Diabetes Self-Management Education In The Urban Low Socioeconomic Status Senior Population, Heather Santa Barbara
Diabetes Self-Management Education In The Urban Low Socioeconomic Status Senior Population, Heather Santa Barbara
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This exploratory quantitative study used a survey design to address a gap in the literature concerning primary care team perceptions about diabetes care for urban low socioeconomic status seniors with diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic health problem that is often managed in primary care offices, and primary care teams are often the first source of education and support for patients. Standards of management for seniors with diabetes has changed to eliminate tight control of glucose levels, and primary care team members may have differing perceptions about diabetes care depending upon their role in the primary care team and years of …

Symbolic Compliance Is Dangerous: Perceptions Of Sexual Assault And The Effectiveness Of Sexual Assault Prevention Programs, Anastasia Hicks-Hunter
Capstone Showcase
College campuses are considered safe havens for students, yet, sexual assault is a prevalent public safety issue for all students. Sexual assault is unwanted or non-consensual sexual activity that is inflicted upon the victim. Sexual assault survivors are put through a life-changing experience that causes negative holistic behaviors, which requires understanding, support, and legal action for them to achieve justice. In my research paper, I am exploring the perceptions of female college survivors of sexual assault and the effectiveness of sexual assault prevention programs.
Examining Ky Hb8 For 2022: What Can We Learn From Other States’ Experiences?, Patrick Welsh
Examining Ky Hb8 For 2022: What Can We Learn From Other States’ Experiences?, Patrick Welsh
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Currently, Kentucky levies an individual income tax on all income earned by Kentucky residents at a rate of 5%. A bill approved in 2022 by the Kentucky legislature, KY HB8 for 2022 will phase down the individual income tax rate from 5% to 0% and expand the sales tax to 39 additional classes of services. Incremental decreases in the individual income tax rate depend on meeting General Fund receipts thresholds established in the bill after an initial reduction of one percentage point. Kentucky will join the ranks of 9 other states that do not impose an individual income tax including …

Covid, Care, And The Carceral State: American Disposability Politics And The Selective Weaponization Of Public Health Guidelines During Covid-19, Uma Nagarajan-Swenson
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis examines the American state's role in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on marginalized communities, arguing that the state used the frame of disposability politics to justify expanding its carceral capacities and withdrawing as a provider of welfare during the pandemic.

Deterrence And The Death Penalty: A Study Of The Effects Of Capital Punishment On Homicide, Jacob Stump
Deterrence And The Death Penalty: A Study Of The Effects Of Capital Punishment On Homicide, Jacob Stump
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The death penalty receives an abundance of criticism within the United States, as critics argue it to be cruel and an unjust form of punishment. As the debate carries on and more states illegalize the death penalty, the largest point of contention centers on the question: to what extent does the death penalty deter homicides from occurring? This analysis is critical to the implementation of the death penalty, as many legal scholars cite its ability to deter to be its strongest argument for persisting. Ultimately, any argument that undermines this theory provides a greater incentive for abolition, as the death …

