Exploring Environmental Heat Injuries In The Pediatric Population, Jennifer Bowman Jan 2019

Exploring Environmental Heat Injuries In The Pediatric Population, Jennifer Bowman

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Children are considered a vulnerable population in society. While thermoregulation in children is similar to that of an adult, children are vulnerable to heat-related illness. Student athletes have been found to be particularly vulnerable to heat-related illness for numerous reasons, including intense outdoor play. Football players are perhaps the most at-risk population of student athletes due to the intense physical requirements, outdoor practice during the hottest months of the year, and the extensive protective equipment required. By conducting a literature review on the subject of pediatric heat illness, the purpose of this thesis is to explore evidenced based research and …

The Effect Of Family And Social Support On Suicidal Ideation In Jails, Megan L. Small Jan 2019

The Effect Of Family And Social Support On Suicidal Ideation In Jails, Megan L. Small

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Suicidal ideation and associated behaviors are up to four times more common among jail inmates than the general community (Jenkins et al., 2005; Hayes, 1986). Research finds a variety of social, biological, and psychological factors interact to influence suicidal thoughts of incarcerated individuals (Bonner, 1992; Borrill et al., 2005). Particularly, psychological distress such as, depression and feelings of hopelessness, along with loss of social support and decreased feelings of connectedness have been linked to suicidal ideation and behaviors (Moscicki, 1997; Hawton & van Heeringen, 2009). Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2017) has emphasized the importance of connectedness …

Policing The Police: Balancing The Right To Privacy Against The Beneficial Use Of Drone Technology, Jennifer M. Bentley Jan 2019

Policing The Police: Balancing The Right To Privacy Against The Beneficial Use Of Drone Technology, Jennifer M. Bentley

UC Law Journal

The cost of buying, operating, and maintaining manned aircraft traditionally limited the government’s ability to conduct widespread aerial surveillance. But drone technology is eroding this natural limit because they are cheaper, stealthier, and can be used as a platform for other powerful surveillance tools. Drones are ideally suited for numerous law enforcement tasks such as search and rescue, crime scene investigations, and gaining a bird’s-eye view in dangerous active shooter or hostage situations. Privacy rights advocates fear that drone capabilities are bringing us closer to a “surveillance society” in which our every move is monitored, recorded, and scrutinized by the …

Athletic Administrators Report Of Emergency Action Plan Adoption In Secondary School Athletics: The Influence Of Athletic Training Services, Samantha E. Scarneo-Miller, Lindsay J. Distefano, Johna K. Register-Mihalik, Rebecca L. Stearns, Craig R. Denegar, Douglas J. Casa

Journal of Applied Sport Management

This study describes the emergency action plan (EAP) adoption in secondary school athletics reported by athletic administrators in the United States. Utilizing best-practice criteria, a questionnaire assessed athletic administrators’ knowledge and adoption of an EAP in their athletics program. A majority of athletic administrators reported having an EAP; however, the EAP often lacked the necessary components to be compliant with best-practice guidelines. Further, access to an athletic trainer was associated with increased EAP adoption and adopting a venue specific EAP. Athletic administrators should utilize these data to facilitate improved policy adoption and management of athletics programs.

Connecting The Dots: Quality, Antitrust, And Medicine, Theodosia Stavroulaki Jan 2019

Connecting The Dots: Quality, Antitrust, And Medicine, Theodosia Stavroulaki

Loyola Consumer Law Review

Antitrust applies to healthcare. Questioning the wisdom of this universal truth, medical professionals actively insisted and still insist on professional discretion, self-regulations and other practices that violate the antitrust laws. What do medical professionals aim to achieve by resisting the application of antitrust into their profession? What do antitrust enforcers aim to achieve by applying antitrust law to the medical profession? The answer is simple. Among others, both antitrust enforcers and medical professionals aim to ensure quality. Interestingly, albeit their goal is identical, their approach is different. Why? This essay explores this enigma by analyzing some seminal healthcare antitrust cases. …

Trade And The Separation Of Powers, Timothy Meyer, Ganesh Sitaraman Jan 2019

Trade And The Separation Of Powers, Timothy Meyer, Ganesh Sitaraman

Faculty Scholarship

There are two paradigms through which to view trade law and policy within the American constitutional system. One paradigm sees trade law and policy as quintessentially about domestic economic policy. Institutionally, under the domestic economics paradigm, trade law falls within the province of Congress, which has legion Article I powers over commercial matters. The second paradigm sees trade law as fundamentally about America’s relationship with foreign countries. Institutionally, under the foreign affairs paradigm, trade law is the province of the President, who speaks for the United States in foreign affairs. While both paradigms have operated throughout American history, the domestic …

Punishment And Its Limits, Debra Parkes Jan 2019

Punishment And Its Limits, Debra Parkes

All Faculty Publications

The nearly three decades in which Beverley McLachlin was a member of the Supreme Court, including as Chief Justice, witnessed a number of shifts in Canadian penal policy and in the reach and impact of criminal law. During the Harper decade (2006 to 2015) in which the federal Conservatives enjoyed a majority government led by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, criminal justice policy took a turn toward the punitive. The federal government tore a page out of the American legislative handbook and sought to “govern through crime”, albeit in a more restrained Canadian style.

Private Government And The Transparency Deficit, Alfred C. Aman, Landyn W. Rookard Jan 2019

Private Government And The Transparency Deficit, Alfred C. Aman, Landyn W. Rookard

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Modern government is comprised of a complex admixture of public and private actors. From the provision of public services, to growing movements to sell off national parks, to the very task of legislating, the public is unlikely to encounter an area of government that is untouched by privatization. But public transparency mechanisms, including the seminal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), rely upon an outdated, rigid conception of the private-public dichotomy. They fail to provide the public with any meaningful access to what we call the “private government,” which includes the private actors who bear an increasing responsibility for performing governmental …
