“It could never happen to me though, right?”
Sitting on our comfortable couches in our secure homes and watching news stories about people who have lost loved ones to the most terrible, violent crimes, we think to ourselves: “That’s awful for them, but it won’t happen to me.” But what if it did?
Becoming a victim of a violent crime or loving someone who becomes a victim of a crime in the United States is not uncommon. In 2016, 2.9 million people in the United States were victims of at least one “violent crime”—crimes defined by their inherent violence, …

On May 20, 2014, Miguel Gonzalez became eligible for conditional release from prison, having served over two years of his two-and-a-half-year sentence for statutory rape. Instead of releasing Gonzalez, the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) confined Gonzalez for an additional seven and a half months after his initial release date and over four months after his maximum sentence. On February 4, 2015, DOCCS finally released Gonzalez from New York’s Woodbourne Correctional Facility. The sole reason for Gonzalez’s additional confinement was his failure to secure housing that complied with the residency restrictions placed on individuals convicted …
Self-Portraits For Social Change: Audience Response To A Photovoice Exhibition By Women With Disability, Diane Macdonald, Angela Dew, Karen Fisher Assoc Prof, Katherine Boydell
Self-Portraits For Social Change: Audience Response To A Photovoice Exhibition By Women With Disability, Diane Macdonald, Angela Dew, Karen Fisher Assoc Prof, Katherine Boydell
The Qualitative Report
Negative attitudes about and behaviours towards women with disability are harmful and exclusionary, contributing to poorer health, income, educational, and employment outcomes. Our study focused on what audiences learnt, felt, and did (what changed) after viewing self-portraits and stories by women with disability. We questioned whether a public exhibition of their artworks, created through photovoice methodology, could be an effective platform to provoke social change and increase inclusion for people with disability. We collected audience response to our exhibition to address a research gap and to provide an example for other photovoice researchers. We employed interpretive thematic analysis through a …

Brief For The Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Southern Ute Tribe, The Crow Nation, And Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe As Amici Curiae Supporting Respondent, Paul Spruhan
Faculty Scholarship
The Navajo Nation, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, the Southern Ute Tribe, the Crow Nation, and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe submit this amicus brief in support of Respondent Castro-Huerta.1 The signatory tribes do so to contest the State of Oklahoma’s argument that states have inherent criminal jurisdiction over crimes committed by non-Indians against Indians in Indian Country. Amici curiae are signatories to “Peace Commission” treaties with the United States that affirm tribal sovereignty over their territory to the exclusion of the states, with the federal government assuming the responsibility to arrest and prosecute non-Indian “bad men” who commit offenses …

Essays On Marginal Treatment Effects, Vitor Augusto Possebom
Essays On Marginal Treatment Effects, Vitor Augusto Possebom
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
In this dissertation, I discuss identification problems with two sources of endogeneity. In both chapters, one source of endogeneity is self-selection into treatment. To address this problem, I use the Marginal Treatment Effect framework developed by Heckman and Vytlacil (2009). In the first chapter, I partially identify the marginal treatment effect (MTE) function when the treatment variable is misclassified. To do so, I explore three sets of restrictions on the relationship between the instrument, the misclassified treatment and the correctly measured treatment, allowing for dependence between the instrument and the misclassification decision. If the signs of the derivatives of the …
System Abstractions For Scalable Application Development At The Edge, Bo Hu
System Abstractions For Scalable Application Development At The Edge, Bo Hu
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Recent years have witnessed an explosive growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which collect or generate huge amounts of data. Given diverse device capabilities and application requirements, data processing takes place across a range of settings, from on-device to a nearby edge server/cloud and remote cloud. Consequently, edge-cloud coordination has been studied extensively from the perspectives of job placement, scheduling and joint optimization. Typical approaches focus on performance optimization for individual applications. This often requires domain knowledge of the applications, but also leads to application-specific solutions. Application development and deployment over diverse scenarios thus incur repetitive manual efforts. There …
Religion Vs. Politics: Which Wins At A Christian Liberal Arts University?, Amanda Williams
Religion Vs. Politics: Which Wins At A Christian Liberal Arts University?, Amanda Williams
Political Studies Student Projects
Scholars have studied the effects of framing on different groups of people for decades. There has also been research on the relationship between religious beliefs and politics. This article takes the unique population of a Christian college campus to combine the test of faith against politics through subtle framing. When faced with a political frame, will these Christians ultimately side with their political beliefs or their religious beliefs? I found through a questionnaire experiment run in November 2021 on Taylor University students and some faculty that religious beliefs prevailed. This result is somewhat surprising giving the current political climate, but …

State Rejection Of Federal Law, Thomas B. Bennett
State Rejection Of Federal Law, Thomas B. Bennett
Notre Dame Law Review
Sometimes the United States Supreme Court speaks, and states do not follow. For example, in 2003, the Arizona Supreme Court agreed to “reject” a decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, because no “sound reasons justif[ied] following” it. Similarly, in 2006, Michigan voters approved a ballot initiative that, according to the legislature that drafted it, sought “at the very least[] to ‘freeze’ the state’s . . . law to prevent” state courts from following a ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court. Surprising though this language may be, there is nothing nefarious about these cases. Cooper v. Aaron this is not. Unlike …
Flood Risk Prediction In Southern Louisiana Using Support Vector Machines, Claire Dorsett
Flood Risk Prediction In Southern Louisiana Using Support Vector Machines, Claire Dorsett
Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers
Flooding in Southern Louisiana is a growing concern as violent weather becomes more frequent. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Louisiana soils have become drier and annual rainfall trends have increased, which may lead to more severe flooding in the coming years. In light of this change in weather trends, flood prediction has become increasingly important for the public’s safety. The focus of this paper is to apply the Support Vector Machine (SVM), a machine learning technique, to classify flood risks based on water gage height, wind speed and direction, and time of the year. In this paper, the …

This Fence Makes No Sense: Developing A Community Engagement Curriculum For Swampscott, Ma, Elana Zabar
Community Engagement Student Work
This project sought to understand the best way to integrate non-exclusionary community engagement into Swampscott, Massachusetts. A curriculum that would encourage municipal officials of Swampscott, MA to develop a more inclusive community engagement process was built and presented to local community engagement practitioners, both affiliated and not affiliated with the municipality, for their feedback. The curriculum suggests creative engagement solutions the town can offer to community members throughout a project's timeline, from idea generation to problem definition, to project development, to post-implementation feedback. These methods of engagement, written under the lens of the Transformative Paradigm, were specifically designed to reduce …

Substance Use Awareness: A Unique Look At Social Policy For Children And Families, Malik Hamm
Community Engagement Student Work
This work is a collection of substance use and addiction research gathered in order to assess substance abuse treatment and services in regard to equity and inclusion. The history of the U.S. government’s approach to substance use policy has led to stigma, criminality, and marginalization between groups in our community. Youth and families of all demographics are looking for ethical, informed mental health and substance use services to provide the best outcomes. Stigmatizing language, overly marketed tobacco and alcohol products, restrictive policy, and rigid law-enforcement tactics promoting the criminality of both adults and juveniles for possession, trafficking, and operating under …
