The Role Of Place Of Birth And Residence In Puerto Rican Health Disparities: Evidence From Disability Prevalence Among Archipelago- Vs. Mainland-Born Puerto Ricans, Mara Getz Sheftel, Frank W. Heiland
Publications and Research
Objectives: This paper provides new estimates of disability prevalence for the archipelago and mainland-residing Puerto Rican populations ages 40 and above and compares disability by place of birth and place of residence to investigate drivers of middle and older age health.
Methods: Large nationally representative samples from 2013 to 2017 American Community Survey and Puerto Rico Community Survey data are used to estimate age-specific disability prevalence for archipelago-born/archipelago-residing, archipelago-born/mainland-residing, mainland-born/mainland-residing Puerto Ricans.
Results: Mainland-born/ mainland-residing Puerto Ricans have the lowest age-adjusted disability rates and archipelago-born/archipelago-residing Puerto Ricans have the highest rates. Differences in education explain part of this disparity.

Education Dissertations
This autoethnography explores a career educator's personal and professional journey transitioning from a deficit mindset to an asset based mindset. The author examines teaching practices through critical self-inquiry, reflecting on how technology, including Blended Learning Models (Clayton Christensen Institute, 2013), student-centered learning, and an asset mindset enhance educational experiences. The dissertation integrates key frameworks such as Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) (Mishra, 2019), Universal Design for Learning (UDL) CAST (2024), and the concept of Funds of Knowledge (FoK) (Gonzalez, Moll & Amanti, 2005) to demonstrate how educators can adapt instruction as reflexive practitioners Cunliffe, 2016) to support diverse learners. …
How The Police Released Body-Worn Camera Footage Matters, Angelo Kevin Brown
How The Police Released Body-Worn Camera Footage Matters, Angelo Kevin Brown
Faculty Publications
Body-worn cameras (BWC) policies can have a significant impact on police-community relations in various ways, which this chapter will examine. BWCs have been implemented internationally, especially in the developed world. This chapter will primarily focus on law enforcement policies within the United States of America (USA). BWCs have become very common among law enforcement officers, including police officers, sheriff deputies, state patrol, and federal agents. No national law forces law enforcement to wear BWCs. Since no national policy outlines when footage can or cannot be released to the public, which leaves states and municipalities to deal with the legality and …
Social Networks And Large Language Models For Division I Basketball Game Winner Prediction, Gina Sprint
Social Networks And Large Language Models For Division I Basketball Game Winner Prediction, Gina Sprint
Computer Science Faculty Scholarship
Sporting event outcome prediction is a well-established and actively researched domain, with a particular focus on college basketball’s March Madness tournament. Researchers, fans, and gamblers alike seek accurate game-level predictions using features such as tournament seeds, season performance, and expert opinions. While machine learning algorithms have been harnessed to build prediction models, no perfect model or human-created bracket has emerged. This paper explores a novel approach to basketball game outcome prediction by utilizing the power of social networks and large language models (LLMs). LLMs are trained to understand and generate text, often eliminating the need for a feature engineering step. …

Exploring Market Segmentation For Autonomous Ferries, Ashari Fitra Rachmannullah, Taih Cherng Lirn, Kuo Chung Shang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study aims to investigate the determinants that underlie psychographic segmentation in the domain of autonomous ferries (AFs) by using the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) as a guiding theoretical construct. The paper focuses on Indonesian individuals who had previously utilised conventional ferry services. TPB was applied as a catalyst to identify possible market segmentation among potential AF passengers. In this study, cluster analysis is used to differentiate passengers by their perception of using AFs. The results identified three market segments through cluster analysis based on passengers’ perceptions of using AFs: Resource-Limited, Resource-Capable, and Value-Optimistic. Among these segments, the Resource-Capable …

