An Analysis Of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services And Human Error Contributors To Accidents, Paige Lawton
An Analysis Of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services And Human Error Contributors To Accidents, Paige Lawton
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) is a growing industry that provides a vital service to transport critically ill or injured patients to healthcare facilities. This growth has come with an increase in rates of HEMS crashes and fatalities. Certain types of events commonly precede HEMS accidents such as continued flight into deteriorating weather conditions, night, and self-induced pressure, to name a few. Given that these causes and contributing factors can be seen time and again within HEMS accidents, the need arises for additional analysis of the human factors that play a role in accidents. This study addresses this need through …
The Philosophy Of Incarceration And Punishment And Its Evolvement. Is It Enough?, Katherine Sebok
The Philosophy Of Incarceration And Punishment And Its Evolvement. Is It Enough?, Katherine Sebok
Capstone Projects – Politics and Government
This research project explores the evolution of incarceration philosophies and their disconnect from outdated prison infrastructure in the United States, with a focus on Illinois. From ancient civilizations’ reliance on retributive justice to the modern era’s emphasis on rehabilitation, punishment practices have evolved, yet many facilities remain stuck in the past. The “tough-on-crime” era deepened the divide, leading to overcrowding and neglect. While recent reforms prioritize rehabilitation, progress is hindered by outdated facilities. Illinois’ plans to demolish and rebuild Logan and Stateville Correctional Centers offer renewed hope, but the lengthy process requires significant investment and commitment from all involved parties.

Development Of The Roadway Pothole Management Program, Dingxin Cheng
Mineta Transportation Institute
Addressing the issue of potholes is a primary concern for maintaining urban infrastructure. The research team has developed a prototype pothole management program. The program includes a mobile application and two machine learning models. The mobile app enables users to upload images of potholes, report relevant information, and provide driving directions to the pothole location. With the help of this application, the user can seamlessly capture images of the potholes, record pertinent information, and submit the data for necessary action. The mobile application is an essential tool in the Pothole Management Program (PMP), as it enhances the program's efficiency, effectiveness, …

A Criminological Analysis Of The “White Supremacy To Anti-Immigrant Violence Pathway”, Ida Oesteraas
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
White supremacy consists of intricate ideologies, systems, privileges, and personal beliefs that result in unequal outcomes based on race in various aspects of life, such as wealth, freedom, health, and happiness (Belew & Gutiérrez, 2021). This dissertation explores the manifestation of white supremacy across various societal levels and its consequent harm and violence against people of color, immigrants, and particularly immigrants of color from Latin America. Here, I coin the term “white supremacy to anti-immigrant violence pathway” to examine how white supremacy has intertwined with our institutions and society, demonstrating how the exclusion and policing of immigrants of color sustain …

The press and democratic life are two inseparable things. The existence of the press has a crucial role in conveying information, providing education to the public, and as a means of social control. Freedom of the press is not only recognized internationally, but every country is obliged to provide legal protection for it. The urgency of this research from a constitutional law perspective is that the press is the fourth pillar of democracy (the fourth of estate). This issue is discussed to discover the similarities and differences in press law provisions between Indonesia and Australia as well as to improve, …

Evaluation Of Flooding Disaster Risk Initiatives In Vulnerable Homeless Communities, Nicholas W. O'Clair
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Homeless individuals, who have limited resources and lack stable lodging, are particularly vulnerable during disasters, further jeopardizing their already precarious health conditions. By examining the effectiveness of existing preparedness and response strategies on the readiness of homeless individuals during flood events, insights can be gained to enhance emergency operations. The purpose of the study was to investigate the experiences and vulnerabilities of homeless populations in a northeastern U.S. city with the goal of promoting inclusivity and resilience. Research questions involved understanding knowledge of dangers of flooding disasters; disaster preparedness, response, and recovery; and how current public promotion practices of disaster …

Ecological Factors And Minority Young Adults’ Trust In Law Enforcement, Jason Boswell
Ecological Factors And Minority Young Adults’ Trust In Law Enforcement, Jason Boswell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Throughout the past decade, studies have shown that the relationship between police organizations and community members has developed mistrust as more citizens begin to document misconduct by law enforcement officers. Studies have also proven that community members trust the police when they feel the police are fair and just. Distrust of law enforcement undermines the legitimacy of police officers, and without this trust legitimacy, police officers lose their ability and authority to perform their jobs effectively. To help bridge the gap between minority communities and law enforcement agencies, this qualitative phenomenological study was conducted to examine the trust within law …

Production V Conservation: A Policy Dilemma In The Tree Clearing Debate In Queensland, Australia, J C. Scanlan, E J. Turner
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A process for developing policy for tree clearing that meets the competing goals of conservation and production has been followed. There were two levels at which policy was developed. An overall Statewide policy outlined general targets to meet commitments of the Queensland Government. Local guidelines were developed by a large number of groups containing representatives of government and interested conservation movement and industry representatives. The policy and the local guidelines are an important part of the process used to assess applications for permits to clear woody vegetation.

Gone Smishing: An Integration Of Decision-Making And Protection Motivation In The Context Of Identity Theft Victimization, Taylor S. Fisher
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Methods of obtaining sensitive information from Internet users have evolved consistently as technology has advanced and millions of mobile device users communicate through text (SMS) messaging daily, making them a target for smishing attacks. Smishing (short for SMS phishing) is a form of cybercrime where an offender will send fraudulent text messages attempting to gather sensitive information or convince the user to click on a malicious link. These messages often appear legitimate and rely on tactics like convincing users that immediate action needs to be taken. Smishing has become so widespread that in 2020, the Texas Attorney General issued a …

Nebraska’S Medicaid Expansion: An Interesting Rural-Urban Divide, H. Jason Combs, Paul R. Burger
Nebraska’S Medicaid Expansion: An Interesting Rural-Urban Divide, H. Jason Combs, Paul R. Burger
The Geographical Bulletin
Initially established in 1965, Medicaid was expanded in 2010 to include the working poor. The U.S. Supreme Court in 2012, however, ruled that the provision of the Affordable Care Act requiring states to expand Medicaid was unconstitutional. This made it a state option whether or not to expand Medicaid. In Nebraska, the approved expansion is projected to cover approximately 90,000 Nebraskans who are 19 to 64 years of age with annual incomes 138 percent of federal poverty level. In conjunction with current Medicaid expenses, expansion is expected to make the program the second largest general fund appropriation in the state. …
