Ignition Interlock Devices: Do They Really Help?, Angelise Khoury, Connor Rolland Jun 2025

Ignition Interlock Devices: Do They Really Help?, Angelise Khoury, Connor Rolland

Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase

The United States has implemented a wide range of technologies and policies to reduce the amount of alcohol-impaired driving. Some of these include alcohol detection sensors in newer vehicles, ridesharing, DUI checkpoints, Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring (SCRAM) bracelets, and more. One widely used technology used to reduce alcohol-impaired driving is the Ignition Interlock Device (IID). The IID is used in lieu of suspending one’s driver’s license after a DUI offense. IIDs are a widely implemented technology that we use today as a method of preventing driving under the influence of alcohol. Although they intend to ensure sober driving and …

#Clandestini: How Italy's Center-Right Parliamentary Coalition Frames The Migrant Crisis On Social Media, Jenna Lynn Depasquale Jun 2025

#Clandestini: How Italy's Center-Right Parliamentary Coalition Frames The Migrant Crisis On Social Media, Jenna Lynn Depasquale

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the intersection of Italian neo-fascism, the Mediterranean migrant crisis, and digital media. Through a qualitative content analysis of the Twitter and Instagram posts made by Italy's center-right parliamentary coalition from 2014-2018, this research outlines frameworks that facilitate both the physical and social deaths of migrants. Twitter is a platform on which bite-sized xenophobic messages characterize migrants as criminals, spoiled youth, spreaders of infectious disease, and future terrorists--sometimes in a contradictory fashion. Instagram is a medium for conveying Italian identity and history, which disregards the longstanding contributions of people of color, including Muslims, in Southern Italy. Comment sections …

Latino Threat Perceptions And Immigration Attitudes: An Examination Across Generations Of Latinos, Michelle Angel Jun 2025

Latino Threat Perceptions And Immigration Attitudes: An Examination Across Generations Of Latinos, Michelle Angel

Dissertations and Theses

Recently, immigration has been a major focus in U.S. politics, more importantly with the current administration pushing for the implementation of punitive immigration policies. Research shows that perceived Latino threat is associated with support of Trump and harsh border controls. While existing research has expanded the perceived Latino threat and punitive border control attitudes among non-Latinos, less is known about how perceived Latino threat and punitive border control attitudes function within their own group and how they might vary across different generations of Latinos. Accordingly, there has been a shift in Latino voting preferences, specifically across different generations of Latinos. …

The study purpose was to collate information from Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission staff in each USA state to document current fitness mandates and policies for recruits/officers. A 10-question survey was allocated to an appropriate representative from every state POST organization. The survey collected information regarding minimum state-mandated fitness standards for academy entry and exit; minimum state-mandated requirements for fitness programming, including safety plans; education/training requirements for fitness training instructors; and minimum …

Looking For The Public In Public Law, Nikhil Menezes, David E. Pozen Jun 2025

Looking For The Public In Public Law, Nikhil Menezes, David E. Pozen

University of Chicago Law Review

The “public” is everywhere and nowhere in contemporary public law. Everywhere, in that the term is constantly invoked to justify and explain existing arrangements. Nowhere, in that serious attempts to identify a relevant public and elicit its input are few and far between. Scholars and officials depict the U.S. public as playing myriad roles in governance—checking, guiding, approving, repudiating—without offering an account of how public preferences are formed or how they exercise influence on questions of interest.

This Article seeks to identify and call attention to the foundational dilemmas underlying this disconnect, to clarify their normative contours and intellectual history, …

A Battery Charging System From A Spinning Dc Generator, William L. Robey, Darcy A. Eliasi, Kalel Gadduang, Ella Blecher

Electrical Engineering

This project presents the design and construction of a battery charging system powered by a wind energy emulator. An adjustable-speed DC motor drive coupled to a DC generator was used to imitate a wind turbine rotating at different speeds, supplying a variable DC voltage to a custom PCB with an LTC4020, a four-switch buck-boost converter and battery charger. The converter steps up or down the input voltage, ranging from 12 to 24 volts, to safely charge a lithium-ion battery using a constant current constant voltage charging cycle (CC/CV). The system highlights the practicality and increasing use of renewable and wind-powered …

Communication Studies

The purpose of this paper is to carefully analyze how news organizations have reported on impacts to women nationwide as a result of the Dobbs v. Jackson’s Women’s Health Organization (2022) ruling by the Supreme Court. This case overruled a landmark case in judicial history, Roe v. Wade (1973), which protected the act of abortion through constitutional interpretation. There are several news reporting outlets, which include the Los Angeles Times, Houston Chronicle, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Minnesota Star Tribune which are included in this paper to aid in discussing abortion and real life stories …

