The Freshman Life And Student Health (Flash) Study: Using Social Network Analysis To Understand How Obesity And Stigma Impact Emerging Adult Health, Alena C. Borgatti
All ETDs from UAB
Both racial discrimination and weight stigma have been identified as risk factors for poorer mental, physical, and social health. College students are vulnerable to the effects of stigma, as they greatly value peer acceptance and friendships during a pivotal time of emotional and health behavior development. The present study was the first to use social network analysis to examine the impact of weight and racial discrimination on the development of college social relationships and how these experiences influence students’ physical and mental health. 1330 participants (69% of on-campus freshmen) completed a brief survey on social networks, physical health, mental health, …

Early Childhood Educators’ Perceptions, Attitudes, And Beliefs On Use Of The Modern Classrooms Project: A Case Study, Christina Arriagada
All ETDs from UAB
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how early childhood educators perceive the use of Modern Classrooms Project (MCP) in their classrooms. MCP is an instructional model that promotes blended, self-paced, and mastery-based learning with ties to constructivist teaching ideals. Data were collected using a teacher interview, observations, and the review of teacher resources such as lesson plans and student learning paths. Previous research found MCP was effective at the secondary level. Findings of this study showed that early childhood educators found MCP to be an effective instructional model to use in their classrooms. I identified three themes: …
Relationships Of Secondary Traumatic Stress, Compassion Fatigue, And Compassion Satisfaction Among Maternity Nurses Caring For Patients Who Succumbed To Maternal Mortality, Debra Joy Mendelson
Relationships Of Secondary Traumatic Stress, Compassion Fatigue, And Compassion Satisfaction Among Maternity Nurses Caring For Patients Who Succumbed To Maternal Mortality, Debra Joy Mendelson
Theses & Dissertations
Background:
Maternity nurses work where positive outcomes are the norm, leaving them more vulnerable to the adverse effects of dealing with death. Limited data indicate that caring for a maternity patient who dies may result in nurses developing secondary traumatic stress and associated compassion fatigue, which may affect their job performance. Research is warranted to promote a better understanding of nurses’ experiences, especially since the increase in maternal mortality has resulted in more nurses being exposed to maternal death.
Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to explore relationships between secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction of maternity …

Autoimmunities After Covid: An Interview With Cindy Patton, Cindy Patton, Travis Alexander, Nishant Shahani
Autoimmunities After Covid: An Interview With Cindy Patton, Cindy Patton, Travis Alexander, Nishant Shahani

Taken collectively, Patton’s scholarship and activism has laid the foundation for insights in the health humanities, particularly AIDS studies, that consider the inextricable connections between epidemiology and ideology. Patton’s theorizations of stigma and discrimination patterns, her deconstruction of “truth” discourses subtending science, her critical re-evaluations of axioms associated with risk, safe sex, community, and knowledge production have been crucial interventions in the understanding of health and illness as cultural and discursive scripts. Among Patton’s most enduring contributions has been her theorization of how “African AIDS” was invented and circulated—that is, the notion of geographically bifurcated HIV pandemics split by the …
Implementing A Donor Human Milk Protocol To Improve Exclusive Breastfeeding Rates, Theresa Davis
Implementing A Donor Human Milk Protocol To Improve Exclusive Breastfeeding Rates, Theresa Davis
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Exclusive breastfeeding is a metric that hospitals nationwide work to improve. It is recommended that newborns breastfeed exclusively for at least the first six months to one year. There are several long-term health benefits and impacts for the new mother-baby couplet. Although touted as the most natural way to feed your baby, it is not always easy. Prenatal breastfeeding intention and education are associated with increased rates of exclusivity and duration. The breastfeeding journey is a process unique to the couplet experiencing it. Worldwide, the rates of newborns who exclusively breastfeed are below the World Health Assembly’s 2030 target of …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Delirium, a debilitating mental illness, poses significant challenges to patients, families, and healthcare systems, particularly among individuals aged 65 and older. This Quality Improvement (QI) project aims to introduce a best practice multicomponent delirium prevention bundle in a step-down Intensive Care Unit (ICU) floor to enhance knowledge, identification, and delirium prevention. Employing Orlando's Theory of the Deliberative Nursing Process, along with multiple Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles over 12 weeks, this project conducted staff education sessions to establish a baseline understanding of delirium identification, risk factors, screening tools, and implementation steps for the prevention bundle. The intervention occurred in a 16-bed step-down …