The Roots And Influences Of Radical Black Women In The 21st Century, Paul Thomas
The Roots And Influences Of Radical Black Women In The 21st Century, Paul Thomas
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Gender, race, and class are concepts that define the lived experiences of Black women in the United States. Black women’s experiences of police violence at the intersections of gender, race, and class, particularly, have helped to create radical critiques of the system of white supremacy and police brutality. My thesis explores these experiences from the Civil Rights Movement to the Black Lives Matter era to argue that the oppression, resistance, and the emergence of radical Black women organizers have made transformational contributions to the ongoing fight for Black liberation.
A Program Evaluation Of The Town Of Woodside, Plumas County Fire Safe Council, And Mountain Communities’ Fire Safe Council Defensible Space Projects, Mandeep Gill
Master's Projects
California is one of the most fire-prone regions in the world, with every passing year becoming more hazardous. With a tremendous amount of loss and damage occurring every year due to wildfires, property owners must prepare their homes and structures to withstand fires as much as possible. The best way to achieve this is by building and retrofitting homes with fire-resistant materials and creating defensible space around the property (Cal Fire, n.d.). Although it is the best way to protect one’s property, it is often times difficult for property owners to do so because of financial or physical limitations, or …
The Right To Privacy And Data Protection In Times Of Armed Conflict, Asaf Lubin, Russell Buchan
The Right To Privacy And Data Protection In Times Of Armed Conflict, Asaf Lubin, Russell Buchan
Books & Book Chapters by Maurer Faculty
Contemporary warfare yields a profound impact on the rights to privacy and data protection. Technological advances in the fields of electronic surveillance, predictive algorithms, big data analytics, user-generated evidence, artificial intelligence, cloud storage, facial recognition, and cryptography are redefining the scope, nature, and contours of military operations. Yet, international humanitarian law offers very few, if any, lex specialis rules for the lawful processing, analysis, dissemination, and retention of personal information. This edited anthology offers a pioneering account of the current and potential future application of digital rights in armed conflict.

Unservice: Reconceptualizing The Utility Duty To Serve In Light Of Climate Change, Heather Payne
Unservice: Reconceptualizing The Utility Duty To Serve In Light Of Climate Change, Heather Payne
University of Richmond Law Review
Many facets of utility monopoly regulation are approaching a minimum of eight decades as part of our legal landscape. A bedrock principle of state utility regulation is the duty to serve, which demands that utilities provide nondiscriminatory service to all those within their geographic territory for the specific service for which they have been granted a monopoly. Within its exclusive territory, a utility is required “to serve all present and reasonably to be anticipated future users.” Each state has adopted some form of this for its regulated monopolies, although formulations differ. This Article argues that in light of climate change …

Housing The Decarcerated: Covid-19, Abolition & The Right To Housing, Norrinda Brown
Housing The Decarcerated: Covid-19, Abolition & The Right To Housing, Norrinda Brown
Faculty Scholarship
The coronavirus pandemic revealed the need to advance the right to housing and abolition movements. The need for advancements in both spaces was no more painfully apparent than among the recently decarcerated population. Securing housing for the recently decarcerated is particularly difficult due to the “culture of exclusion” that has long pervaded subsidized housing policy, enabled by a patchwork of federal laws, including the Anti-Drug Abuse Act (ADA) of 1988 and the Supreme Court’s ruling in HUD v. Rucker. The culture of exclusion is arbitrated by local housing authorities and works on three levels: eligibility, enforcement, and set asides. As …

Essays In Immigration Economics, Igor Mocko
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation examines the two policies involving undocumented immigrants – granting them driver’s permits, and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival legalization. The introductory chapter surveys the history of the U.S. immigration system and reviews several approaches of identifying the undocumented population in data. Chapter 2 focuses on the Michigan driver’s license ban enacted in 2008 that restricted driving permits only to citizens and legally present foreigners. Using several time specifications and estimation methods, the data show that the ban did not increase traffic safety. Instead, the number of accidents after the ban increased by about 5%. This is consistent …