Dobbs, State Policies, And Minors’ Interests In An Open Future, Lois A. Weithorn Jun 2025

Dobbs, State Policies, And Minors’ Interests In An Open Future, Lois A. Weithorn

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The United States Supreme Court discarded five decades of established federal constitutional doctrine with its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Following Dobbs, legislators in some states rushed to restrict the decisions of pregnant persons. Litigation, executive actions, and voter initiatives, including attempts to amend state constitutions, quickly followed. At the time of this writing, access to abortion is severely restricted in large swaths of the country. Increasing numbers of pregnant persons have sought out-of-state services through telehealth or cross-border travel. Some states have created new forms of criminal or civil liability in an effort to prevent its …

Blueprint For A Youth Violence Intervention Program In East Baton Rouge Parish: Adapting Hospital-Based Strategies, Kristina G. Little, Elizabeth Winchester, Judith L F Rhodes

Reports

Youth violence in East Baton Rouge Parish remains a persistent public safety and public health challenge. This report proposes an adapted, evidence-informed model for East Baton Rouge Parish that retains the core components of traditional HVIPs while leveraging existing legal, hospital, and social service resources. The model is grounded in a public health framework and emphasizes trauma-informed, bedside intervention at the “teachable moment” when youth are most receptive to change, and long-term wraparound case management. The report concludes with recommendations for implementing this adapted approach, including identifying a health system champion, building referral protocols, embedding training, and developing a long-term …

Discord And The Pentagon's Watchdog: Countering Extremism In The U.S. Military, Amy Gaudion Jun 2025

Discord And The Pentagon's Watchdog: Countering Extremism In The U.S. Military, Amy Gaudion

Indiana Law Journal

In his 2022 book, Ward Farnsworth crafts a metaphor from the lead-pipe theory for the fall of Rome to consider how rage and misinformation traveling through today’s technology-enabled pipes are poisoning our civic engagement and threatening our governmental structures: “We have built networks for the delivery of information––the internet, and especially social media. These networks too, are a marvel. But they also carry a kind of poison with them. The mind fed from those sources learns to subsist happily on quick reactions, easy certainties, one-liners, and rage.”1 This Article carries the metaphor into a new context and considers what should …

All-American Crime: Reflections On Welcome The Wretched By César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández, Kit Johnson Jun 2025

All-American Crime: Reflections On Welcome The Wretched By César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández, Kit Johnson

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review

In his 2024 book, Welcome the Wretched, Professor César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández questions why it is that non-citizens who have committed crimes are slated for removal from this country. After all, he notes, “Migrants don’t bring crime here. It’s already here. It always has been and always will be.”

We may not readily admit it, but crime in the United States is truly All-American. Section I of this Essay tries to shed light on the widespread nature of criminality in the United States by recounting my own crimes and those of family and friends, with the goal of pushing the …

The Overstated Cost Of Ai Fairness In Criminal Justice, Ignacio Cofone, Warut Khern-Am-Nuai Jun 2025

The Overstated Cost Of Ai Fairness In Criminal Justice, Ignacio Cofone, Warut Khern-Am-Nuai

Indiana Law Journal

The dominant critique of algorithmic fairness in AI decision-making, particularly in criminal justice, is that increasing fairness reduces the accuracy of predictions, thereby imposing a cost on society. This Article challenges that assumption by empirically analyzing the COMPAS algorithm, a widely used and widely discussed risk assessment tool in the U.S. criminal justice system.

This Article makes two contributions. First, it demonstrates that widely used AI models do more than replicate existing biases—they exacerbate them. Using causal inference methods, we show that racial bias is not only present in the COMPAS dataset but also worsened by AI models such as …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Aim

Academic integrity is crucial in dental education, especially during practical exams assessing competencies. Traditional oversight may not detect sophisticated academic dishonesty methods like radiograph substitution or tampering. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a novel artificial intelligence (AI) model utilizing a Siamese neural network to detect inconsistencies in radiographic images taken for root canal treatment (RCT) procedures in preclinical endodontic courses, thereby enhancing educational integrity.

Methododology

A Siamese neural network was designed to compare radiographs from different RCT procedures. The model was trained on 3390 radiographs, with data augmentation applied to improve generalizability. The dataset was split into …