Balancing Abortion, Ball, Carlos A.
Balancing Abortion, Ball, Carlos A.
Santa Clara Law Review
Critics of Roe v. Wade and its progeny repeatedly contended that, in recognizing a fundamental right to choose an abortion, the Supreme Court ignored or significantly undervalued the states’ interests in regulating abortions. This Article’s examina- tion of the Court’s abortion jurisprudence during the Roe era, however, shows how it called for a meaningful balancing of the interests of both sides in ways that led the justices to uphold roughly as many abortion laws as they struck down between 1973 and 2020. In exploring the crucial role that the balancing of the interests of both the state and pregnant individuals …
No Orthopathy Without Orthoaesthesis: On The Necessity Of Negative Effort, Ryan G. Duns
No Orthopathy Without Orthoaesthesis: On The Necessity Of Negative Effort, Ryan G. Duns
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Theologians have become increasingly attentive to the role emotion and experience must play in theological reflection. Several thinkers have recently done so by appropriating and developing Jon Sobrino’s understanding of orthopathy, or “right affect.” A close examination of these efforts, however, reveals inconsistencies in the way the category is understood and deployed. This article redresses these inconsistencies by complementing orthopathy with orthoaesthesis, or “right perception.” The article opens by considering various appeals to orthopathy before suggesting how William James’s theory of emotion might provide the category with clarifying content. The second stage engages Simone Weil and Iris Murdoch as practitioners …

Latent Profiles Of Child Coping And Perception Of Experience Processes To Predict Long-Term Symptoms Of Depression, Intrusive Grief, And Suicidality Outcomes In Parentally Bereaved Children, Rebecca Hoppe
Theses and Dissertations
Childhood bereavement is a significant public health issue and the most distressing form of childhood trauma. The death of a parent can disrupt the course of a children's development and potentially predispose them to enduring adverse mental health outcomes, such as depression, intrusive grief, and suicidality. Recognizing grief as a dynamic process, theories have suggested that children’s unique coping and perceptions of experience can contribute to variations in individual adaptations to the death and the onset of mental health problems. The goals of this study were to (a) use latent profile analysis to empirically group recently bereaved children into distinct …

Designer fashion brands are well-known for their aggressive brand protection techniques and unwavering commitment to protecting the exclusivity of their products. After all, it is this exclusivity that drives demand for luxury products in the first place. Additionally, a new trend of duplicate or “dupe” products that are more accessible, noncounterfeited replicas of high-end goods presents a new problem for these luxury brands. Despite high-end brands’ best efforts, the luxury goods industry is still plagued by counterfeiting and piracy issues, as well as the emerging threat of replicated dupe products that drive luxury sales down. From notorious counterfeit marketplaces like …

The Realization Rule As A Legal Standard, Sloan G. Speck
The Realization Rule As A Legal Standard, Sloan G. Speck
Publications
The realization “rule” in tax law is better characterized as a legal standard. This characterization matters after the Supreme Court’s decision in Moore v. United States, which sets the stage for future courts to decide that the Constitution mandates realization— an identifiable event before accrued income is reportable by taxpayers. The stakes of a constitutional realization requirement are underappreciated. Because current statutory law embeds realization as a background principle, a constitutional realization requirement would operate as a taxpayer-initiated antiabuse doctrine—a sword that taxpayers could use selectively to invalidate parts of the Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations. This novel constitutional …

Ever since the rise of the great corporations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, commenters have debated whether firms should be run solely to benefit investors, or whether instead they should be run to benefit society as a whole. Both sides have claimed their preferred policies are necessary to maintain a capitalist system of private enterprise distinct from state institutions. What we can learn from the current iteration of the debate— now rebranded as "environmental, social, governance" or "ESG" investing— is that efforts to disentangle corporate governance from the regulatory state are futile; governmental regulation has an inevitable …

“A View Into The Ccu” – Investigating Visual Analysis And Machine Learning Approaches To Aid Clinicians In Critical Care Units, Christopher Haynes
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Despite the vast quantities of data stored by critical care units, there is a resistance to applying this to technological innovation. This is limiting the potential to enable the best clinical decision making and increasing time pressures on clinical staff. This thesis examines the current state of data use in two critical care units at University Hospitals Plymouth. Through discussions with clinical staff, the main limitations of their current digital work environment are considered to develop a three-element system. A thorough literature review is then carried out into critical care practices, visualisation principles for multi-variate heterogeneous data, and supervised machine …