Bone Grafting With Prp And Dental Implantation For Unilateral Alveolar Cleft Patients, Wesam Ibrahem Homouda, Helmy Ahmed Soliman, Mohamed Amr Hamdy Salem
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) deformity is the most common congenital craniofacial anomaly, often treated with Alveolar Bone Grafting (ABG) in patients with alveolar clefts. Application of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) enhances healing by releasing high concentrations of cytokines from platelets. Over the past century, the treatment for alveolar clefts had been evolved, with the current standard being autologous cancellous bone grafts from iliac crest in 6 to 11-year-old patients during the mixed dentition period. Dental implant has role of holding dental prosthesis, preventing pronounced bone atrophy and loading the augmentation material in cleft area.

E-learning is one of the educational alternatives available to students who need assistance during an emergency. (e.g., Covid-19 pandemic, bad climate, etc.). Most educational institutions are moving a significant portion of their curriculum toward an online learning paradigm to reduce the amount of face-to-face interaction between students and faculty members during times of emergency (e.g., in the case of Covid-19 pandemic). The success of E-learning is conditional on a wide range of aspects, such as students’ and teachers’ levels of self-efficacy, attitudes toward, and confidence in making use of the relevant technology; the instructional approaches that are utilized; the capacity …

The Solo Guitar Works Of Emiliana De Zubeldia: Towards A Performing Edition, Erick Quijada
Theses and Dissertations--Music
This project lays the groundwork for a performing edition of Emiliana de Zubeldia's solo guitar works. It involves a comparative analysis between the autographs and the unpublished critical edition, uncovering discrepancies and errors that need correction in the performing edition. Decisions regarding the omission of notes are made to align the musical text with traditional guitar possibilities. These decisions are rooted in a meticulous musical analysis aimed at ensuring a deep understanding of the works. Additionally, the abstract includes a biography of the composer, providing contextual background.
Exploring How Music Therapy Can Support Transition-Aged Young Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities: An Adapted Multiple Case Study, Hayley Davis
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Young adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) face barriers and challenges after their transition from high school to their post-high school lives. While in high school, a student with IDD receives support and services through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, but once a student with IDD graduates high school, they no longer have access to the services that they were once receiving. While this phenomenon (often referred to as the “disability cliff”) has been examined, there is a lack of research surrounding the perspectives and lived experiences of young adults with IDD. Furthermore, there is very limited research …

Transgender vocal students and professional singers must navigate the delicate balance between their vocal and gender identities while considering the possible risks of Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy. Barriers And Pathways To Music Teacher Professional Agency, David Dockan
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Teacher agency has been a burgeoning topic of research in education and music education. In education research, professional agency has been associated with the influence of policy, teacher demographics, teacher beliefs, professional developments, and teaching environments. In music education, music teacher professional agency is a music teacher’s perception of their capacity to exert power, act, or cause change in their curriculum. Although many researchers and scholars assume that music teachers have agency in their classroom regarding their curriculum, the landscape is shifting due to recent policy changes in the United States, specifically concerning Divisive Concept Laws. Since recent Divisive Concept …

The purpose of this project was to examine in depth the musical experiences of sexual minority women aged 65 and older from rural areas, and to see how musical experiences may have impacted their identity. In this adapted case study, I conducted in-depth one-on-one interviews and constructed …

How Spirituals Influenced Both Resistance To Nazis And Civil Rights Protests, Chandi Plummer
Theses and Dissertations--Music
How have American Negro Spirituals inspired later generations of oppressed and marginalized people? Which songs of suffering and hope were particularly poignant in providing courage and inspiration? Questions such as these sparked my research journey, reaching a crescendo during a lecture recital on November 10, 2023, and now culminating in a dissertation.
Spirituals inspired Albert Franklin Fisher and Dietrich Bonhoeffer in New York City in 1930 during the Harlem Renaissance and traveled (via phonograph and music books) with Bonhoeffer to Nazi Germany during World War II. In America, spirituals influenced Myles and Zilphia Horton, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King, …
