International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(4): 285-297, 2024. Tactical populations face increased risk on the job, and it is known that firefighters have high levels of cardiac-related death. Aerobic fitness is a modifiable cardiac risk factor, but many fire stations lack the proper equipment to easily assess aerobic fitness levels of their firefighters. Additionally, many fire stations lack wellness programs to hold firefighters accountable for maintaining their fitness levels. Purpose: We assessed the validity of the submaximal 6-minute walk test (6MWT) as a measure of aerobic capacity compared to a maximal treadmill test and the submaximal Gerkin protocol. Methods: Twenty-four …

How The Physical, Social, And Psychological Environment Impacts Border Security, John J. Smietana Jr. Feb 2024

How The Physical, Social, And Psychological Environment Impacts Border Security, John J. Smietana Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is a theory of crime control that posits that crime can be mitigated by shaping the physical, psychological, and social environment to prevent the meeting of perpetrators and victims. Over several decades, the United States applied the principles of CPTED to the United States-Mexico border in San Diego to secure the international border. Despite the sovereign right to secure the international border, border security became a divisive and emotionally charged topic in the United States. Studies on the effectiveness of border security were qualitative and humanitarian, describing how border security negatively impacted certain groups …

Servant Leadership: The Change Needed In Law Enforcement, Shane H. Shetler Feb 2024

Servant Leadership: The Change Needed In Law Enforcement, Shane H. Shetler

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Servant leadership is a moral-based form of leadership in which leaders place the well-being of followers before their own (Canavesi & Minelli, 2022). It is a theory that has gained increased notoriety over the past several decades. Despite this, there remains a limited amount of empirical research on it and its potential benefits. However, several professions have adopted it, and their results have been positive. Leadership change is needed in many professions, and law enforcement is no exception. The policing profession faces many challenges, such as recruiting quality candidates and retaining existing personnel. Furthermore, the challenges plaguing policing also exert …

National Regulatory Framework For Autonomous Vehicles: Why The United States Must Look Abroad To Find Answers, Taylor K. Hainley Feb 2024

National Regulatory Framework For Autonomous Vehicles: Why The United States Must Look Abroad To Find Answers, Taylor K. Hainley

Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law

Automation is in every aspect of our lives. Autonomous cars, or ‘self- driving cars,’ dominate today’s headlines. There is just one problem: the United States’ legislative infrastructure is not suited for these autonomous cars to become commonplace on the roads. The United States’ fractured system results in a maze of state laws that make it difficult for manufacturers to comply. Other countries, like Germany and Singapore, have enacted systems to make the testing and implementation of autonomous cars more efficient. This Note argues that the United States should follow Germany and Singapore’s models by modifying the definition of “driver” and …
