Ces: Softening The City Through Play, Shivani Pinapotu

Masters Theses

Cities that grow naturally over time integrate spaces of gathering that allow for serendipitous happenstance. However, the cities we design today instruct and codify through intentional planning and design; they assign use, hardening specific function to place. Such strategies lead to spaces devoid of spirit, inculcating in city-dwellers to a sense of disconnect from the city.

In contrast to this, the places we make as children, express our intuitive, direct, and unselfconscious relationships with space and one other. These spaces embody softness through their malleability and adaptability, borrowing from the world around them and imbuing the ordinary with imagination. …

Perspectives Of Women Police Officers In The Union Territory Of Puducherry, India, Chemmalar S. Jun 2023

Perspectives Of Women Police Officers In The Union Territory Of Puducherry, India, Chemmalar S.

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women face unprecedented challenges of gender inequality despite representing half of the world’s population, yet increasingly, they are entering physically demanding professions such as policing. Underlying police culture is a normative power structure defined by hegemonic masculinity. Discrimination, sexual harassment, and inadequate maternity and parental leave are some of the issues that women police officers face. Despite these limitations, there is a growing demand for women police officers. This study contributes to a better understanding of the issues that women police officers face in their work. It also sheds light on the psychology of women police officers and their approach …

Experiences Of Students In Degree-Seeking Proprietary Nursing Programs In South Florida, Yvanessa Georges Jun 2023

Experiences Of Students In Degree-Seeking Proprietary Nursing Programs In South Florida, Yvanessa Georges

Dissertations

Students of proprietary programs perform significantly lower in the NCLEX than students of other programs. This is more significant in the state of Florida where the NCLEX pass rate is below the national average. Although the discrepancy in the first-time pass rates is well documented in the statistics, the reason for this is unclear, and there is paucity in the literature addressing this phenomenon.

The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of nursing students attending degree-seeking proprietary programs in South Florida.

Use Of A Standardized Tracheostomy Patient Simulation To Evaluate Student Clinical Communication Skills, Amanda Stead, Jordan Tinsley, Kerry Mandulak, Paul Michael, Helene Deiner Jun 2023

Use Of A Standardized Tracheostomy Patient Simulation To Evaluate Student Clinical Communication Skills, Amanda Stead, Jordan Tinsley, Kerry Mandulak, Paul Michael, Helene Deiner

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Simulation is a valid pedagogical tool used to teach students, observe student clinical skills, and to assess clinical competencies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a lack of medical speech-language pathology placements required graduate programs to re-examine clinical training. Simulation has proven useful in providing an alternative and safe learning modality. Standardized patients, which are one simulation modality, provide increased standardization and higher fidelity than medical manikins. This is particularly true in the context of both student learning and demonstration of clinical communication skills (CCS) within a simulated learning environment where the simulated patient can interact authentically with the student clinician. CCS …

Playing The Policy Game: Basic Knowledge And Skills For Effective Policy Process Participation, Marcus D. Mauldin Jun 2023

Playing The Policy Game: Basic Knowledge And Skills For Effective Policy Process Participation, Marcus D. Mauldin

Open Textbooks

Many of us have likely heard the expression “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Yet, it is the people who are often excluded from the public policy process. Citizen engagement is typically reactive rather than proactive and passive as opposed to active. Voting and protesting are not the only ways that governments hear the voices of the people. Voting allows citizens to choose individuals who represent their interests, yet their interests are not always represented in ways they desire. Protesting brings attention to issues but doesn’t always lead to problems being solved. This book aims to …

Ready.Gov: Who’S Ready, Really? Examining Principles Of Inclusivity And Universal Design In Emergency Management And Disaster Preparedness Public Information Websites, Alicia Mason, Sakshi Bhati

Faculty Submissions

Nearly 20 years ago, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security launched Ready.gov, a national public service advertising campaign designed to educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies such as natural and technological disasters. To date, little is known about the accessibility and adaptability of this information for vulnerable populations including persons with disabilities (PwDs) and those with limited English proficiency (LEP). This computer-automated analysis seeks (1) to determine the general web, mobile and language accessibility of state websites which extend and/or amplify the Ready.gov national campaign goals, (2) to evaluate the document accessibility of downloadable emergency …

Corridor-Wide Surveillance Using Unmanned Aircraft Systems Phase Ii: Freeway Incident Detection Using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Part A), Ivette Cruzado, Alberto M. Figueroa-Medina, David R. González, Didier M. Valdés, Luz G. Rivera-Pérez, Bryan E. Ruiz-Hernández

Research Reports

During the second phase of this study, the team collected field data with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at different elevations and distances from the road to analyze the performance of a background subtraction algorithm for vehicle detection. Validation analyses were carried out and their results indicated that a detection rate with an accuracy of up to 92% can be reached using the background subtraction algorithm. The results of the ANOVA test confirmed that the drone’s distance from the road was the only main factor associated with vehicle detection percentage (at the 95% confidence level). It was also determined that, depending …

Pavement Condition Survey Using Drone Technology, Lerose Lane, Dingxin Cheng Jun 2023

Pavement Condition Survey Using Drone Technology, Lerose Lane, Dingxin Cheng

Mineta Transportation Institute

Timely repairs of pavement defects are essential in protecting both public road and highway systems. Identification of pavement distresses is necessary for planning pavement repairs. This has previously been performed by engineers surveying the roadways visually in the field. As drone usage has progressed, it has become clear that drones are a valuable tool to enhance visual documentation, improve project communication, and provide various data for processing. The use of drone technology has improved both the speed and accuracy of capturing data. Available software has allowed the data to be processed and analyzed in an office environment. This report summarizes …

Drop Test Release Mechanism, Sophie M. Getty, Matthew A. Tichenor, Nash W. Levy, Connor D. Dilloughery Jun 2023

Drop Test Release Mechanism, Sophie M. Getty, Matthew A. Tichenor, Nash W. Levy, Connor D. Dilloughery

Mechanical Engineering

Many boxes for shipping undergo drop tests by the manufacturer to ensure their durability. Certain constraints are necessary to successfully carry out these tests such as not damaging the box prior to the drop and maintaining consistency throughout every drop.

