The Cost Of Athletics In Higher Ed, Aldemaro Romero Jr. Apr 2018

The Cost Of Athletics In Higher Ed, Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

Among the greatest concerns regarding higher education are their budgets. With diminishing appropriations from state governments for public institutions, and decreasing enrollments affecting not only state but also private institutions, we see policies of slash and burn. Entire academic programs have been eliminated, which has oftentimes led to a loss of jobs. Yet a number of other programs that have nothing to do with the main mission of colleges and universities – education – seem to be untouchable. The most prominent example is athletics. It is interesting that big sports programs are a feature unique to the American higher education …

Ecological Footprint Of Flood Mitigation Structures At The Absecon Inlet, Eduardo Garcia, Mackenzie Carr, Jason Loeffler

STEM Student Research Symposium Posters

The primary goal of this clinic project is to measure the ecological footprint of the flood mitigation structures in Absecon Inlet. This area is prone to floods due to rising sea levels and storms. Beaches and boardwalks were affected during numerous hurricanes including: Jose (2017), Andrea (2013), Sandy (2012), Irene (2011), and Hanna (2008). Seawalls, sand dunes, and jetties were constructed to protect the shoreline from these floods based on the studies conducted by the US Army Corp of Engineers. In this clinic, we assess the effect of these man-made structures on the ecology of the surrounding areas. The ecology …

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Needle Return in Needle Exchange Programs

The first NEP (Needle Exchange Program) was in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1984, followed four years later by the first U.S. NEP in 1988 in Tacoma, Washington (The Center for Innovative Public Policies, 2012). NEPs have been shown to reduce risk of disease, and prior studies suggest that individuals who participate in such programs are more likely to enter recovery from opioid addiction, making them an important public health intervention. The worldwide average for needle return in NEPs is around 90% (Ksobiech, 2004). With the needle return rate in Huntington being around 60%-70%, it is …

Do Students Feel Safe On Campus? A Policy Evaluation Of The Clery Act, Amanda Sidwell

Honors Theses

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (the Clery Act) is federal policy aimed at creating safer college campuses. It attempts to provide students with statistics on crimes that occur on campus and inform them of the security policies and various resources available to them. The Clery Act also mandates that institutions of higher education (IHE) send out alerts of emergencies that occur on campus.

So how safe do Western Michigan University (WMU or “Western”) students feel on campus? This study attempted to answer this question by asking students through a survey. The students’ …

College Student Food Insecurity And Awareness And Use Of Supports: Recent Findings From A Survey Of Students At A Mid-Sized State Comprehensive University In Kansas, Brett Zollinger, Shala Mills, Emily Brandt, Wendy Rohleder-Sook

eJournal of Public Affairs

Recognition of food insecurity among college students in the U.S. is growing. With college costs outpacing inflation for many years now, to what extent do students at "affordable" public-supported state universities experience difficulty affording food throughout the academic year? This article highlights the level of food insecurity among students enrolled in on-campus courses at Fort Hays State University. A two-wave, self-administered mail survey found that 34% of on-campus students experienced food insecurity in the previous year, and those who were food insecure were much more likely to use local food supports, including a campus food pantry. Current combined household income …

Evaluation Of Open Data Government Sites: A Comparative Study, Jayanta Kr Nayek

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The problems of open data government sites are mainly in the way data is presented by various government data repositories. There are no metadata standards, specifications, or protocols to achieve better discoverability and interoperability. This paper aims to find a way to solve the problems with open data government sites and propose a framework to provide web based data services which will be semantically structured and also propose a common metadata standard or mechanism for interoperability. Six data government sites have been selected for the study, according to the more number of dataset available and also to cover all continents …

New York Times’ And Wall Street Journal’S Coverage Of Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (Daca): A Content Analysis, Estefany Paniagua-Pardo

Honors Projects

This paper investigates how Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) has been depicted in the U.S specifically by examining the media’s coverage of immigration during the Obama and Trump presidencies in two elite newspapers, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal between June 2012 (when DACA was signed into law) and October 2017 (9 months into Trump’s presidential term).

The findings from the analysis indicate that the tone of the newspapers’ coverage of DACA was both negative and conflict oriented. The news articles were consistently unfavorable; out of a total of 170 articles analyzed and examined, 53.83% were …

Alaska Pretrial Project Proposal: Organizational Structure Change To Incorporate A Mental Health Focus, Anna Gabriel Apr 2018

Alaska Pretrial Project Proposal: Organizational Structure Change To Incorporate A Mental Health Focus, Anna Gabriel

Justice

The Pretrial Enforcement Division (PED) for the Alaska Department of Corrections (DOC) came into operation on January 1, 2018. PED emerged out of senate bill ninety-one (91) in hopes to reduce incarceration population, and the overall costs of corrections to the state. In response to the new division, a closer look at how this may or may not affect the prison population with behavioral health needs is analyzed. DOC is the number one mental health provider in the state, and often individuals with behavioral health needs are incarcerated longer than those without. With the proposal of assessing all defendants prior …

Solitary confinement can be summarized as the state of being alone in a prison cell for 22 to 24 hours a day with minimal human interaction, little to no natural light, property restrictions, visitation constraints, and the inability to participate in group activities and communal meals. Solitary confinement can go by many names; it can be referred to as lockdown, Security or Special Housing Units (SHU), Special Management Units (SMU), administrative segregation, disciplinary or punitive segregation, restrictive housing, or "the hole". Solitary confinement is utilized for many purposes, primarily for the health and safety of themselves and others. It was …

In Sheep’S Clothing: Reflections On The Trickery Of Nature, Moneerah Alayar Apr 2018

In Sheep’S Clothing: Reflections On The Trickery Of Nature, Moneerah Alayar

Theses

In the realm of nature as well as in human society, things are often not what they seem. Animals, plants, and humans use endless tricks and stratagems to hide their vulnerable parts, camouflage their true strength, and survive despite hazards and predators at every turn. To exist in this world as a woman is to be a student of these protective devices, to learn and adopt the techniques and behaviors that best ensure her survival against the forces of patriarchy and institutionalized oppression. She must use whatever means she can to protect herself and secure her place in the world. …

The Association Between Dsm-5 Personality Pathology Traits And Violence, Marissa Jennings Apr 2018

The Association Between Dsm-5 Personality Pathology Traits And Violence, Marissa Jennings

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

The recently published DSM-5 included a dimensional model of personality pathology, which includes pathological traits. This model is a response to the many criticisms and problems documented with the traditional categorical modal of personality disorders. To date, numerous studies have demonstrated that the trait model is more valid and reliable than the traditional categorical model (Krueger and Markon 2013). This study expands research on the trait model by assessing the association between the DSM-5 traits and propensity for, or attitudes about, violence.

According to the USDA’s “Food Security Status of U.S. Households” in 2014, 48.1 million people live in food insecure households. In Indiana, more than 1 million people suffer from food insecurity with rates as high as 19.2% of Marion County’s population according to the Map the Meal Gap 2014 report. The Community Controlled Food Initiative (CCFI) is a local food cooperative operated by the Kheprw Institute and neighborhood residents in the Mid-North Indianapolis Community.