Board Governance In Crisis: Director Influence In Executive Crisis Leadership, Kevin Schaller
Board Governance In Crisis: Director Influence In Executive Crisis Leadership, Kevin Schaller
Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 global pandemic is the most far-reaching crisis of the modern era and the cascading impacts on organizations is tantamount to a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment for decision-making by board directors and top management team (TMT) leaders. The pandemic provided an unprecedented opportunity to expand upon the disparate research associated with decision-making by board directors and TMT leaders during crises. This phenomenological study explored how the pandemic influenced decision-making distinctly from previous crisis events and how executive decisions on firm policies and strategies transpired throughout the crisis. A sample of 32 board directors and senior executives …
Making Sex Work Safe: Using A Consensus-Based Approach To Create Meaningful Policy For Sex Workers, Alexandra Sandler
Making Sex Work Safe: Using A Consensus-Based Approach To Create Meaningful Policy For Sex Workers, Alexandra Sandler
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
Sex work has been described as the world's oldest profession, yet it has remained nearly unchanged in the U.S., largely due to the conflation between sex work and sex trafficking. The term "sex worker" refers to a person who willingly works in the industry to make a living. Sex trafficking, though, is a form of modern-day slavery, in which an individual performs commercial sex as a result of force, fraud, or coercion. The conflation of sex work and sex trafficking in the U.S. has resulted in oppressive policies that undermine the rights and safety of sex workers. With the exception …
Every Reasonable Chance Plus Two: How The Red Hook Community Justice Center Bridges The Gap Between The Community And The Justice System, Se Won Park
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
The following is excerpted from an article published by Fordham Law News:
Standing before Judge Calabrese is Sean Johnson (his name has been changed to protect his privacy). Over the years he has been in and out of Rikers Island and has been arrested multiple times, most recently for shoplifting.
Today, Johnson has come before Judge Calabrese not for arraignment or sentencing but to do his part to solve some of the problems that have kept him cycling in and out of prison. On this afternoon, he has tested drug-free after months of counseling and treatment.
"Mr. Johnson," Judge Calabrese …

How To Resolve Capital Cases Through Pretrial Mediation, Clare Haugh
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
Adam Lawson sat in shackles, cradling his head in his hands, rocking back and forth. He was waiting in the State Attorney's Office in Jacksonville, Florida, preparing to meet the Liles family, whose matriarch had been the victim of a home invasion and homicide he committed over a year earlier. Mr. Lawson was charged with capital murder, and his case was the third in a series of attempted mediations in death-eligible criminal cases by the State Attorney for Florida's Fourth Judicial Circuit.

Race And Washington’S Criminal Justice System 2021: Report To The Washington Supreme Court, Task Force 2.0 Research Working Group
Seattle University Law Review
This report is an update on the 2011 Preliminary Report on Race and Washington’s Criminal Justice System. This update does not include as context the history of race discrimination in Washington, and readers are encouraged to view the 2011 report for its brief historical overview.14 The 2011 report began with that historical overview because the criminal justice system does not exist in a vacuum. Instead, it exists as part of a legal system that for decades actively managed and controlled where people could live, work, recreate, and even be buried.
Members of communities impacted by race disproportionality in Washington’s criminal …
Model-Based Cognitive Communications For Low-Power Wireless Networks, Indika Sanjeewa Abeywickrama Dhanapala
Model-Based Cognitive Communications For Low-Power Wireless Networks, Indika Sanjeewa Abeywickrama Dhanapala
Theses
Our world is increasingly being instrumented with low-power wireless networks that deliver data for diverse application domains such as energy management, health and well-being, security, and other Internet of Things services. As these wireless networks operate in the unlicensed radio spectrum while co-existing with various other communication networks, their communication reliability and energy efficiency are affected by the radio environment. Because of this vulnerability to radio interference, low-power wireless networks may be unable to deliver their application requirements and be inefficiently consuming energy, functioning as a low-dependability network. The situation is exacerbated in indoor environments such as office and residential …
Pyrrhic Defeat Theory: The Lucrative Failure Of Prison Privatization, Abdy Javadzadeh
Pyrrhic Defeat Theory: The Lucrative Failure Of Prison Privatization, Abdy Javadzadeh
Intercultural Human Rights Law Review
This paper examines the present criminal justice system in the United States and specifically the privatization of the prison system by using Professor Jeffery Reiman's Pyrrhic Defeat Theory to decipher and dissect the privatization of the prison system. Further, this theory will be used to explain such severe social control measures for not only the purposes of profit maximization on behalf of private corporations building, managing, and writing prison policy, but to concretize the existing racial and class structure in the U.S. Using Pyrrhic defeat theory (success through failure), one could expound the intentions and consequences of American privatization of …
