Mitigating The Impacts Of Future Climate Change On Urban Infrastructure In Alabama Through Updating Precipitation Intensity-Duration-Frequency (Idf) Curves, Kofi Ntow Opare
All ETDs from UAB
Climate change is set to profoundly impact urban infrastructure, causing increased flooding and storm damage, necessitating the reevaluation and adaptation of design methodologies to account for increasing precipitation extremes. This dissertation aims to enhance the resilience of urban infrastructure in Alabama by updating Precipitation Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves, which are crucial for designing stormwater management systems, drainage networks, and flood control structures. Traditional IDF curves, derived from historical rainfall data, operate under the assumption of stationarity, an assumption increasingly invalidated by climate change. This research employs the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution and compares the efficacy of L-moments and Generalized Maximum …
Evaluating The Financial Strain Of Pediatric Firearm Injuries On Children’S Hospitals: The Moderating Effects Of State Firearm Legislation And Geographic Setting, Perry Ann Reed
All ETDs from UAB
This thesis evaluates the financial strain of pediatric firearm injuries on children’s hospitals, with a focus on the moderating effects of geographic setting and state firearm legislation. The purpose of the research is to investigate how the stringency of state firearm laws influences the financial impact of such injuries and to examine how the association between gun law stringency and pediatric injuries differs between rural and urban hospital settings. The study employs a multi-level regression analysis, utilizing data from children’s hospitals across different geographic locations. The results provide partial support for the hypotheses. Contrary to expectations, pediatric firearm injuries did …

Urban Security And The Crisis Of Values In A Risk Society: Elements For Reflection And Research, Bahamou Abdelilah, Abdelghani Chafik
Journal of Maya Heritage
Abstract: Urban security has become one of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century, shaped by the complexities of modern urban life. As cities grow and evolve, they face unprecedented security challenges that transcend traditional notions of crime prevention. These challenges encompass social, cultural, economic, and psychological dimensions, deeply intertwined with societal transformations.
In the context of what sociologist Ulrich Beck refers to as the "risk society," rapid globalization, technological advancement, and cultural diffusion have disrupted traditional social values. This disruption has created environments of uncertainty and fear, where mutual trust and social cohesion are eroded. As Émile Durkheim …

Background: Black and Hispanic prostate cancer (PCa) survivors, who face a high burden of comorbid conditions and often engage in low levels of physical activity and healthy eating, remain significantly underrepresented in lifestyle intervention studies.
Purpose: Given the significance of spousal influence, we developed a culturally tailored lifestyle intervention for these survivors and their spouses and assessed its feasibility, acceptability, and impact on behavioral change.
Methods: Survivor-spouse couples were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 22), which received 12 health-coaching calls over 6 months, or a usual-care control group (n = 9). Assessments were conducted at baseline (T1), …

Smevca: Stable Matching-Based Ev Charging Assignment In Subscription-Based Models, Arindam Khanda, Anurag Satpathy, Anusha Vangala, Sajal K. Das
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
The rapid shift from internal combustion engine vehicles to battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs) presents considerable challenges, such as limited charging points (CPs), unpredictable wait times for charging, and difficulty in selecting appropriate CPs for EVs. To address these challenges, we propose a novel end-to-end framework, called Stable Matching based EV Charging Assignment (SMEVCA) that efficiently assigns charge-seeking EVs to CPs with the assistance of roadside units (RSUs). The proposed framework operates within a subscription-based model, ensuring that the subscribed EVs complete their charging within a predefined time limit enforced by a service level agreement (SLA). The framework SMEVCA employs a …

The Act authorizes state law enforcement to verify suspects’ immigration statuses, requires that local government agencies cooperate with federal immigration authorities, and mandates detailed, consistent reporting on non-citizen inmates. It aims to promote public safety, enhance state immigration laws such that they align with federal immigration laws, and ensure that state law enforcement and government agencies adhere to immigration enforcement protocols.

Local Government - General Provisions Applicable To Counties, Nicholas L. Adams, Tyler Prather Mauro
Georgia State University Law Review
The bill proposed a private cause of action that allowed citizens to sue municipal governments for enacting “sanctuary” policies that barred city or county employees from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement officials. If found in violation of the state ban on such policies, all non-emergency state funds and federal funds administered by the state would be withdrawn. Also, eligible members of the governing body could be suspended without pay by the Governor upon the recommendation of the Board of Community Affairs. Finally, governing bodies and their members found in violation would have their sovereign immunity waived for all causes of …

The Act includes various amendments to Georgia’s Judicial and Criminal Codes. Two changes are most notable. First, the Act permits the vacating of sentences for victims of human trafficking who were convicted under Article 3 of Chapter 8 of Title 42— Georgia’s first offender statute. Second, the Act provides enhanced privacy for these victims by restricting access to their criminal history relating to the offense.

The Act primarily functions to expand the list of serious offenses for which bail or surety is required by adding thirty new offenses, including misdemeanors that have a mandatory cash bail. It also requires many repeat offenders to post bail or surety. In addition, the Act restricts organizations, charities, or individuals to bail out a maximum of three people per year or require them to register as a bonding agency.
Accreditation And Engineering Ethics Education, Shannon M. Chance
Accreditation And Engineering Ethics Education, Shannon M. Chance
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Over time, individuals and entities within the engineering education community have developed a multifaceted strategy to synchronize global educational practices and performance metrics. This comprehensive approach involves conducting and disseminating educational research (evident throughout this handbook) and implementing research-informed pedagogies in the classroom (exemplified by the teaching methods section). It also includes establishing and aligning accreditation standards internationally – to guide the content and delivery of engineering education, including ethics. Although this section focuses on the accreditation of engineering ethics education (EEE), understanding the overall accreditation system is essential for grasping the ethics component.

Interference With The Democratic Process As Public Nuisance, Richard C. Boldt, Donald G. Gifford
Interference With The Democratic Process As Public Nuisance, Richard C. Boldt, Donald G. Gifford

This Article argues that the tort of public nuisance provides a vehicle for holding accountable those engaged in antidemocratic conduct. Recent history suggests that neither the criminal justice system nor Constitutional checks and balances are always up to the task. Following the 2020 election, some supporters of President Trump stormed the Capitol to prevent the counting of the electoral votes, tampered with election machines, and intimidated election workers and voters. Depending on the results of the 2024 election, criminal charges against Trump and some of his followers may be dismissed. The Senate failed to convict the President on articles of …
