The Juvenile Record Myth, Joy Radice
The Juvenile Record Myth, Joy Radice
Scholarly Works
The proliferation of adult criminal records and their harmful impact on people with convictions has received growing attention from scholars, the media, and legislators from both sides of the political aisle. That common notion is a myth.
This Article addresses that myth and adds to both the juvenile justice and collateral consequences literature in four ways. First, The Juvenile Record Myth illuminates the variety of ways states treat juvenile …

Journal Articles
© 2018 Uwemedimo and May. Objective: Children in immigrant families (CIF) are at elevated risk of experiencing adverse social determinants of health (SDH), particularly material hardship, which contribute to disparate health outcomes. Previous studies have found that SDH screening programs integrated into pediatric practices have increased receipt of social service resources. Few studies have examined use of social services in these programs among ethnically-diverse patient populations and associations with caregiver immigrant status or limited English proficiency (LEP). Methods: Caregivers of children (<18 >years) were routinely screened in a practice-based, SDH screening program offering referral, assisted navigation and follow-up support. Information …18>

Evidence-Based Interventions To Address Workplace Violence In The Emergency Department, Gari Leigh Adams
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Workplace violence, as a result of violent patient behavior, is a problem in health care settings and the incidence is increasing. The vulnerability of the emergency department (ED) contributes to the high incidence of violence and includes long waits, crowded spaces, high anxiety levels, substance abuse, and a large number of behavioral health patients seeking treatment. ED team members admit they do not always feel safe when caring for patients due to the risk of violent behavior. Workplace violence effects team member productivity, job satisfaction, and burnout. Team members are at risk for injury or harm and coping challenges as …

The Paradox Of Source Credibility In Canadian And U.S. Domestic Counterterrorism Communications, Patrick Belanger, Susan Szmania
HCOM Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article examines the interface of rhetorical theories of credibility and the domestic counterterrorism communications of government and nongovernment actors in Canada and the United States. We track evolving attempts to controvert terrorists’ propaganda through official and unofficial channels. Each country has a comprehensive counterterrorism strategy that employs both deterrence and “soft” approaches, such as diplomacy and engagement. Our focus is the latter. First, we discuss how governments undertook counterterrorism communications following September 2001. Second, we explore attempts to engage credible voices outside of government, such as former violent extremists and religious leaders, in the fight against terrorism. We conclude …
