(1) Background: perinatal alcohol use generates a variety of health risks. Social media platforms discuss fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and other widespread outcomes, providing personalized user-generated content about the perceptions and behaviors related to alcohol use during pregnancy. Data collected from Twitter underscores various narrative structures and sentiments in tweets that reflect large-scale discourses and foster societal stigmas; (2) Methods: We extracted alcohol-related tweets from May 2019 to October 2021 using an official Twitter search API based on a set of keywords provided by our clinical team. Our exploratory study utilized thematic content analysis and inductive qualitative coding methods …

Framing Of Covid-19 In Newspapers: A Perspective From The Us-Mexico Border, Rifat Afrin, Ahasan Harun, Gayle Prybutok, Victor Prybutok

The degree to which the media report a health emergency affects the seriousness with which the people respond to combat the health crisis. Engagement from local newspapers in the US has received scant scrutiny, even though there is a sizable body of scholarship on the analysis of COVID-19 news. We fill this void by focusing on the Rio Grande Valley area of the US-Mexico border. To understand the differences, we compared such local news coverage with the coverage of a national news outlet. After collecting the relevant news articles, we used sentiment analysis, rapid automatic keyword extraction (RAKE), and co-occurrence …

The State Of Jefferson And The Future Of Regional Journalism, Ed Madison Nov 2022

The State Of Jefferson And The Future Of Regional Journalism, Ed Madison

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

With a focus on Josephine County in southern Oregon, this essay explores how media industry closures, consolidations, and cutbacks are adversely affecting coverage of regional and local news in many parts of the country, and the communities served. It addresses how numerous journalism schools are expanding their programs to fill the void. Specifically, the article explores how the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) at the University of Oregon established an experimental class of undergraduates to cover such stories, and why. The author is a professor in multimedia journalism at the SOJC and oversaw a team of a dozen student …

Should Per Se Limits Be Imposed For Cannabis? Equating Cannabinoid Blood Concentrations With Actual Driver Impairment: Practical Limitations And Concerns, Paul Armentano Nov 2022

Should Per Se Limits Be Imposed For Cannabis? Equating Cannabinoid Blood Concentrations With Actual Driver Impairment: Practical Limitations And Concerns, Paul Armentano

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Fourteen US states have amended their longstanding, effect-based DUI drug laws to per se or zero tolerant per se statutes in regard to cannabis. Other states are considering enacting similar legislation. Under these amended traffic safety laws, it is a criminal violation for one to operate a motor vehicle with trace levels of cannabinoids or their metabolites in his or her blood or urine. Opponents of per se cannabinoid limits argue that neither the presence of cannabinoids nor their metabolites are appropriate or consistent predictors of behavioral or psychomotor impairment. They further argue that the imposition of such per se …

Species Substitution And Mislabeling Of Ceviche, Poke, And Sushi Dishes Sold In Orange County, California, Courtney J. Kitch, Amanda M. Tabb, Grace E. Marquis, Rosalee S. Hellberg

Food Science Faculty Articles and Research

Raw, ready-to-eat (RTE) seafood products have become increasingly popular globally, but they are vulnerable to species substitution and mislabeling. DNA barcoding allows for fish species identification by extracting, amplifying, and sequencing a standardized gene target. A wide variety of fish products have been studied with DNA barcoding, but little investigation of ceviche and poke has occurred in the United States. Sushi is known to be a target of mislabeling but has not been extensively studied in Orange County, CA. The objective of this study was to investigate species substitution and mislabeling of sushi, poke, and ceviche dishes sold at restaurants …

Damon Landor v. Louisiana Department of Corrections and Public Safety

Appeal from the United States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana, No. 3:21-cv-733 The Honorable Shelly D. Dick, Chief Judge

From the Summary of the Argument

The Fifth Circuit should re-examine its precedent to allow for monetary damages for individual-capacity suits under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) for three reasons. First, RLUIPA’s text follows the same approach as 42 U.S.C. § 1983 and should be interpreted to afford the same types of broad remedies. Before Employment Division of Oregon v. Smith, …

Addressing Substance Use And Misuse In East Texas: Stakeholder-Driven Needs And Priorities, Yordanos M. Tiruneh, Kimberly S. Elliot, Linda Oyer, Emmanuel Elueze, Vanessa Casanova

School of Medicine Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: This project sought to assess needs, perceived challenges, and priorities regarding substance use disorder (SUD) in East Texas and develop a community-driven research agenda to address those challenges. Methods: Data were gathered through nine focus-group discussions (FGDs) with stakeholders: people living with SUD, families, medical providers, counselors, representatives of community-based organizations, and law enforcement officers. We asked participants how substance use manifests in their communities, which challenges they confronted in coping with substance use and misuse, and in which order their needs should be prioritized. Findings were reported at community forums to confirm the list of challenges and prioritize …

Impact Of Solid State Roadway Lighting On Melatonin In Humans, Ronald B Gibbons, Rajaram Bhagavathula, Benjamin Warfield, George Brainard, John P Hanifin Nov 2022

Impact Of Solid State Roadway Lighting On Melatonin In Humans, Ronald B Gibbons, Rajaram Bhagavathula, Benjamin Warfield, George Brainard, John P Hanifin

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Introduction: In 2009, the World Health Organization identified vehicle crashes, both injury-related and fatal, as a public health hazard. Roadway lighting has long been used to reduce crashes and improve the safety of all road users. Ocular light exposure at night can suppress melatonin levels in humans. At sufficient light levels, all visible light wavelengths can elicit this response, but melatonin suppression is maximally sensitive to visible short wavelength light. With the conversion of roadway lighting to solid state sources that have a greater short wavelength spectrum than traditional sources, there is a potential negative health impact through suppressed melatonin …