Our team has designed a Drop Test Release Mechanism that addresses these constraints. It provides repetitive drops for different objects that vary in shape and size such as small electronics or parts. This device utilizes a soft-clamping mechanism that can release an object with minimal force applied onto it prior to drop. A frame made of 80/20 was designed to …

A Resource Guide For Historic Sundown Town Resolutions, Zoning Code Updates, And General Plan Policies, Anna Rago Jun 2023

A Resource Guide For Historic Sundown Town Resolutions, Zoning Code Updates, And General Plan Policies, Anna Rago

City and Regional Planning

James W. Loewen’s book Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism, released in 2005, calls out cities across the United States for their historically discriminatory practices of excluding Black and other non-white individuals from living within city borders, either through formal exclusionary policies or informal methods. Cities often enforced this exclusionary practice through violence and intimidation, leading to “all-white” communities throughout the United States. The belief was that these communities should be “sundown” or “sunset” towns, where people of color were not allowed after dark. Loewen’s book and the following movement awakened individuals, companies, and entire cities to take …

Impeachment Vs. Indictment: How To Handle Criminality In The Executive Branch, Tiffany R. Murphy Jun 2023

Impeachment Vs. Indictment: How To Handle Criminality In The Executive Branch, Tiffany R. Murphy

Denver Law Review

Whether a sitting president can be prosecuted while in office has been a debated question with no clear answer. During Watergate and the Whitewater investigations, special and independent counsels struggled to decide whether to indict a sitting president. On one side, the Department of Justice (DOJ) guidelines prohibited indictment, on the other, prosecutors were concerned with potential harm to the rule of law if there was no indictment. In most circumstances, a president who engaged in criminal activities should face impeachment, as the Constitution mandates, rather than be subject to criminal proceedings while in office. The only exception is if …

Standing Back And Standing Down: Citizen Non-Cooperation And Police Non-Intervention As Causes Of Justice Failures And Crime, Paul H. Robinson, Jeffrey Seaman, Muhammad Sarahne Jun 2023

Standing Back And Standing Down: Citizen Non-Cooperation And Police Non-Intervention As Causes Of Justice Failures And Crime, Paul H. Robinson, Jeffrey Seaman, Muhammad Sarahne

Hofstra Law Review

The article discusses the failures of the American justice system to find and punish offenders for the majority of serious crimes. It highlight the low clearance and conviction rates for crimes such as murder, rape, and assault. It further argues that these failures of justice have practical consequences on crime rates and also disproportionately affect racial minorities and low-income communities.

Phantom Shootings, Allan Ambris

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This capstone is a website designed to critique NYC Open Data reporting with respect to shootings through a series of visualizations and discoveries. The NYPD Shooting Incidents datasets (Historic and Year to Date) introduce themselves to the user by claiming to be a “list of every shooting incident that occurred in NYC.” The supplied documentation reveals that this is not the case.

After understanding the supporting materials, there are still undisclosed truths. My exploration of the data revealed that a single victim may be represented across multiple entries. Additionally, multiple victims may be represented by a single entry. It is …

The Fourth Amendment Without Police, Shawn E. Fields Jun 2023

The Fourth Amendment Without Police, Shawn E. Fields

University of Chicago Law Review

What role will the Fourth Amendment play in a world without police? As academics, activists, and lawmakers explore alternatives to traditional law enforcement, it bears asking whether the amendment primarily tasked with regulating police investigations would also regulate postpolice public safety agencies. Surprisingly, the answer is often no. Courts are reluctant to recognize protections from government searches or seizures outside criminal investigations, and they are even more reluctant to require probable cause or a warrant for such conduct. Thus, by removing most public safety functions outside the criminal sphere, abolitionists also move intrusive government conduct outside these traditional strictures and …

Black And Blue Police Arbitration Reforms, Michael Z. Green Jun 2023

Black And Blue Police Arbitration Reforms, Michael Z. Green

Faculty Scholarship

The racial justice protests that engulfed the country after seeing a video of the appalling killing of a Black male, George Floyd, by a Minnesota police officer in 2020 has led to a tremendous number of questions about dealing with racial issues in policing. Similar concerns arose a little more than fifty years ago when police unions gained power to respond to the civil rights protests occurring during those times by establishing strong protections for their officers in light of brutality claims. This rhythmic progression of protests and union responses is destined to continue without any lasting reforms focused on …

Risky Routes: Modified Personal Vehicles, Public Safety, And Postal Services Under The Federal Tort Claims Act, Mary J. Smith Jun 2023

Risky Routes: Modified Personal Vehicles, Public Safety, And Postal Services Under The Federal Tort Claims Act, Mary J. Smith

Missouri Law Review

Who says the holiday spirit ever goes out of season? It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas year-round on many doorsteps as packages from online retailers pile up, and postal carriers share an element of Santa’s stress: timely delivery. In 2021, the United States Postal Service (“USPS”) delivered roughly 128.9 billion pieces of mail across 233,171 mail routes. Demand for e-goods is at an all-time high, and the pressure to manage the demand might lead to a prioritization of success over safety. Unlike their urban counterparts, rural USPS offices are often unequipped to handle high volumes of delivery …
